CALORIE DEFICIT

It has been a very, very long time since I have achieved a calorie deficit for a complete day. On Tuesday, my eating was controlled, and I did manage nearly a two hour suburban hike in Forsyth, Illinois prior to sunset. I am well aware that the calories that my MapMyWalk application credit me for this walk are likely highly inflated, but still, a 7.5 mile hike has to burn a few calories. I am dangerously close to 250 lbs, I have no desire to crash through yet another unwelcome plateau. One day of seriousness, will not change the direction of my weight gains, but I am fairly certain that the expression, that a journey of many miles begins with the first step has an application to my condition. So, Tuesday, was a first good step in the right direction.

Tuesday: calories consumed 1160, calories burned during 7.5 mile hike 1330

LOST MY SECOND TURKEY

Regular readers of this blog might remember that nearly one month ago, January 21, I  reported that I had lost 24 lbs in 24 days and to highlight that achievement I posted a photograph of myself holding a 23 lb turkey.

As of yesterday, February 14, I have now lost 46 lbs in 52 days.
(I never believed that I was going to continue to lose exactly one pound per day.  Nevertheless, 46 lbs in 52 days ain't too shabby!)

46 lbs = TWO TURKEYS

Naturally, I needed to return to the supermarket to take a new picture.

FEBRUARY 14, 2015   On this date, I weighed myself
and discovered that I had lost 46 lbs since December 24.
I had wanted to hold two turkeys that weighed 46 lbs, and
the two turkeys that I did find only weighed 42 lbs.
For the purposes of this photo - that's close enough!
(I am wearing my brand-new 44 waist blue jeans)

JANUARY 21, 2015   Back on that date, I had lost 24 lbs and posed with a 23 lb turkey to visualize my accomplishment.  On this date, I was happy to wear my size 48 waist blue jeans.  They have since been donated to Goodwill.

80 MILES

Last week, I logged 50 miles 'walking' on my treadmill. I admit I was very impressed with myself. This week, I turned it up a notch. As always I only 'walked' one hour at a time. I always rested at least a couple of hours between 'walks.' Last Saturday (first day of the week) I 'walked' twice, 2 hours total, 8 miles. Starting Sunday, I spent three sessions per day, each lasting one hour, logging 12 'miles' per day always at 4 mph. Today is Friday morning, and I will definitely 'walk' three times today so that my weekly total will be 80 MILES.

80 miles 'walked' on the treadmill in one week @ 4 mph (20 hours) burning approximately  12,000 CALORIES!
I have been assuming that each time I spent one hour on the treadmill that I was burning approximately 600 calories. Last evening, I double-checked five different websites that calculate calories burned for various exercises. Although each website produced a different result - the average was indeed slightly more than 600 calories using my weight last recorded of 274 lbs.  I just wanted to make sure that my estimate of calories burned was correct.

I am restating that my goal for exercise in the future is to follow my doctor's orders: "Exercise regularly.  Aerobic exercise like fast walking 4 to 6 days per week." OK, so I went a little (a lot) overboard this week. I had the opportunity and I seized it.  I 'carped' my diem! (Carpe Diem)

In conjunction with this 20 hours of exercise, I enjoyed another week where each day I kept my caloric intake below 1000 calories. In 24 hours, when I step onto my scale I am expecting to see a very rewarding result. I know that people who are losing weight sometimes hit various plateaus. This will not be a plateau week. I am fairly certain of that.

This week I spent 20 hours on the treadmill.  'Walking' 4 mph - I logged 80 miles!
