When I am not blogging, I am gaining weight.
Publicly logging my meals keeps my caloric intake within normal human levels.
When I am not blogging, I eat with reckless abandon.
Is this stupid?
Obviously.
What is the answer?
Keep Blogging.

During my hiatus... I did take three notable hikes in December 2018 and one hike in April which I saved to my phone, but now want to post here... so I can delete them from my phone.

I also achieved a notable milestone on fitbit, which has thus far not been memorialized on my blog...

ST. JOSEPH RIVER ELKHART DAY 45

Arrived in Elkhart for the second time in as many weeks with about one hour of sunlight left in the day. Immediately changed into some walking clothes and left my hotel. It appeared that I could reach the St Joseph River in downtown Elkhart, so I basically headed that way, crossed a couple of bridges to turn around and when I was done, I had logged a six mile hike.

Meanwhile.... Day 46 of calorie consumption in the neighborhood of 1000 was successful.

RUM VILLAGE PARK

Summer may be over. Perhaps not officially, but most folks associate the passing of the Labor Day Weekend with the end of summer. Hiking season is definitely not over. After spending a day in South Bend, Indiana visiting customers, there was still some time at the end of the day before sunset which allowed for a quick three mile hike in Rum Village Park.

This hike gave me the opportunity to utilize my latest purchase: my new walking stick. During our trip up to Wisconsin for the state fair over this past weekend, we stopped at a yard sale and picked up two beautifully carved walking sticks. ($7.50 each) This stick would have come in very handy last summer when I was stepping in an ankle deep natural pool at the base of a waterfall, until my next step brought me up to my waist, which wasted my cellphone. There was no hidden surprises during my three mile hike, but I still enjoyed my new walking stick.

WELCOME TO ELKHART

Yesterday I planted myself in Elkhart, Indiana which was centrally located between my two business appointments, one in Middlebury and the other in South Bend. The temperature during the day was close to 90 degrees and by the time that I set off on my urban hike at 6:05PM it had cooled to 86 degrees. As much as I enjoy my indoor sessions on the elliptical and treadmill as it gives me the opportunity to while the time away watching netflix, it is much more rewarding to be outdoors.  The MapMyWalk application on the phone is great as it calculates the distance, the route and the calorie burn.  Its best feature is that one cannot get lost as long as the phone is in contact with a cellular network. This is very handy feature when one is walking in strange neighborhoods.

You might wonder: How do I find time in the day to walk two hours?  I have basically removed TV from my life. I can remember a couple of years ago, I would settle into my hotel room and watch 4 or 5 hours of TV each night.  Watching that much TV is a kind of existence which I knew too well. It is a complete waste of time. Now if one is on a treadmill or elliptical machine and watching TV or netflix instead of lying on the couch eating potato chips while video watching - That is a different story.  It may still be somewhat of a waste of time, but it is not a COMPLETE waste of time.

After logging over 50,000 steps on Sunday, 20,000 steps may seem like a mere pittance.  It is not.
