MOUNT BALDHEAD (DAY 88)

The highpoint (pun intended) of my day yesterday took place after my 5.5 mile hike at Van Buren State Park. The highpoint came when I successfully climbed the 300 steps at Mt. Baldhead in Saugatuck during an additional .75 mile hike at a second location about 20 miles north of Van Buren State Park.

Mt. Baldhead. Saugatuck, Michigan. In the first picture I am contemplating the 300 step climb. In the second picture, I am smiling having completed the 300 step climb.

Mount Baldhead, also known as Bald Head PeakBaldhead, and Radar Hill is a summit of a hill in Allegan County, Michigan. Mount Baldhead is a hill and a sand dune, in the Sand Hills between Kalamazoo Lake and Lake Michigan. It is located northwest of Saugatuck. It has an elevation of 794 feet / 242 meters.

ONE MILE

Yesterday I spent 129 minutes on the treadmill with the 'grade' set to '15.'  I walked at a rate of 3mph until I had 'traveled' 6.73 miles. This distance, 6.73 miles is the equivalent of 35534 feet (5280 feet=1 mile). In order to calculate my 'elevation' that I reached on this imaginary trek up a mountain, I need only multiply 35534 x .15 which works out to 5330.  I 'climbed' up an imaginary mountain one mile.  A couple of days ago I had figured out that this was a doable goal, and it did not take me too long before I attempted to make my successful 'ascent.'

3500 FEET

On Wednesday, I calculated that I had climbed a virtual elevation of about 2000 feet spending 60 minutes on the treadmill, 'traveling 2.55 miles at a 15 incline.  On Thursday, I decided to see if I could increase my elevation with more time spent on the treadmill at a slightly faster pace.

100 minutes.
4.49 miles ---> 23,707.2 feet x .15 ----> 3,556 feet of virtual elevation.

100 minutes, 4.49 miles, incline 15 ---> calories burned 1026

There are some differences when 'climbing' 3556 feet while remaining in the same spot. The air does not get thinner as one 'ascends.'  And no matter how tired one gets on the way up, one does not have to contend with the reality of the requirement to climb back down as one does on a real mountain.  Still, even for a virtual climb, 3556 feet of elevation is some kind of accomplishment. Now I know what one of my future goals will be.

That is to virtually climb ONE MILE.
I would need to 'walk' 35,200.2 feet on a treadmill with a 15 incline.
This would translate to 6.667 miles.
If I were to maintain a pace of 2.5 miles per hour.
This would be one continuous treadmill workout of 2.67 hours, which would translate to 2 hr 40 min.
OK, a new goal has just been born.
I wonder how long it will take me to try to tackle this.

APPALACHIAN TRAIL

On Sunday, due to a family emergency which involved bone fractures but not life-or-death, my trip to Connecticut was curtailed. Even so, I managed to squeeze in a five mile hike prior to leaving Connecticut.  My hike on the previous day was memorable as it was a quick jaunt from the parking lot at the trailhead to the beautiful vista on a mountain ridge. The trail was exceptionally interesting to me as it was a part of the Appalachian Trail. With this one mile section of the Appalachian Trail now completed, I need hike another 2,200 miles or so to be considered a 'thru hiker.'  At this point in my life, that seems rather unlikely, still it was great fun to hike on part of the trail.  My guide on this quick hike was my sister-in-law and we did meet two bonafide thru hikers that had started the trail in
Georgia, approximately 1500 miles to the south. They were apparently both young, healthy, and fit. How could one not be after hiking 1500 miles?

from wikipedia...
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, generally known as the Appalachian Trail or simply the A.T., is a marked hiking trail in the eastern United States extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The trail is about 2,200 miles (3,500 km) long, though the precise length changes over time as parts are modified or rerouted. The trail passes through 14 states: GeorgiaNorth Carolina,TennesseeVirginiaWest VirginiaMarylandPennsylvaniaNew JerseyNew York,ConnecticutMassachusettsVermontNew Hampshire, and Maine.
The Appalachian Trail was completed in 1937 after more than a decade of work, although improvements and changes continue. It is maintained by 31 trail clubs and multiple partnerships,[2] and managed by the National Park ServiceUnited States Forest Service, and the nonprofit Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The majority of the trail is in forest or wild lands, although some portions traverse towns, roads and farms. The trail conservancy claims that the Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only trail in the world.
At least 2 million people are said to do at least one day-hike on the trail each year. Thru-hikers attempt to hike it in its entirety in a single season — more than 2,700 people thru-hiked the trail in 2014 — and some hike from one end to the other, then turn around and thru-hike the trail the other way, known as a "yo-yo". Many books, memoirs, web sites, and fan organizations are dedicated to these pursuits.

RIB MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

The day started with a four hour visit with a customer in Madison, Wisconsin. Once I was finished there, I had a quick lunch and headed 100+ miles north to Wausau to be in place for a Wednesday appointment. I arrived in Wasau at 6:00PM and headed straight for RIB MOUNTAIN STATE PARK. Approximately one and one half miles from the actual park entrance was a trail that led to the park, and that is precisely where I parked my car - at the trailhead for the BONE & JOINTS TRAIL.

The Bone & Joint Trail led directly to Rib Mountain State Park.

Rib Mountain as seen from five miles away.

The high point (no pun intended) of this visit to this park, was the 60 foot tall VAN DOUSER OBSERVATION TOWER which was erected in 1959. The OBSERVATION TOWER is at the peak of Rib Mountain. It was 96 steps to the top.  I counted them.
.
Another hiker offered to take this photo and the one below up on the Observation Tower.

Since this mountain is used as a ski slope in the wintertime.... There were trails leading down and up the various slopes.  Naturally, I hiked down one slope and hiked back up another. After the 20 mile hike on Monday, this six mile adventure seemed like a 'walk in the park.' (Which of course, was exactly what it was... a walk in the state park)
Those are ski lifts over my right shoulder... It's hard to tell the incline of the mountain from this shot.
.
After I climbed UP the mountain which is serviced by ski lifts in the winter.... It is still difficult to see the incline.

from wikipedia....

Rib Mountain, also known as Rib Hill, is a glacially-eroded monadnock in central Wisconsin, located in the Town of Rib Mountain in Marathon County. Composed ofquartzite covered with a softer syenite sheath, it was intruded about 1.5 billion years ago.
Rib Mountain is near Wausau on the west side of the Wisconsin River, just west of Interstate 39 and just south of Highway 29.
Rib Mountain is almost 4 miles (6.4 km) long and peaks at 1,924 feet (586 m) above sea level and 760 feet (230 m) above the local terrain, making it the point with the greatest difference in height from peak to surrounding terrain in the state of Wisconsin. The Rib River and Little Rib River are nearby.
Rib Mountain is home to the Rib Mountain State Park and the Granite Peak Ski Area. The peak is also the site of transmitters for radio and TV stations in the Wausau area, and is the namesake for Wisconsin Public Television's WHRM-TV (Channel 20) and WHRM-FM (90.9), Wisconsin Public Radio's news and classical network station for the area.
It also makes room for the transmitter at the top for WIFC.

When the ski area opened on the slopes of Rib Mountain in 1937, it was one of the first ski areas in North America. Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont had opened a few years earlier in 1934. Sun Valley in Idaho had become the nation's first ski area in the western states in 1936.
