HARBOR DAY

I enjoy that my hikes often have a theme. Yesterday was Harbor Day (not to be confused with Arbor Day which is some little known holiday which I believe has something to do with trees.) I set out yesterday to erase the lethargy that I was experiencing on Saturday when I couldn't (or didn't) mobilize myself to take a walk of any distance or even spend any time on the elliptical machine. On Saturday I did absolutely nothing in the calorie burn department. I even failed to reach 10,000 steps for the day, and for me that is the minimum daily 'requirement'. On Sunday, I bounced back. Big time.  When I awoke early Sunday forecast was for rain, likely until the early afternoon. By 9:00AM, I guess the winds had pushed the rain clouds away from Chicago and the forecast removed the threat of precipitation. That was my signal to get outdoors. I was wearing my brand-new size 14 Merrell Moab Hiking Shoes and I had planned to take a hike of ten to fifteen miles. When I was done, I had hiked 30 miles. Some people just don't know when to stop. (Listen, in general, if I knew when to stop, I never would have ballooned up to 309 pounds by December 24, 2014!)

This was the approach to Montrose Harbor, although I didn't climb over these rocks, there was a trail.

I left the house with the idea of heading north along the lakefront and hiking around every nook and cranny of the harbors that line the shoreline from here to Evanston, Illinois (first suburb one encounters walking northwards along the lake)

MONTROSE HARBOR
BELMONT HARBOR
DIVERSEY HARBOR

My hike continued along the lakeshore and I hiked through Loyola University, and all the way to Northwestern University in Evanston.

It's not everyday that a person sets out from downtown Chicago and walks to Evanston.
This outdoor conical sculpture spent some time in Navy Pier years ago.  It's been at the same location in Evanston for nearly a decade.

SOMEWHAT AMUSING STORY....

I finally headed south towards home after a quick stop at the Evanston Whole Foods for a light lunch of spicy tuna avocado roll (sushi) and a couple of snacks.  Those two snacks which were in two flimsy clear plastic bags almost cost me about $79.00 (plus tax.)  I will explain. After leaving the Whole Foods I munched on my two snacks, dried mango and dark chocolate ginger and I emptied my right pocket and threw out the clear plastic bags that they came in about 5 blocks south of the Whole Foods. Unfortunately, I did not realize at the time that I also threw out my fitbit which was also in my pocket.  I was about two miles south of the Whole Foods when I glanced at my iphone to check my progress on the fitbit which communicates via Bluetooth.  I noticed that the fitbit had not updated in about 30 minutes or so. That was when I realized that somehow I had lost it - somewhere.  I turned around and retraced my steps. I remembered that I had thrown away those two cheap plastic bags and two empty bottles all the way back in Evanston.  So I quickly made my way back north.  When I got to one of the garbage pails that I thought I might have used, my fitbit application on my iphone updated. I shook the garbage pail and with each shake, the fitbit recorded a step. I was a regular Sherlock Holmes and deduced that my fitbit was indeed in this public garbage pail. So I did what anyone would do, I emptied the pail on the sidewalk.
That little black speck in the lower right of this pile of garbage is my $79 fitbit.
I retrieved my fitbit, I picked up the garbage and returned it to the receptacle, quickly walked across the street to a Trader Joe's to wash my fitbit and my hands, and happily continued on my way. Once my hike hit 30 miles, I finally figured out that I had had enough and took the subway home.

from wikipedia...

Arbor Day (or Arbour; from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Today, many countries observe such a holiday. Though usually observed in the spring, the date varies, depending on climate and suitable planting season.

