SNACKED

Snacking is something that I so successfully avoided when my weight initially dropped from 309 lbs down to about 220 lbs.  Over the past few weeks I have recently put back on about 20 of those pounds.  It is an understatement that the recent level of inactivity due to the hernia for the past 5 weeks have not been helpful to me. Now that the surgery is behind me, I am anticipating spending more and more time burning some calories and being much more active. While it remains true that one cannot undo poorly chosen ingested calories on a treadmill or elliptical machine - it is still a better hobby than sitting on a couch and snacking. Yesterday I 'snacked' and I couldn't be more pleased. It is because I broke my personal record on WORDS WITH FRIENDS.  My previous highest point total for one word was 'minivans' which earned 197 points.  My new record on WORDS WITH FRIENDS is 'SNACKED' which earned 218 points. There is some kind of cosmic irony that this is the word that is likely to remain my personal record for quite some time. It took me more than 2 years to best the previous record that I had scored with 'minivans.' What is your highest word score?

new personal record Words with Friends - 218 points

Tuesday was the first day since my laparoscopic hernia surgery that I attempted (and succeeded) to have an actual cardio workout. It was not the most vigorous workout that I had ever had - but it was not nothing. As per doctors orders I have removed plastic bandages over the two incision spots on my abdominal area. My followup appointment with the surgeon has been scheduled for Friday the 13th in about two weeks time. I am on my way back.

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN...SOMETIMES

I begin today by revisiting a blog post of my from January, earlier this year:
Monday, January 5, 2015
ISAAC NEWTON - LAW OF GRAVITY
Isaac Newton (1642-1726) is credited with this quote: "What goes up, must come down."   Who knows if he really did say this or not.   We know that it is not inevitable that when one's weight goes up, that it will likely go down.   In fact, it is highly unlikely without a massive intervention on oneself. In recent years, gasoline prices have gone up.  It was only a few summers ago when it appeared that the gas price was destined to cross the $5.00/gallon barrier.   In the past, every time I gassed up, there was an additional expense of at least $3.00 for junk food.  Sometimes things do change.   I filled my tank yesterday on the way to Cincinnati.   I paid the stunning price of $1.659/gallon.  My total transaction at the gas station was only $18.00.  In recent days, and I expect in the weeks to come, both gas prices and my weight will continue to fall.  It is inevitable that gas prices will rise again.   It is not inevitable that my weight will rise again.   I have already seen that movie and I don't like the ending.   This time, I am determined to lose the weight, and learn how to keep it off.   Yesterday, I consumed less than 800 calories, and after my dinner I felt full.   My stomach is no longer stretched to the limit 24 hours per day.  After seven years of eating like a moron,  it now seems so easy to have a healthy diet.
As I re-read this post from nearly one year ago, which was written when my new lifestyle had started only one dozen days earlier, I found it amusing that some of my prognostications proved true.  For example, at the time of this January 4 blog post, I was a still a whopping 294.5 lbs.  (I had lost a grand total of 14.5 lbs - AND I WAS ECSTATIC ABOUT THAT PROGRESS!)  I correctly predicted that I would continue to lose weight.  My current weight loss as of last Saturday was 94.5 lbs.  On the other hand, my prediction that gas prices would continue to fall was a bit optimistic.  I do not think that I ever paid as little for gasoline as I did on January 4, 2014.   The thing that made me want to revisit this  blog post of nearly one year ago is that yesterday, December 10, 2014, I filled my tank at a price of $1.699 per gallon (just a fraction higher than the lowest low that I enjoyed last January)  It made me think that it might be time for new predictions.  It appears that gas prices again are preparing to find new lows and it appears that my weight is preparing to find new lows.  In the course of the year, there was one weigh-in where my scale reported 213.9 lbs on April 25.  However, I never approached that low number again all year until right about now.  Last Saturday, my weight was 214.5lbs and there remains the possibility that I might record a new low tomorrow.  However, weight is a funny thing - it is impossible to gauge where one's weight will be as it can fluctuate 2 or 3 lbs just overnight.

True about many things...but not true about he price of gasoline and certainly not true of one's weight.
.

Welcome to Chillicothe, Ohio.  I visited a favorite shop in this town today, and I made time afterwards to enjoy a trail.  It was the first time in nearly one week that I walked.  It was also the first time in a while that I stopped at a Subway and ordered my healthy lunch of choice, as I had for so many weeks earlier this year - Double Chicken Chopped Salad (220 calories)

The entire walk was along a paved bicycle/foot path.  I more or less parked in the  middle and walked about 2. 5 miles south and then returned to the starting point and then more or less walked another 2.5 miles north and back.  When it was all over - I had logged 10 miles.  (I am trying to wean myself away from the 'need' to walk 10 miles every day.  I expect to mix it up a bit in the coming weeks, with visits to the elliptical machine, and perhaps walks of 'only' five miles as well.  I enjoyed another day when I consumed reduced calories, and managed to eat fairly well.

SEAN CONNERY

At the International Quilt Show in Houston, I continued to see people that I have not seen in over a year.  My body certainly casts a different shadow than the one it cast one year ago.  One year ago, in this very same city at this very same show, I weighed north of 300 lbs.  Fast forward one year later and I am 'only' 219 lbs.  There were a few people that I saw over the past two days that were 'shocked' at my new look.  A few people asked if I had lost this weight by design, half afraid that I might be suffering from some horrible illness responsible for this loss of poundage.  I am used to this line of questioning.  I take great pleasure in explaining that this change in physique has been purposeful.  In years past, I almost never hung out with my colleagues much longer after 11:00PM or Midnight as I was simply too tired.  I still do not aspire to do this every night - but it is fun to have enough energy to decide to join my colleagues after dinner once in a while.  Sometimes, things get accomplished in the wee hours of the evening.  After dinner, our group walked over to another hotel closer to the convention center where many of our Quilt Market associates are staying.  Aside from having some fun, drinking a couple (or a few drinks) I did run into one of my customers that I wished to see here at the show. I spoke with her and she and did promise to visit my booth today.  This little detail can't happen if I am holed up in my hotel room instead of mixing it up every once in a while.  I also met a customer of my brother, from Oregon, who denied that she had ever met me before. It's not like we are best friends or anything - but I do know that I barely resemble that blob that I used to be.  This woman told me that I looked like Sean Connery.

I don't really think I look like Sean Connery - but I sure ain't offended to hear it

I am sure that it is highly possible that she was drinking a bit too much. But you know what.... I have been around inebriated people before and no one in my entire life has ever told me that I looked like anyone that I would want to look like.  For example, being told that I looked like John Goodman could have potentially happened but who would have wanted to be told that in the past.

It would have been no compliment to be told that I looked like John Goodman in the past. It would be OK to be told that now as John Goodman recently shed a lot of weight.  Nevertheless, he has a lot of hair atop his head - so it is very unlikely that I would be told that I looked like him.  Still, I have always admired him as an actor.

By the way, John Goodman, has recently lost a lot of weight and he looks good too!  I still don't look like him, as he has a full head of hair.  Me and Sean Connery do apparently have the baldness thing in common.  It is likely that that is the only thing that we do have in common.  Still, hearing that comment that I resembled Connery made me smile.  Sean Connery has been the guy that I have always considered the number one best looking guy on the planet.  If some people want to believe that I look like him - who am I to argue?
