NEW FAVORITE GOOFY HAT

I always have to wear a hat when I am outside. In the summer, I wear a baseball cap to avoid sunburn on the top of my head. In the winter, I always have to wear a hat to keep my head warm. Last week I found my new favorite and highly goofy hat. This NFL Licensed product produced by 'New Era' fits snugly on my head and emulates the look of the leather football helmets from days gone by. I never would have purchased this for the full retail price of $24.99, but I was lucky to find just this one on sale for $6.99. At that price, I didn't hesitate. You don't have to tell me that I look goofy wearing this. I know it.

NFL Hall of Fame Sid Luckman of the Chicago Bears (1939-1950) wearing a leather helmet.  It is hard to imagine how this protected a player. This is the style of helmet that my goofy hat is trying to emulate.

I believe that I look far less like Sid Luckman and much more like Rocket J. Squirrel.

THIS IS A JOB FOR BALACLAVA MAN

I 'needed' to experience what a walk would feel like in temperatures that were below zero. I got my chance on Monday morning. I did not desire to take a ten mile walk in this frigid weather. In fact, I thought that I might only have the ability to walk one mile. I did manage three miles.  As I set out for my quick walk outside, and noted the temperature -2°F, I knew that this was a job for 'balaclava man!' (I even wore a hat on top of my balaclava.) It did keep my head warm, although the part of my face that was exposed to the cold was still somewhat uncomfortable. I wore enough layers over my body so that I was (mostly) warm (or at least well-protected).  My one pair of gloves did not keep the cold out, and by the time I returned home, my fingers were getting numb. Still, I was glad that I managed to get some outdoor steps today.

At 7:45AM when I ventured outside, the temperature was -2°F degrees. Supposedly it 'felt' like -16°F.   I know that that my gloves were ineffective against this cold.
Not only was I wearing a balaclava, I wore a cap on top of my balaclava. My head was perfectly warm, but my face was still exposed to the -2°F temperature during my early morning 3 mile urban hike.

Balaclava

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
balaclava, also known as a balaclava helmet or ski mask, is a form of cloth headgear designed to expose only part of the face. Depending on style and how it is worn, only the eyes, mouth and nose, or just the front of the face are unprotected. Versions with a full face opening may be rolled into a hat to cover the crown of the head or folded down as a collar around the neck. The name comes from their use at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War, referring to a town near Sevastopol in Crimea.

History

Traditional balaclavas were knitted from wool. Modern versions are also made from silk, cotton, polypropylene, neoprene, acrylic or polar fleece.

This type of headgear was known in the 19th century as an Uhlan cap or a Templar cap.
During the Crimean War in 1854 handmade balaclavas were sent over to the British troops to help protect them from the bitter cold weather. British troops required this aid, as their own supplies (warm clothing, weatherproof quarters, and food) never arrived in time.[3] According to Richard Rutt in his History of Handknitting, the name "balaclava helmet" was not used during the war but appears much later, in 1881.

I am slowly getting much more productive on the elliptical machine. Recently during my 99 minute workouts I had been struggling to 'burn' 1000 calories.  Clearly I was not properly prepared, nor was I trying hard enough on this equipment. Yesterday, during my 99 minute workout I 'burned' 1456 calories. That is a considerable improvement from my recent efforts.

SURVIVAL QUIZ

Today's blog is a bit of a survival quiz.  I want you imagine that you are in Chicago walking on the Northwestern University Campus.  You would like to walk from Point A to Point B without being accosted, yelled at, or otherwise molested. You can chose any of these three t-shirts to wear.  Which shirt would you chose to wear so that no one would give you a hard time and you would not need to worry about being called a thug (or worse)?

Shirt A: Che Guevara
Shirt B: Fidel Castro
Shirt C: Donald Trump
If you think you could wear Shirt A: Che Guevara or Shirt B: Fidel Castro on any college campus without anyone giving you a second look, you have passed this quiz. You live in reality. The reality is sickening, but it is reality. If you think that one could wear Shirt C: Donald Trump on a college campus without being bothered, you may be patriot, but you are also a person who enjoys confrontation and enjoys taking risks. The thing is, liberal universities which pride themselves on their 'inclusiveness' and their 'tolerance' and neither inclusive or tolerant when in comes to accepting things or ideas with which they disagree. In fact, these days, the wearing of a Donald Trump shirt might even be considered hate speech by the elite geniuses on campus.

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

The reason that I needed to discuss this was because yesterday, during my ten mile walk in Chicago, I did wear my MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN hat. My wife bought this hat for me. It does keep me warm. And while I did wear it for all of the ten miles that I walked in Chicago yesterday, I did not rile anyone up as I probably only passed about 10 people all morning as it was 20°F outside. This is a hat that I cannot wear when I am visiting my customers, as apparently the idea of making America great again is considered too volatile to too many people.
