TRAVERSE CITY

I had a very aggressive travel schedule on Wednesday. I left Chicago at 5:30AM Central Time in order to be at an appointment in Holland (Michigan) at 10:00AM Eastern Time. Once I finished my first appointment, I scooted up to Traverse City in order to see a manufacturing customer that was considering some of my buttons for bracelet kits to be introduced at a major international tradeshow in January. My appointment on Thursday morning is much closer to home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I drove back to Grand Rapids in order to be close to my Thursday morning appointment. Before I made that drive, I squeezed in a two hour hike in Traverse City right before sundown. When something is a priority, one can (often) manage to find the time.

My hike was mostly along the southern rim of the western arm of Grand Traverse Bay (which is part of Lake Michigan)  The hike also had me 'traverse' (no pun intended) the main street of the town as well. This town is busting out at the seams during the summer months. I suppose if one wants to have a Traverse City beach to themselves as I did yesterday, the best time to accomplish that is the early days of fall, close to dusk.

This tree was on its own 'island' about 5 feet in diameter, about 5 feet from the shore.

The weather was a cool 67°F and I wore a long sleeve shirt and shorts.  In the midwest, the shorts and short sleeve shirt season may soon be winding down.

The water was very choppy in Grand Traverse Bay

It is usually not easy to have a whole beach to oneself in Traverse City.

A  small portion of my Traverse City urban hike was on the TART. (Traverse Area Recreational Trail)  Had I had more time I would have more carefully planned a hike that would have mostly stayed on the trail - instead, I found myself walking through downtown Traverse City as well as the shoreline. I have no complaints, I was very glad to be able to squeeze in a ten mile hike on Wednesday.

NEW BUFFALO, MICHIGAN

After my appointment in Royal Oak, Michigan (Detroit suburb) it was time to return home. My original intent was to get home and spend about two hours on the elliptical machine.  Around 5:30PM, still approximately 90 minutes from home, I pulled off the highway and into a beach town called New Buffalo, which is not more than 10 miles from the Indiana border. I parked my car in the town and walked to the beach, and then I walked approximately 3.5 miles on the beach until I finally found a public exit and walked back to where I started from.  My hike did not end until I had logged 10 miles. It is so much fun to have a hobby (hiking) which can be accomplished anywhere and at any time.

.
I didn't have to wait long to find out if these tracks were active...
.
...less than 30 seconds after taking the first picture,  a passenger train came roaring down the tracks.
.
It was not quite as hot as its been all week, although the humidity was a bit higher.
.
I  do not travel at my usual speed on the beach, even though I trekked on the most stable sand at the waters edge.

SATURDAY IS WEIGHDAY.
This morning, the imaginary needle on my digital scale, stopped at 229 lbs. This week I lost an additional 0.6 lbs. It is not a dramatic change, but the direction is good. Since I ballooned up to 242 lbs during my recovery from my hernia, I have lost 13 lbs in two months. Since this is not a race, but rather a long marathon with no finish line... I have every reason to be satisfied with my progress. I am.