The City on the Edge of Forever

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...
"The City on the Edge of Forever" is the 28th episode of the American science fiction television series Star Trek, and the penultimate episode of the first season. It was first broadcast in the United States on NBC on April 6, 1967. Set in the 23rd century, the series follows the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew aboard the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise. In this episode, after Doctor Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) travels back in time and changes history, Kirk and Spock(Leonard Nimoy) follow him to correct the timeline. In doing so, Kirk falls in love with Edith Keeler (Joan Collins), but realizes that in order to save his future, he must allow her to die.
PLOT
Chief Medical Officer Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) is treating an injured Lt. Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) when the Enterprise is rocked by a distortion and McCoy accidentally injects himself with an overdose of cordrazine. Delusional, he flees from the bridge to the transporter room, beaming himself down to a nearby planet. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) leads a landing party to look for McCoy, and they come across an ancient glowing stone ring, which is causing time distortions. The "Guardian of Forever" (voiced by Bartell LaRue) explains that it is a doorway to any time and place. While Spock (Leonard Nimoy) is recording historic images from the portal, McCoy escapes through it, into the past. The landing party suddenly loses contact with the Enterprise and is informed by the Guardian that the past has been altered. The ship—along with the entire Federation—no longer exists.
The Guardian permits Kirk and Spock to follow McCoy in an effort to repair the timeline. They arrive in New York City during the 1930s' Great Depression. After stealing some clothes in order to blend in, they meet a woman named Edith Keeler (Joan Collins), who runs the 21st Street Mission. Spock begins to construct a processor to interface with his tricorder to find out how McCoy altered history. He discovers that they arrived at some point shortly before McCoy's arrival. While they await his arrival, they work for Keeler and Kirk begins to fall in love with her. After some time, unbeknownst to Kirk, McCoy stumbles into the mission, delirious, and Keeler takes him in. Spock finishes his work reviewing the Guardian's images of the original and altered timelines and discovers Keeler was supposed to have died in an accident, which was prevented by McCoy. Instead, Keeler started a pacifist movement, causing the United States to delay its entrance into World War II, allowing Nazi Germany enough time to develop a nuclear weapon and win the war. Kirk knows that Keeler must be allowed to die in order to undo the damage to the timeline.
Keeler nurses McCoy back to health, and he tells her his story. Though Keeler is skeptical, she tells McCoy that he would like her eccentric new friend. Later, en route to see a movie, Keeler mentions McCoy to Kirk, who tells her to wait there before running to find Spock. The Starfleet trio reunite in front of the mission. As a curious Keeler crosses the street to join them, she steps in front of a fast-moving truck. Instinctively, Kirk reacts, but freezes when he remembers that Keeler must die. McCoy attempts to go to her aid, but is restrained by Kirk as Keeler is struck and killed. McCoy tells Kirk that he could have saved her. With Keeler's death, history returns to its original form. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy return to the Guardian's planet where, as far as the rest of the landing party are concerned, the three have only been away for a few minutes. The Guardian confirms that the timeline has been restored. The crew on the Enterprise contacts the landing party and the traumatized Kirk responds with the instructions, "Let's get the hell out of here."

OUT OF GAS

I don't know why, but I simply could not gather up the energy yesterday for a long hike, a moderate  walk or even a short amble. I considered spending some time on the elliptical machine, but I didn't feel up to that either. Apparently, I had just run out of gas.

So although, yesterday was a day without any particular physical exertion, I did get myself to REI with my wife and shopped for a new pair of hiking shoes. A pair of hiking shoes which was on clearance caught my eye, and miraculously they had them in a size 13 and size 14. It turns out that this pair of hiking shoes is the same style as the hiking shoes that I have been wearing: Merrell Moab.
My previous pair was not waterproof and they were a size 13. I always thought that they were a bit too snug. Last year, during a spell when I was urban hiking 10 miles per day, I lost a toenail from wearing those shoes.  (It grew back)  At the store last evening, I tried on a size 13 and size 14.  I settled on the size 14 shoes. They felt amazingly comfortable. Unlike my current worn out pair - this pair is waterproof.  I am sure that I will take them out for spin later today. I am well-rested, with new shoes, and raring to go. So, if I can confirm that forecasted rain will not be be happening, I will shortly be headed outdoors.

* * * * * *

I asked the salesman at the REI store if the fact that these Merrell Moab's were on clearance meant that they were being discontinued. He affirmed that that was the case. He told me that next spring Merrell Moab 2.0 will make their debut.  2.0?  Really? I wonder if they will be bluetooth enabled...

DAY OFF FROM EXERCISING...

I feel particularly lousy about not even clearing 10,000 steps for the day.  If I hadn't fallen asleep on the couch, I surely would have stepped in place for a 15 minutes just to clear the 10,000 step hurdle.

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN'!

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN'.  This was a hit song from Nancy Sinatra.  Here are some details lifted from wikipedia:
These Boots Are Made for Walkin' is a pop song written by Lee Hazelwood and recorded by Nancy Sinatra.  It was released on February 22, 1966, and hit No. 1 in the United States Billboard HOT 100 and in the UK Singles Chart.

As I shared with you a few weeks ago, I had purchased hiking boots while I was in Minnesota earlier this month.  I finally started to wear them only around my own home to make sure that I was happy with them and that they were snug, and comfortable.

MERRILL MOAB VENTILATOR

With my hiking boots (shoes) and my backpack - I really think that my major equipment purchases are done.  Now it is time to train.   The HALF DOME hike is only 4 months away.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I think that this was the week that I started getting SERIOUS about training for this hike.  It was this past week that I first tried, and succeeded in climbing up my 25 story building from ground to top floor.   Each time it took about 4.5 minutes.  In that this this the type of activity that I had previously NEVER done in my entire life - training has officially begun.

MERRELL MOAB VENTILATOR HIKING BOOTS

The upcoming hike to the summit of Half Dome in Yosemite scheduled for October 1st became a little more real today.  Our expedition includes six of us. Hotel rooms in Yosemite Park for the night before have been secured. Last week, I booked my airline tickets to the West Coast.  Last evening, I purchased hiking boots at Dick's Sporting Goods.

MERRELL MOAB VENTILATOR HIKING BOOTS

I picked a good state to make this purchase.  Minnesota has no sales tax on clothing.  I believe that I will have adequate time to train for this hike which is still five months away.  I am both excited and nervous.
