EVEN ON COVID-19, LEFT AND RIGHT ARE DIVIDED by Dennis Prager

EVEN ON COVID-19, LEFT AND RIGHT ARE DIVIDED
by Dennis Prager

If there is one thing on which you’d think left and right could agree, it would be the proper response to the present coronavirus. After all, COVID-19 doesn’t distinguish between left and right: Conservatives and liberals are just as likely to contract and even die from it.
Yet, it’s amazing how consistently left and right differ on even this issue.
Virtually every opinion piece in The New York Times, The Washington Post and every other mainstream, i.e., left-wing, journal share two characteristics: a sense of foreboding (millions will die) and an unshakeable conviction that to prevent mass death, the world’s economy must be shut down.
Meanwhile, virtually every opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal and on just about every conservative website contains less foreboding and asks more questions about whether the cure may be worse than the disease. To cite some examples:
March 11: Ben Shapiro published a piece titled “Our Fears About Coronavirus Are Overblown.”
March 16: The Hoover Institution published a piece by Richard A. Epstein that’s thesis was: “I believe that the current dire models radically overestimate the ultimate death toll.”
March 16: City Journal published conservative thinker Victor Davis Hanson’s piece that’s thesis was: “Our response could prove as harmful as the virus itself.”
March 17: My column titled “Why the Remedy May Be Worse Than the Disease” appeared on many conservative sites
March 19: The lead Wall Street Journal editorial was titled “Rethinking the Coronavirus Shutdown.”
March 19: A column titled “Will the Costs of a Great Depression Outweigh the Risks of Coronavirus?” appeared on The Federalist’s website.
March 24: The Wall Street Journal published a column by two Stanford professors of medicine titled “Is the Coronavirus as Deadly as They Say?”
Meanwhile, the liberal and left-wing media published hundreds of articles warning us of millions of deaths if we don’t shut down the American economy.
Or take the example of President Donald Trump’s announcement at a press conference on March 19 that hydroxychloroquine had “shown really good promise” in helping to cure COVID-19.
Virtually every left-wing news medium mocked him for making that claim.
March 21: “AP FACT CHECK: Trump’s Breathless Takes on Drugs for Virus.”
They implicitly or explicitly blamed the president for the death of an Arizona man who ingested a fish tank cleaner because it contained chloroquine phosphate (because the name sounds similar to hydroxychloroquine).
March 24: CBS News published a story headlined “Arizona Man Dies, Wife Ill After Taking Drug Touted as Virus Treatment: ‘Trump Kept Saying It Was Basically Pretty Much a Cure.'”
March 24: The left-wing site BuzzFeed simply lied about that story in order to blame the president: “A Man Died After Self-Medicating With a Form of a Drug That Trump Promoted as a Potential Treatment for the Coronavirus.”
March 24: The left-wing St. Louis Post-Dispatch did the same in its headline: “Man Dies After Taking Chloroquine Phosphate, Additive in Drug Touted by Trump as COVID-19 Treatment.”
March 24: The Democratic governor of Nevada, Steve Sisolak, issued an order that, in the words of the Nevada Health Response, “prohibits (the) prescribing and dispensing chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for a COVID-19 diagnosis.”
A particularly egregious example of the left-right divide on the coronavirus response appeared in The Washington Post on March 27. One of its columnists, Max Boot, wrote:
“Radio host Dennis Prager bemoaned our unwillingness to sacrifice lives as we did during World War II, saying ‘that attitude leads to appeasement’ and ‘cowardice.’ The United States lost 418,500 people in World War II … but it would be far worse to lose 2.2 million civilians — the worst-case estimate of the U.S. death toll if we let the novel coronavirus spread unimpeded.”
On my radio show and in my weekly PragerU “Fireside Chat,” I criticized New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the way he defended shutting down his state: “I want to be able to say to the people of New York: I did everything we could do. … And if everything we do saves just one life, I’ll be happy.”
It is hard to imagine a more morally absurd sentiment. Anyone who thinks rationally knows it is not worth depriving millions of people of their incomes, forcing thousands of companies to go out of business, causing recovering addicts to lapse back into addiction and much more economic and social damage to “save one life.”
As we are fighting a “war” against the virus, I used a war analogy to make my point. I noted that if we had fought World War II with the attitude that we cannot lose one life, we would never have fought the Nazis or the Japanese. I further noted that we do not make any social policy based on saving one life. For example, every time we raise the speed limit, we know thousands more people will die.
But the left went nuts. Max Boot in The Washington Post is only one example.
So, then, why this left-right gulf?
One reason, as I have written previously, is that hysteria is to the left what oxygen is to biological life. Leftists pride themselves on being rational. But the further left one goes, the more feelings displace reason.
A second reason is hatred of Trump. On the left, damaging Trump is more important than truth and more important than the welfare of the American people. If Trump believes hydroxychloroquine offers hope, let’s debunk its usefulness.
A third reason is leftists are afraid — of life and of death. Fear of life is why they build “safe spaces” on campuses for students who cannot handle a visiting speaker with whom they differ. And they are afraid of death. They undoubtedly find Patrick Henry’s famous cry, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” incomprehensible, if not downright foolish.
Even COVID-19 has brought no cease-fire in the ongoing American civil war.

