IT'S SNOWTIME!

November 10 seems a bit early for snow, even in Chicago. Early it may be, but snow it did. It appeared to me that the accumulations were just under an inch. Even so, as I was walking in the city, I actually passed some people who broke out snowblowers to clear the sidewalk. When I set out for my eight mile hike, the temperature was uncomfortably around 25°F (although lucky me, it with the wind, it felt like 10°F)  The temperature was not the headline of the day. Chicago was experiencing its first snow of the year. It made for some slippery conditions, and sure enough I did lose my footing once and spilled to the ground. Undaunted, I brushed myself off and continued on my merry way. Winter in Chicago has arrived. It's SNOWTIME!

Another reminder this week that the junk food that I might eat and 'forget' to log still counts. My 'diet' has lots of room for improvement. Amazingly my weight this week was exactly what it was last week. So while it is disappointing to not have made any additional progress, at least I did not go backwards.

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

It is not much of a breaking news story that during winter it is cold in Chicago. Although with the arrival of the so-called polar vortex, it will be extra cold this week.

Coldness is course relative. For example, after a few days of sub-freezing weather, a day where the mercury rises to 40°F can feel warm.  Here is the ten-day forecast for Chicago.

I thought that we were due for some unbearably cold weather, until I checked out the weather forecast for Yakutsk, Russia.  Now that is some cold weather!  Perhaps I will temper (no pun intended) my complaining about the falling temperatures. During the next ten days in Yakutsk, Russia the warmest temperature that they can expect to experience will be -22°F sometime on Tuesday. That 'heatwave' will be short-lived as the temperatures will plunge to -43°F one week from Wednesday.  During this same period, the coldest it is forecast in Chicago is -2°F. So what, really, do we have to complain about!  By the way, Yakutsk is a very real city with a population that exceeds a quarter of a million people.

Yakutsk

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Yakutsk (RussianЯкутскIPA: [jɪˈkutsk]YakutДьокуускайJokūskaipronounced [ɟokuːskaj]) is the capital city of the Sakha RepublicRussia, located about 450 kilometers (280 mi) south of the Arctic Circle. Population: 269,601 (2010 Census)210,642 (2002 Census)186,626 (1989 Census).
Yakutsk is a major port on the Lena River. It is served by the Yakutsk Airport as well as the smaller Magan Airport. It is a major supplier of diamonds. Its population is almost 300,000 and its average winter temperature is −34 °C (−30 °F), which makes Yakutsk the coldest city of its size or greater in the world.

Climate

With an extreme subarctic climate (Köppen climate classificationDfd), Yakutsk has the coldest winter temperatures for any city. Average monthly temperatures range from +19.5 °C (67.1 °F) in July to −38.6 °C (−37.5 °F) in January, and only Norilsk has a lower mean annual temperature for any settlement of over 100,000. Yakutsk is the biggest city built on continuous permafrost, and most houses there are built on concrete piles.
The coldest temperatures ever recorded on the planet outside Antarctica occurred in the basin of the Yana River to the northeast of Yakutsk, making it the coldest inhabited place on earth. Although winters are extremely cold and long – Yakutsk has never reported a temperature above freezing between 10 November and 14 March inclusive – summers are warm (though rather short), with daily maximum temperatures occasionally exceeding +30 °C (86 °F), making the seasonal temperature differences for the region the greatest in the world. The lowest temperature recorded in Yakutsk was −64.4 °C (−83.9 °F) on 5 February 1891 and the highest temperatures +38.4 °C (101.1 °F) on 17 July 2011 and +38.3 °C (100.9 °F) on 15 July 1943. The hottest month in records going back to 1834 has been July 1894 with a mean of +23.2 °C (73.8 °F)[14] and the coldest January 1900 which averaged −51.2 °C (−60.2 °F).

CLIMATE CHANGE IS NOT A HOAX

One thing that has been constant over the four+ billion years that Earth has been around. The climate is always changing. Climate change is not a hoax. The hoax is that the climate change is caused by human events, and that humans can control the climate. Even the hysterical hoaxers dropped the idea of Global Warming when it was seen that the temperatures on Earth were not rising. Just as thirty years ago they dropped the Global Cooling hysterics when they discovered that the earth was not heading into an immediate ice age. It is very difficult to be hysterical about something that is not happening. Global warming may be a hoax but not Local Warming. Local warming is the phenomenon where a specific geographic location experiences warmer weather. Studies have shown that this phenomenon is caused by... summer.  Yesterday I experienced some Local Warming. The temperature was only 91° F, but with the so-called heat index...It felt like 106°F. Toward the end of my urban hike yesterday, it became increasingly obvious that a thunderstorm was going to blanket Chicago. It seemed that within a few seconds that the temperature dropped 20° F just as it started to rain. I took shelter indoors for about 30 minutes before I resumed my trip and completed my ten mile hike.

LOOKING FOR A DEFINITION OF STUPID?

Secretary of State John Kerry said in Vienna on Friday that air conditioners and refrigerators are as big of a threat to life as the threat of terrorism posed by groups like the Islamic State. The Washington Examiner reported that Kerry was in Vienna to amend the 1987 Montreal Protocol that would phase out hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, from basic household and commercial appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, and inhalers.“As we were working together on the challenge of [ISIS] and terrorism,” Kerry said. “It’s hard for some people to grasp it, but what we–you–are doing here right now is of equal importance because it has the ability to literally save life on the planet itself.”
