When I am not blogging, I am gaining weight.
Publicly logging my meals keeps my caloric intake within normal human levels.
When I am not blogging, I eat with reckless abandon.
Is this stupid?
Obviously.
What is the answer?
Keep Blogging.

During my hiatus... I did take three notable hikes in December 2018 and one hike in April which I saved to my phone, but now want to post here... so I can delete them from my phone.

I also achieved a notable milestone on fitbit, which has thus far not been memorialized on my blog...

HEMPSTEAD LAKE STATE PARK

For the third consecutive day during my trip to visit my Mom in Lynbrook, I set out early to take a suburban hike. On Friday I decided to trek out to Hempstead Lake State Park. I have no recall of going to this park ever before. It is only about three miles away from the home I grew up in. I went to the park, and exited into Rockville Centre before returning home. This was an 8 mile hike. This completed my hiking schedule for my Lynbrook visit. I did walk only three days, Wednesday 17 miles, Thursday 6 miles and Friday 8 miles. I was satisfied with my level of exercise during the week. The warmest temperature that I experienced on any of these three hikes was 20°F.  The weather was cooperative with me, the temperatures in Chicago this week had been much colder. However the temperatures in Chicago when I return today are soon to be dipping even further into minus territory.  I don't foresee any long hikes in that kind of environment - but I am sure I will get out at least for a short excursion. I guess I will find out this week.

Normally on Saturday I weigh myself. I will wait until tomorrow when I am home on my own scale. Since I don't trust that all scales are calibrated the same, the only way to know if one has gained or lost any weight is to use the same scale.

VALLEY STREAM SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

I am still in Lynbrook visiting my Mom. After Wednesday's 'epic' hike to Long Beach it was time to stay a bit closer to home for Thursday's hike. The balmy weather of Wednesday had dissipated and dropped another six degrees to 14°F when I set out. I decided to start my hike by walking to my old high school which I graduated from a bit more than 42 years ago - Valley Stream South. I was curious just how long that walk was. Back in the old days, my home was the furthest away from the high school of any home in the district. I am sure that it still the case. Anyway, I logged my hike and 'discovered' that it was merely 2.2 miles door-to-door.

This was the route I took when I walked (or rode my bike) to my high school. I was convinced that I lived 2.5 miles from my school, it turned out to be a little bit less.

.
I thought that this street sign in Millbrook (formerly Green Acres) had a snappy name.

LONG BEACH

In the spirit of Homer Simpson, it has been my 'lifelong dream' for the past two years to walk to Long Beach from my Mom's house in Lynbrook where I grew up. My Mom still lives in the house that I grew up in and I got it into my head that it would be a interesting to walk to the beach sometime during a visit. During my last visit to Lynbrook, a family crisis interfered with my plans.  When my Mom shattered her ankle in three places during my last visit, my enthusiasm for taking such a walk and the opportunity to do so disappeared. Fast forward, fourteen months, and my Mom is back on her feet and while the ankle is not 100%, it still qualifies as a wonderful miracle that she can walk again, and while my Mom humorously says the ankle is not painful, but gives her discomfort. Me? I consider pain and discomfort to be synonyms - but I digress.

I woke up early on Wednesday morning in the same bed that I used to wake up in when I was going to high school nearly, but not quite 50 years ago.  I made myself two bowls of instant oatmeal and set out for my suburban hike. I bundled up quite well, and checked the temperature. The temperature when I set out was 20°F. I was able to easily convince myself that it was not so cold, because back at my home in Chicago at the very same moment, it was -1°F.

The trek to the beach, the the Atlantic Ocean was just 6.5 miles and it took just over an hour and a half. Had I just turned around and returned the way I came, I would have taken a 13 mile trek. I did not do that. I continued west along the boardwalk which was recently re-built after 'Super Storm Sandy' five years ago to the very end, and then I continued on the main road to the Atlantic Beach Bridge. I don't think that I crossed this bridge even a dozen times in my entire life growing up. In fact, I wasn't sure that I could cross it as a pedestrian until I googled it during my hike and confirmed that it did have a pedestrian sidewalk. Using my MapMyWalk App, I saw that the way back to Lynbrook was very uncomplicated. I made a right turn shortly after crossing this bridge and walked a few miles on Broadway right back to my neighborhood. I made a short detour to walk past the elementary school that I started attending as a kindergartner likely in 1962.

My hike was 17 miles. I came home, had some lunch with my Mom and then I had to go back outside to do my chores. My Mom had asked me to clear some leaves in her front yard and yesterday seemed like a good day to do that.

HARD FOR ME NOT TO WALK

Yesterday was the last day of a five day visit to New York to visit my Mom. On the second day of this visit my Mom tripped and fractured her ankle in three places while we were in Connecticut. (I have suggested to her that she embellish her story and claim that it was a parachute jump accident - something to do with the chute not deploying properly.  Surely this is a more interesting story than tripping on a hemp rug, but this is her decision what she wants to tell people.) After a late night trip to the the Emergency Room in Sharon, Connecticut.  She spent one final night at the home of my youngest brother. On Sunday, we managed to drive home to Long Island with my Mom stretched out in the back seat. We needed the Police to help get her in her home after getting out of the car as they were able to lift the wheelchair to get past the front steps to the front door. She cannot put any weight on her left foot. Since I was with her in New York, within three days, we were able to get her chairlift fixed, purchase a shower chair, get a temporary ramp in the backyard installed, visit a surgeon (although not the surgeon who will perform the surgery) who was able to cut down the original splint so my Mom could at least bend her knee. This surgeon that we did meet was a specialist in shoulders. He was a very young guy and just to add some levity to this visit, we discovered that this day that we met him was his very first day at this particular practice - although not his first day as a doctor.  Still, it was a productive visit as he ordered a cat scan, which we managed to get done at another nearby location. Although nothing is 'nearby' when the struggle to get in and out of the car is so difficult. And finally, and most importantly, round-the-clock home health care workers were organized. I have met one of the three who will be rotating care, and this woman is simply the most wonderful person a person could imagine. We established a rapport and friendship within minutes of her arrival. It turns out that she is a marathon runner. In fact, that is incorrect. She is an ultra-marathon runner. I don't find myself wondering if this woman will have the stamina to take care of my Mom. That apparently is not an issue.  Every step that my Mom takes with her walker is painstakingly difficult and it will be a while before she is walking.

