CAMPBELL'S MANHATTAN CLAM CHOWDER

My wife has discovered for me my new favorite soup: Campbell's Manhattan Clam Chowder.   One full can will taste great and it is only 150 calories.   Why didn't I discover this product earlier?  It appears that in the Chicago area, it is not widely available.   It is carried in a couple of stores - but one has to know where to look.

My 'old' favorite soup was New England Clam Chowder.  New England Clam Chowder is the creamy dairy based high calorie soup which is a poor choice for someone watching  calories.  Manhattan Clam Chowder is broth based and tastes delicious and it is low calorie.   Doesn't this can look like a work of art?

As you might know, I am asking that because 1960's artist, Andy Warhol, surely is famous for among other things, turning Campbell's Soup Cans into art.

Andy Warhol photographed in front of Campbell's Soup Cans

David Bowie released a song entitled Andy Warhol released in 1971.

"Andy Warhol" (by David Bowie)

Like to take a cement fix

Be a standing cinema

Dress my friends up
just for show
See them as they really are
Put a peephole in my brain
Two New Pence to have a go
I'd like to be a gallery
Put you all inside my show

Andy Warhol looks a scream
Hang him on my wall
Andy Warhol, Silver Screen
Can't tell them apart at all

Andy walking, Andy tired
Andy take a little snooze
Tie him up when he's fast asleep
Send him on a pleasant cruise
When he wakes up on the sea
Be sure to think of me and you
He'll think about paint
and he'll think about glue
What a jolly boring thing to do

from wikipedia:
"Andy Warhol" is a song written by David Bowie in 1971 for the album Hunky Dory. It is an acoustic song about one of Bowie's greatest inspirations, the American pop artist Andy Warhol. The song starts with some studio chat where Bowie explains to producer Ken Scott, who has just been heard to mispronounce Warhol's name when introducing the take, the right way to say it. Scott solemnly reintroduces the take with the correct pronunciation. There follows several seconds of silence before Bowie asks if the tape is rolling. Upon realising they are indeed recording, Bowie bursts into laughter and begins playing. The song is memorable for its distinctive, flamenco-sounding opening riff on the acoustic guitar that continues through the song.

some quotes from Andy Warhol
(I discovered while researching today's blog post - that Andy Warhol had genuine wisdom.)

“When people are ready to, they change. They never do it before then, and sometimes they die before they get around to it. You can't make them change if they don't want to, just like when they do want to, you can't stop them.”
― Andy WarholAndy Warhol in His Own Words

“Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, So what. That's one of my favorite things to say. So what.”
― Andy WarholThe Philosophy of Andy Warhol

“Art is what you can get away with.”
― Andy Warhol

“An artist is somebody who produces things that people don't need to have.”
― Andy WarholAndy Warhol, Thirty Are Better Than One

“I'm not afraid to die; I just don't want to be there when it happens”
― Andy Warhol

and finally....the most famous quote of all....the one that everybody kinda knows....

“In the future, everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes.”
― Andy Warhol

FITNESS TRACKING APPLICATION - MapMyWalk

MapMyWalk is an application that I downloaded onto my iPhone back in December and finally got around to using it yesterday.  This is the description of the application lifted from their own website:
MapMyWalk is a fitness tracking application that enables you to use the built-in GPS of your mobile device to track all of your fitness activities. Record your workout details, including duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and route traveled on an interactive map. You can even effortlessly save and upload your workout data to MapMyWalk where you can view your route workout data, and comprehensive workout history.
I was still visiting my Mom in Lynbrook, New York yesterday and the nearest YMCA was not very near.  I decided that a simple brisk walk would be my form of exercise for the day.  It was the first time since I started exercising that I experienced the great outdoors.  I was mentally prepared for a spring day in New York so I was a bit surprised that the temperature was 36 degrees for this little adventure.  I chose a path which mirrored the way I used to get to my high school (Valley Stream South High School.  I graduated from in 1975)   After I reached my high school I chose a different path to return to my Mom's home.   Although I don't have great faith in the calories burned reported by this app, which seem an unlikely high number - I am sure that I did burn calories as I was walking fast enough to raise my heart rate - although I don't know what my heart rate was - that's where an apple iWatch comes in handy - a product that I might consider later this month.

MapMyWalk calculated that the entire walk turned out to be 4.77 miles and that I made 9970 steps.  I averaged 12:22 minutes/mile which took 63 minutes.  The application 'thinks' I burned 1342 calories... I find that number ridiculously high.   In fact, for the entry I use in my absolute favorite app, MyFitnessPal, I will record only 1/3 of that number for calories burned which will be 447 calories.   It does not really matter what number I record... if more calories were indeed burned - so be it - no complaints here.

Dinner took place at a fabulous restaurant: FRED'S at BARNEY's (9th floor of the famous clothing store)  This was for the 80th birthday celebration of my Mom.   My youngest brother, had selected the restaurant with an eye for a place where I would be able to find something suitable to eat - as well as a cousin who he claimed can find nothing to eat 'nothing' anywhere.   I selected the Sushi grade Tuna and ordered it charred on the outside and and raw on the inside.  I substituted the couscous for an order of fresh asparagus.   As a result, I had a terrific dinner, which was extremely low calorie.

MULLIGATAWNY SOUP

In one of the most memorable episodes of SEINFELD, the cast has some conflict with the "Soup Nazi" who dispenses soup from his Manhattan Soup store but is very strict about how one orders and how one behaves while ordering his delicious soup.   One of the tastiest soups served up on this fictional TV show was the 'mulligatawny soup.'    Aside from this November 2, 1995 TV episode, I have never heard of mulligatawny soup before or since.   Yesterday, while shopping at Costco I saw some of this soup in the refrigerated section - and I simply had to buy some.   I added it to my dinner last night and it was delicious.   I had always half-thought that mulligatawny was a made up word!   (I guess you know now that I don't get out to Indian restaurants too often.)

Jerry Seinfeld and George Costanza are seen here
ordering soup from the feared 'Soup Nazi.' (I don't
think that there was a Costco in Manhattan back
in those days, or even now)

The soup that I purchased at Costco was Maya Kaimal Mulligatawny Soup.  "A zesty Indian style soup of tomatoes, rice, mushrooms and coconut cream."   The soup is further described on the packaging:

This famous soup has a rich and complicated past, like India itself.  Originally known as milagu tunni or "pepper water," during the reign of the British Raj this spicy broth was transformed into the thicker European-style soup we call Mulligatawny.  My vegetarian recipe resonates with cumin, cinnamon and fennel.  It's also loaded with wholesome vegetables and finished with coconut cream and a bright squeeze of lime.  It will warm your taste buds as well as your soul.  Maya Kaimal - Award winning cookbook author.
I can't say for sure if my soul was warmed - but I certainly did enjoy the soup.  Something that I have noticed, is that I am much more willing to try new foods these days.  And it seems that everything I try tastes good - I am sure that it is good to be truly hungry when eating a meal.

MULLIGATWANY SOUP from Costco, enough to make 6 cups is only $8.99

CALORIES BURNED

On Monday morning I decided to increase the 'resistance' on the elliptical machine which made the workout much harder.  In fact, I spent only 20 minutes on the machine on Monday.   I have recently re-discovered that excess exercise might run counter to my weight-loss ambitions.
