CHARTS

This is a chart of my weight since I started recording it on December 24, 2014. My starting weight was 309 lbs and I currently weight 239.3 lbs. That would be good, if the chart wasn't interrupted by periods when I was gaining weight.
If I only focus on my chart oner just the past two months, It looks like I have been right on target once I became serious (again) on August 26.



My goal now is to keep doing what I am doing and get back to the neighborhood of 225 lbs. It's a nice neighborhood. And these days, I am only about 15 pounds away from getting there.

WILDLIFE

Among the reasons that walking about town, or taking a real hike in a park is far more interesting than mindlessly walking on a treadmill as I used to do, is that outdoors one can see real wildlife. During my hikes I have seen frogs, snakes, deer, herons, chipmunks, turtles and wild turkeys. Yesterday as I hiked through Goose Island I spotted something that appeared to be moving. At first I thought it might be a leaf, but upon closer inspection, it turned out to be something that I would have never expected to see on a Chicago street. I think it was a scorpion. It was about 3 inches long, and when I got near it to take its photo, it curled up in a defensive position. I sent this picture to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to see if they would be kind enough to confirm my sighting. If I hear back from them, I will let you know... If it wasn't a scorpion, then perhaps it was a three inch lobster, and that seems highly unlikely. But seriously, a scorpion? In Chicago? Walking across the street? 






It took a lot of effort to squeeze in this 6 mile urban hike yesterday.... It rained practically the entire day. In fact, there were thunderstorms in the morning, afternoon and evening. When I set out on this hike, with my daughter, the rain had stopped briefly. This break in the precipitation was short-lived, so we got a bit wet.

GLACIAL PARK

A visit to Elm Grove, Wisconsin (Milwaukee suburb) to sell buttons and trims granted me the opportunity to take an 8 mile hike in GLACIAL PARK in northern Illinois which was on the way home with just a slight 20 mile detour.  This park has some of the biggest hills that I have ever seen in the northern part of Illinois. They ain't exactly the Rocky Mountains, but in a state known exclusively for crooked politicians, high taxes and extreme flatness, these hills were a shocking sight. My fitbit recorded that I had 'climbed' 40 'stories' during my hiking.

Glacial Park is McHenry County Conservation District’s most treasured open space holding, characterized by its rolling prairie, delta kames, oak savanna and the tranquil presence of the meandering Nippersink Creek.
Encompassing over 3,400 acres, Glacial Park contains over 400 acres of dedicated nature preserve; harbors 40 state endangered and threatened plant and animal species; is listed as one of the top five areas to view migratory wetland birds in the region, and is a part of the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge.
Glacial Park is the Conservation District’s most popular site, visited annually by more than 64,000 guests who hike or horseback along eight miles of trails; fish the shoreline of Nippersink Creek at Keystone Landing or Pioneer Road Landing…or bike a five-mile portion of the 26-mile Prairie Trail that skirts the eastern boundary of the park. In a place where wildlife viewing is plentiful, many spend time birding, picnicking or paddling the glistening waters of Nippersink Creek., a high-quality stream teeming with aquatic life — a place where numerous wetland waders and local wildlife also visit the water’s edge.

SATURDAY WEIGH IN

I am Jewish.
But today, for me, it is Christmas Eve 2016.
I weighed myself this morning, and I am currently:

239.3 lbs

The last time that I weighed 239.3 lbs, was nearly one year ago on Christmas Eve 2016.
At that time, this was an unwelcome weight at I had weighed about 6 pounds less one week earlier
THIS TIME, IT IS A WELCOME WEIGHT AS I WEIGHED 5.6 POUNDS MORE LAST WEEK.
With weight management, it's not not only what you weigh, it's what you weighed last week.

Today marks the first time in the year 2017 that I have been below 240 lbs.
Coincidentally, my blog started on December 24, 2014 - On that day I weight 309 lbs.
From that point, I am currently down 70 lbs.

More recently, just one week after the sun was eclipsed by the moon, this past summer on August 28 my weight was a screamingly depressing 263.3 lbs, and rising weekly.

IN THE PAST SEVEN WEEKS, I HAVE REDISCOVERED THE SECRETS THAT I HAD PREVIOUSLY LEARNED FOR SUCCESSFUL WEIGHT LOSS. (eat less, exercise more)

And in the past seven weeks, I have lost TWENTY FOUR POUNDS.

NO WONDER, I HAVE BEEN RECENTLY EXPERIENCING AN EXTRA SPRING IN MY STEP!

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Yesterday my alarm started blaring at 5:00AM. by 6:00AM, I was on the road on the way to Goshen, Indiana. I returned in the late afternoon, with enough time to walk over to the local stadium where my daughter's high school team was playing football. My daughter is a cheerleader. So, for us in Chicago, it was 'Thursday Night Lights.' The infection in the NFL of players disrespecting the National Anthem and the American Flag, as has been well documented, has spread to high schools all across the United States. My daughter's school is not immune. Four morons on the football team took a knee, and scores of students couldn't be bothered to stand for the National Anthem. Apparently, the coach of the Cheerleading squad informed the girls that that behavior was not to be tolerated. Finally, someone in charge of kids, shows some leadership skills and exerts their authority as they should. Yeah, Thursday Night Lights ain't what it used to be in America. It is maddening and it is sad. 


Speaking of sports... How about those New York Yankees? They were down two games to none in a best of five series against the Cleveland Indians. They won three games in a row, and they have progressed to the American League Championship Series. Way to go, Yankees!

LARGE WALKING FIGURE

I am a walking figure.
Even though I weigh in the neighborhood of 240 or so pounds (down nearly 70 pounds when I started on December 24, 2014) I am still large.
So, technically, I guess one can say that I am a large walking figure.
Yesterday during an urban hike along the lakefront, I discovered the real LARGE WALKING FIGURE.





Long before I 'discovered' the 15.6' LARGE WALKING FIGURE, the lake was experiencing some uncommon waves crashing into the beach as the winds were blowing towards shore.

SPELUNKER

It might be a bit of a reach for me to call myself a spelunker, as the cave that I explored yesterday during a hike at Perry Farm Park after my appointment in Bourbonnais, Illinois was only about 20 feet deep, but is's the only cave that I know of within many miles of Chicago, so for me, this is spelunking.

I hiked Perry Farm Park once before and saw this same cave. For yesterday's visit I was prepared with my flashlight and walking stick.  With the illumination from my flashlight I was able to take a proper selfie by balancing the phone on a ledge and using the automatic timer.

SPELUNKER: one who makes a hobby of exploring, studying caves
Spelunker sounds like the noise a pebble makes when you drop it down a deep hole and into dark, hidden water far below. But there's nothing dark or obscure about the etymology of the term. We borrowed "spelunker" from Latin spelunca, which in turn derives from Greek spelynx. When you get to the bottom of things, you find that both the Latin and Greek words mean "cave." Although "spelunker" might sound neat, be careful: some cave-exploring enthusiasts prefer the term "caver."