This only serves to remind me how lucky I am. Each and every day I am bopping around counting steps that often exceed 20,000 per day. I often try to walk 10 miles per day.  Yesterday, since it was my last day with my Mom during this trip, I thought it best not to go out for a walk. Even so, when my flight arrived at around 10:00PM in Midway Airport in Chicago, I did hop onto the subway. I departed the train about three miles from home and walked the rest of the way home. When one's hobby is walking, it is 'easy' to find a way to walk no matter what the circumstances of one's day. For me, it is hard for me not to walk. This is in stark contrast to the situation my Mom is in.

I was curious how my MapMyWalk app would record the takeoff of my flight from LaGuardia Airport. So I activated the app just as the plane started roaring down the runway... It was interesting for me to see the path the plane took to turn itself around and start heading west to Chicago.

CHANGE AT JAMAICA

When I lived in Long Island, I often took the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) from the city (Manhattan) back home to Lynbrook.  One would board a train in Penn Station, underneath the world famous Madison Square Garden, and the train would head east.  Shortly after the train departed, a voice over the loudspeaker would announce its destination, for example Babylon, and for all other destinations one would have to 'change at Jamaica (Jamaica, Queens).

Jamaica Station, Queens, New York (Long Island Railroad)

I have personally been on my own tracks since last December, 24th, 2014. I have reached my 'Jamaica' and it is time to change tracks.  Early this year, my interim destination was to lose something in the neighborhood of 100 pounds. I have arrived at this point.  In recent weeks, I have found it personally interesting to revisit some of my earlier posts on this blog.  This was my post from last January that was very dryly titled INTERIM & LONG TERM GOALS.
The long term goal is simple.  Look healthy and be healthy.   My goal is to lose a lot of weight that I don't need to be carting around.   So far, I have 'only' lost 15 lbs.  My father had an excellent way of explaining just how much that really is.  He suggested going to the grocery store and picking up a piece of meat that weighed 15 lbs.   Carry that around all day, or all week - and then you can answer the question whether 15 lbs is a big deal or not.  I am convinced that my initial success has been dramatic and meaningful.   I think my knee does not hurt any more when I wake up in the morning - Is that real? Is it my imagination?  My goal is to lose something in the neighborhood of 100 lbs from my position at the starting line on December 24, 2014.  In order to lose 100 lbs, I will have to lose one pound at a time.  One interim goal would be the ability to shop at COSTCO.   This store, and most retail stores don't stock trousers or blue jeans for those with a 50 inch waist.   Costco 'only' caters to those 'svelte' individuals with a 44" waistline.  Even that goal might be nearly forty pounds away.   I will have to get to 44" before I get to 40" or 38."  I recently stumbled upon a decade old article on WebMD that explored the seemingly preposterous idea that health secrets could be divined from the members of the Rolling Stones. This article claimed that Mick Jagger has a 28" waist.   That is not my goal.
I will assume that it is not quite as fascinating for you, my readers, to re-read these old posts from the past.  I promise you, for me, it is amazingly fascinating.  This post, duplicated above reminds me where I was one year ago.  After initially losing 15 pounds, I was still only dreaming about having the opportunity someday to shop at Costco.  I no longer 'dream' of shopping at Costco. In fact, now that I actually can shop at Costco, I do not.  I prefer to find nice clothing with a bit more flair.  I find it much more fun to shop at a place like Banana Republic.  The real point is, these days, I can shop anywhere. One year ago,  I could shop nowhere.

MOVING FORWARD

As the new year approaches, now only 18 days away, I will try to change my mindset.  I will need to mentally, 'change at Jamaica.'  I need to hop aboard a new train.  I need a new destination.  I need new goals.

GOALS

1. DO NOT TRAVEL BACKWARDS.  Is it inevitable that a person can tack on 5 lbs, 7 lbs?  Likely, it is.  When that happens.  I need to quickly apply the brakes and reverse course.

2. 200 lbs. The next logical stop on my journey is to join my fellow citizens who weigh 200 lbs, not 200+ lbs.

3. 190+ lbs. When I arrive at 200 lbs, I will be eager for the next stop which is the world of 190+ lbs.

4. Know when to quit.  I do not aspire to look like Mick Jagger, I am too tall anyway.  And way too young!

5. Continue exercising.  This is hardly a goal anymore, as its importance has become part of who I am.  Now that I have 'recently' discovered walking as exercise, it is re-assuring that I have an effective exercise that I will be able to do for the rest of my life.  I may have to adjust my speed, but the option of walking will always be there waiting for me.
.

After driving my wife and daughter  to the Eckhart Park Pool for  a swim meet, I drove the car back to the Honda Dealership for a scheduled oil change. After dropping off my car,  I walked back to Eckart Park to watch my daughter swim.  In order to make this a 3 mile walk, I had to walk a bit in the field before I entered the pool. After the swim meet, I had to walk back to the Honda Dealership.  I found a different way to walk.  The goal was to make create two three mile walks - I was successful