TAX CUT TODAY?

Our President, Donald Trump, and the Republican Party are about to 'make good' on a promise to change our tax code. Naturally, there are some people who are unhappy. I believe that this is going to be good for America. Everyone knows that the fairest tax code of all would be a simple code where every American pays the same rate, for example 10% of income. We are not there yet, but I am convinced that the new tax law will be an improvement for many Americans. Every single day, I wake up to some new good news emanating from the White House. I understand why Democrats, Liberals and Lefties don't like Donald Trump. The mystery remains, why are there so many so-called Republicans and Conservatives who cling to their enmity for this man?  One theory: Donald Trump is governing like a true conservative, very few people believed durning the campaign that he was a conservative. Apparently, Trump was very honest about his core beliefs. I admit that I was surprised. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised nevertheless.

CONGRESS VOTED TO REPEAL OBAMACARE

Yes, it is true, Congress voted to repeal Obamacare.  In fact, they voted many times to do this when President Barack Obama was sitting in the Oval Office. This phony show vote was to convince morons (conservative republicans) like me that if they were ever given the real opportunity to repeal this abhorrent law, they would. How surprised these low-lifes in Congress must have been on that Tuesday in November last year when a Republican was elected to the Presidency. Now these low-lifes could no longer walk around screaming how bad Obamacare is. They were charged with the responsibility to actually do something about it. Effective governing is not one of the strong assets of the Republican Congress. Guess what, we are doomed. We usually lose to the liberal lefties in national elections. We always have to fight the liberal lefties in government. Now we just lost to the highfalutin' conservative Republicans in Congress, who refused to support a (less-than-perfect) bill that would have begun to dismantle Obamacare. I was looking for this new administration to erase Obama. Perhaps, the conservative members of our Congress, just managed to erase themselves. November 2018 will not be an enjoyable night as Congress seeks re-election. There must have been great parties in Washington DC last night as Democrats watched Republicans commit political suicide.

House Passes Obamacare Repeal And Replace Bill In Spite Of Obama’s Protests

by James Beattie February 3, 2015 at 3:51pm

On Tuesday, the House voted to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. This is the first time the House attached a provision requiring that Congress replace President Obama’s health care law. The House voted Tuesday 239 to 186 on H.R. 596, which would not only repeal Obamacare but force Congress to also replace the health care law. Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., sponsored the legislation. It now heads to the Senate, where its future is uncertain. 60 votes are required for cloture, and there are only 54 Republicans in the new Senate. Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., was one of the first to get on the offensive ahead of the House vote supporting the Obamacare appeal. “Instead of Obamcare’s one-size-fits-all approach, we need to pursue consumer-driven reforms that put patients, not bureaucrats, in charge of health care decisions,” Coats said in a press release ahead of the vote Tuesday. “This legislation starts that process.” One interesting note: three Republicans voted against the Obamacare repeal. The names, as flagged by Heidi Pryzblya of Bloomberg, were Reps. Robert Dold of Illinois, John Katko of New York, and Bruce Poliquin of Maine. No Democrats voted for the repeal.

It did not take any courage to vote against a law where there was an absolute guarantee that the vote would have exactly 0.0% of passing or affecting the life of a single American.  The vote that did not occur on this past Thursday and Friday, would have begun the process to dismantle Obamacare.  And since there were not enough votes to pass this new legislation. There was no vote. My level of disappointment is off the charts. I believe that President Donald Trump has many times bemoaned the stupid politicians that run this country - was he surely proved correct this past week.  Let me be among the first to welcome back House Leader Nancy Pelosi. If there is not a giant reconsideration of the damage caused this week, the Republicans will lost the House in November 2018. And if that happens.... then what? Obamacare has no chance of being repealed? Aren't we there already?

