HAPPY HALLOWEEN

I don't think I did a great job in calorie control during my weekend in Houston for International QuiltMarket. I am resigned to the fact that my weight loss streak may reverse itself for a week. I am also going to make sure that I get back on program and start racking up some successful weeks again. So not matter, how badly my scale might annoy me this Saturday, I am getting back to on track starting today. Happy Halloween.

CALORIE DEFICIT

It has been a very, very long time since I have achieved a calorie deficit for a complete day. On Tuesday, my eating was controlled, and I did manage nearly a two hour suburban hike in Forsyth, Illinois prior to sunset. I am well aware that the calories that my MapMyWalk application credit me for this walk are likely highly inflated, but still, a 7.5 mile hike has to burn a few calories. I am dangerously close to 250 lbs, I have no desire to crash through yet another unwelcome plateau. One day of seriousness, will not change the direction of my weight gains, but I am fairly certain that the expression, that a journey of many miles begins with the first step has an application to my condition. So, Tuesday, was a first good step in the right direction.

ONE MILE

Yesterday I spent 129 minutes on the treadmill with the 'grade' set to '15.'  I walked at a rate of 3mph until I had 'traveled' 6.73 miles. This distance, 6.73 miles is the equivalent of 35534 feet (5280 feet=1 mile). In order to calculate my 'elevation' that I reached on this imaginary trek up a mountain, I need only multiply 35534 x .15 which works out to 5330.  I 'climbed' up an imaginary mountain one mile.  A couple of days ago I had figured out that this was a doable goal, and it did not take me too long before I attempted to make my successful 'ascent.'

BITMOJI

I guess I am becoming a modern man.  I have started to occasionally experiment with adding an emoji (or two) to emails and texts. Since I have started using emoji's, I just discovered an application that help you design your own avatar (which one designs to look as one likes)  The application is called BITMOJI. It is a free app available on itunes (and android) and once you create your own personal avatar, there are scores and scores of personalized emojis that one can use in an email or text message.  This is how I have been feeling lately.  

This captures the way I have been feeling recently.

TALE OF THREE ELLIPTICAL MACHINES

Yesterday at the YMCA in Toledo, the maximum session on any of their fitness equipment is preset to 28 minutes plus 5 minute cooldown.  I chose to set the machines that I was on to 'CALORIE BURN'  Although the brand of machines that I used was the same, PRECOR.  I switched machines for every session.  The first session was on the PRECOR EFX elliptical machine without moveable levers for the arms to push/pull.

The next machine was a PRECOR AMT (Adaptive Motion Trainer) where the workout registered 494 calories.

And for the last session, I was back on another PRECOR EFX machine, but this was had the levers to work the arms to improve upper body strength as well.

I do not know what this little experiment proved, other than that the same 33 minute session with the same setting on three different machines resulted in highly variable 'calorie burn' numbers. The most enjoyable machine was the AMT (Adaptive Motion Trainer).  Oddly, it seemed the easiest machine to use, although it 'rewards' its user with the highest calorie burn.  One thing, I do know... After the three of these three thirty-three minute workouts was concluded - I had burned some number of calories as I was soaking wet from sweat. How many calories burned, is anybody's guess... All I can do is record the number that the machines report.
