SISYPHUS

Sisyphus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In Greek mythology Sisyphus (/ˈsɪsfəs/; GreekΣίσυφοςSísuphos) was the king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). He was punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness and deceitfulness by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it come back to hit him, repeating this action for eternity. Through the classical influence on modern culture, tasks that are both laborious and futile are therefore described as Sisyphean (/ˌsɪsˈfən/).

Weight loss.  Down 10 pounds. Up 12 pounds. Down 4 pounds. Up 3 pounds. Down 1 pound. Up five pounds. It occurred to me just the other day that losing weight is sisyphean task.  This is not meant to be a negative statement. It is just accurate. Unlike Sisyphus, the task of losing weight and maintaining weight is not a punishment. In fact, for people who need to lose weight, NOT BEING ON THE METAPHORICAL HILL WITH A ROCK TO ROLL is the punishment. As said in the 2004 movie, DODGEBALL, by White Goodman  'So now you're a philosophizer?'  I guess today I am.

My point is this. I would rather be trying to roll the metaphorical rock up the hill trying to reach a destination that can and never will be reached than simply sitting around doing nothing and getting more and more out of shape and fatter as was my previous condition prior to December 2014. It is better to be Sisyphus than to not be engaged at all.

MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER

There was a time last year, when I was losing almost one pound per day by limiting myself to 1000  calories per day, that I thought that I might have a new career. It seemed at the time, that I could help anyone and everyone lose weight. I thought I could be a motivational speaker. I thought I would give lectures and inspire people. There was a small 'window of opportunity' when my desire and will-power where in complete sync. Weight loss seemed easy. I remember so well, thinking that if I could get down to a particular weight, it would be really easy to maintain as I would be able to eat so much more. The eating so much more part, I have mastered. I need to retrain myself to eat a little bit less. I have been very hard on myself lately. I probably should not be quite so negative. Even yesterday, when my scale pointed to 221 lbs, it's not as if I have completely lost control. I am still down 88 lbs from where I started. So, today, I am going to try to concentrate on the positive. And right now, I am going to go to the YMCA for your basic 2 hour workout on an elliptical machine. As I have learned, exercise does not really contribute that much to weight loss, but it does make me feel better after I have done it.  That is reason enough to continue. I simply do not enjoy admitting that there is a part of me that sympathizes with Matt Foley.

Matt Foley is a fictional character from the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live performed by Chris Farley. Foley is a motivational speaker who exhibits characteristics that someone in that position would not typically have: whereas motivational speakers are typically successful and charismatic, Foley is abrasive, clumsy, and down on his luck. The character was popular in its original run and went on to become one of Farley's best-known characters.

THE MOVIE THAT EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT

If you do not know what the movie is that everyone is talking about, then the premise of the title is false. Still, I think that you can figure out that I am talking about Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  As the months and years were approaching after this film was announced, I had little interest. Only about 48 hours prior to its Friday release, did I get bitten by the hype.  I read that that this movie was much like the original films from the late 70's early 80's. I read that the film had a mix of action, emotion and humor. Everything that I read turned out to be true. I went with my 13 year old daughter who had low expectations for this film. As I sat in my reserved seat, which completely reclined, with some snacks that were 'smuggled' in from the outside, I found myself transported to another time and place. The movie claims that the action takes place "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."  That is meant to be the location and timeline of the story. I found myself transported a long time ago, not quite in far away galaxy, but far enough from where I am now. I found myself transported into the 17 year-old who viewed that first movie nearly 40 years ago when I was living on Long Island. The movie surprised my daughter who also enjoyed it. The movie was both new, inventive and familiar all at once. This prediction is not too difficult to make: The movie will be financially successful. It deserves it.