AMERICA'S SECOND CIVIL WAR

One of my favorite radio personalities and authors, is Dennis Prager. Last week he published a column indicating that our country is in a (non-violent) civil war. This does certainly seem to be the case. I found the column to be grim and truthful.

America's Second Civil War

Dennis Prager
|
Posted: Jan 24, 2017 12:01 AM

It is time for our society to acknowledge a sad truth: America is currently fighting its second Civil War.
In fact, with the obvious and enormous exception of attitudes toward slavery, Americans are more divided morally, ideologically and politically today than they were during the Civil War. For that reason, just as the Great War came to be known as World War I once there was World War II, the Civil War will become known as the First Civil War when more Americans come to regard the current battle as the Second Civil War.
This Second Civil War, fortunately, differs in another critically important way: It has thus far been largely nonviolent. But given increasing left-wing violence, such as riots, the taking over of college presidents’ offices and the illegal occupation of state capitols, nonviolence is not guaranteed to be a permanent characteristic of the Second Civil War.
There are those on both the left and right who call for American unity. But these calls are either naive or disingenuous. Unity was possible between the right and liberals, but not between the right and the left.
Liberalism — which was anti-left, pro-American and deeply committed to the Judeo-Christian foundations of America; and which regarded the melting pot as the American ideal, fought for free speech for its opponents, regarded Western civilization as the greatest moral and artistic human achievement and viewed the celebration of racial identity as racism — is now affirmed almost exclusively on the right and among a handful of people who don’t call themselves conservative.
The left, however, is opposed to every one of those core principles of liberalism.
Like the left in every other country, the left in America essentially sees America as a racist, xenophobic, colonialist, imperialist, warmongering, money-worshipping, moronically religious nation.
Just as in Western Europe, the left in America seeks to erase America’s Judeo-Christian foundations. The melting pot is regarded as nothing more than an anti-black, anti-Muslim, anti-Hispanic meme. The left suppresses free speech wherever possible for those who oppose it, labeling all non-left speech “hate speech.” To cite only one example, if you think Shakespeare is the greatest playwright or Bach is the greatest composer, you are a proponent of dead white European males and therefore racist.
Without any important value held in common, how can there be unity between left and non-left? Obviously, there cannot.
There will be unity only when the left vanquishes the right or the right vanquishes the left. Using the First Civil War analogy, American unity was achieved only after the South was vanquished and slavery was abolished.
How are those of us who oppose left-wing nihilism — there is no other word for an ideology that holds Western civilization and America’s core values in contempt — supposed to unite with “educators” who instruct elementary school teachers to cease calling their students “boys” and “girls” because that implies gender identity? With English departments that don’t require reading Shakespeare in order to receive a degree in English? With those who regard virtually every war America has fought as imperialist and immoral? With those who regard the free market as a form of oppression? With those who want the state to control as much of American life as possible? With those who repeatedly tell America and its black minority that the greatest problems afflicting black Americans are caused by white racism, “white privilege” and “systemic racism”? With those who think that the nuclear family ideal is inherently misogynistic and homophobic? With those who hold that Israel is the villain in the Middle East? With those who claim that the term “Islamic terrorist” is an expression of religious bigotry?
The third significant difference between the First and Second Civil Wars is that in the Second Civil war, one side has been doing nearly all the fighting. That is how it has been able to take over schools — from elementary schools, to high schools, to universities — and indoctrinate America’s young people; how it has taken over nearly all the news media; and how it has taken over entertainment media.
The conservative side has lost on every one of these fronts because it has rarely fought back with anything near the ferocity with which the left fights. Name a Republican politician who has run against the left as opposed to running solely against his or her Democratic opponent. And nearly all American conservatives, people who are proud of America and affirm its basic tenets, readily send their children to schools that indoctrinate their children against everything the parents hold precious. A mere handful protest when their child’s teacher ceases calling their son a boy or their daughter a girl, or makes “slave owner” the defining characteristic of the Founding Fathers.
With the defeat of the left in the last presidential election, the defeat of the left in two-thirds of the gubernatorial elections and the defeat of the left in a majority of House and Senate elections, this is likely the last chance liberals, conservatives and the right have to defeat the American left. But it will not happen until these groups understand that we are fighting for the survival of America no less than the Union troops were in the First Civil War.
