Day 3, 2019 Revival, ELKHART

On Monday, I drove to Elkhart to be in place for a Tuesday morning appointment. I ate pretty well, and I managed a 6 mile urban hike. Good Day.

GENUINE FAKE NEWS

To all of you lefties out there who keep your head buried in the sand and refuse to acknowledge the existence of honest-to-goodness genuine fake news from the dishonest media, here's the latest example. The two Morning Joe nitwits (Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski) on MSNBC (National Broadcasting Company subsidiary) aired a news show, the Morning Joe on Friday morning. Each day during the week this live moronic show is watched by braindead Americans in search of their morning fix of Republican bashing. On this day, both hosts talked about their Thanksgiving dinner on the previous day.  Then they went about their normal daily activities of bashing our President. One snafu emerged. This was a taped segment. MSNBC aired something that they tried to pawn off a a live broadcast when it was taped. Can you get more fake than that? Democrats are not hampered by the flow of time, the flow of history of the flow of facts to report news and draw conclusions. Here is another example: Former FBI Director, James Comey wrote a memo exonerating Hillary Clinton from the illegal email/server investigation BEFORE the investigation was completed. Any problems with that? For people with a functioning mind, there might be yes. For others, probably no.

‘Morning Joe,’ did you really just pretape your post-Thanksgiving banter?

.
The hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” did the usual day-after Thanksgiving kibitzing on the air on Friday morning, telling viewers about their turkey dinners and mentioning the big football game the night before. One problem: None of those things had actually happened at the time Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Co. started talking about them. The program that aired Friday morning was taped Wednesday, but made to look and sound as if it was airing live. “Morning Joe” airs live on MSNBC five days a week. It features discussions of breaking or very recent news events. Friday’s program had all the earmarks of a typical “Morning Joe” and few viewers seemed to notice that it wasn’t happening in real time. MSNBC offered no announcement or statement to viewers that it was a taped program. The only indirect clue was at the bottom of the screen: The “Live” graphic that normally appears was removed. The rest was cooked up to appear as if it was happening in real time. Brzezinski opened the program by saying, “Day after Thanksgiving! Hoo! I’m stuffed.” The second segment picked up the after-holiday theme. “I always cook the turkey with the guts in it!” Brzezinski said. “Joe didn’t notice. He ate the bag,” quipped co-host Willie Geist, pretending Scarborough had consumed Brzezinski’s theoretical turkey. “It was good!” Scarborough said. He added, “Well, you know, the game made up for it . . .” Scarborough then turned to Rick Tyler, an MSNBC contributor who was Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign spokesman. “How was your Thanksgiving?” he asked. “Very successful,” responded Tyler. “Although the conversations were interesting.” “I bet!” said Brzezinski. The panel then swung into a discussion of the pedophile controversy surrounding Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore. The illusion that the discussion was live was fostered by the news crawl at the bottom of the screen, which was added over the taped discussion, and a clock showing the time in various time zones. The hosts never got around to talking about Friday morning’s biggest story, the deadly terrorist attack on a mosque in Egypt — because it hadn’t happened yet when they taped. The crawl mentioned it. An MSNBC spokeswoman declined to comment. But an executive confirmed that the program wasn’t live. “There was no intention to trick viewers,” she said. “Would it have helped if there was a disclaimer” referencing it as a delayed broadcast? “Maybe. But that’s not typically done.” As is, she said, “They’re having fun” with the pretense that it’s live. A longtime viewer of the program noticed that Friday’s edition had none of the usual discussion of breaking news and contacted The Washington Post to inquire if “Morning Joe” was presenting “fake news.” He said he was surprised to see Scarborough and Brzezinski appearing in a New York studio on the Friday after Thanksgiving. “I was quite flabbergasted by the way they were so deceptive about this . . . especially when they are always so quick to castigate lying [or] deception they attribute to others,” said the viewer, who asked not to be identified. Scarborough and Brzezinski have engaged in a long-running feud with President Trump over many issues, including the president’s veracity. The hostilities seemed to crest in June when Trump attacked the couple in an early-morning tweet in which he criticized Brzezinski’s appearance.

TURKEY RUN STATE PARK

Yesterday I found the best closest state park to my home city of Chicago - Turkey Run State Park.  Who knew that Indiana which is basically as flat as Illinois over much of the state was hiding this treasure. Until I 'discovered' this park on the internet on Thursday evening - I certainly did not know about it.
Turkey Run State Park is an Indiana state park located in Parke County, Indiana, in the west-central part of the state on State Road 47 2 miles (3.2 km) east of U.S. 41. It was Indiana's second state park, with the first parcel of land being purchased in 1916 at the cost of $40,200 when the State Park system was first established during the Indiana state centennial. It hosts the Turkey Run Inn, built in 1919. The origin of the name "Turkey Run" is unknown but the most accepted theory is that wild turkeys would congregate in the gorges (or "runs") for warmth where early settlers in the area would trap them in dead-end gorges and hunt them with ease.
A system of trails offers hikers plenty of outing opportunities during the summer months when the drainage is relatively free of water, and the suspension footbridge across Sugar Creek, the main drainage provides access to trails on the far side. Trail 3 is particularly noted for its ruggedness, including ladders and narrow but deep gorges. Floating down Sugar Creek through the park in either inner tubes, canoes, or kayaks is very popular in the summer months. There are 3-mile (4.8 km), 8-mile (13 km), or even 11-to-15-mile (18 to 24 km) trips down Sugar Creek. Also, in the spring when heavy rains and snow melt flood the narrow gorges, many more adventurous hikers will go "creek stomping" through the narrow gorges. However, the fast moving current, steep gorge walls, and unpredictable contours of the creek beds make this activity dangerous if the water level is high.
The hikes start by crossing a very beautiful suspension bridge.

This is me in the far distance on the suspension bridge that leads to the best trails
suspension bridge photo taken by a fellow hiker at the end of the day.
This was a 'selfie' taken when no one else was around to snap a photo for me at the start of the hike.

I had no major troubles traversing the water-starved creeks and wet rocks as my visit yesterday was  in late summer. Let me amend that. Twice I took a step and my left foot was completely engulfed in water. This is particularly funny to me. Last year when I purchased these hiking shoes for my hike up and down Half Dome in Yosemite - I purposefully did NOT buy shoes with water resistance.  I figured California was in drought and water resistance would have just added an unnecessary expense to the shoes. Two Things. First, although California was in a drought, we did managed to catch rain on our way down the mountain on that October day last year. Second, I apparently was unaware that hiking was about to become my favorite pastime. I believe my next pair of hiking shoes will be water resistant!

This rock formation is called 'THE PUNCH BOWL'
During my twelve mile hike at Turkey Run, I climbed up and down a lot of wooden and stone stairs. In this photo I am standing in front of one of four LADDERS that needed to be climbed. They were much easier to climb up than to climb down.
This photo does not quite capture how narrow this passage nor how steep the steps were. You will just have to take my word for it.
Covered Bridge that dates back to 1882.
SUGAR CREEK
My twelve mile hike included walking on Trail 3 & 9 which are listed as 'VERY RUGGED' (No argument from me - These trails were not your basic 'Sunday walk in the park.'  I spent nearly five hours at the park and I did not see everything. I will definitely return to this park in the future. There is another park nearby which is said to be just as nice - SHADES STATE PARK.  Surely I will need to check out that park as well..

SATURDAY IS WEIGH DAY.
223.3 lbs
I lost another 1.1 lbs this week.
That was 'easy.'
All I had to do was walk/hike 100 miles!
(Perhaps if I ate a bit less, my success would be more rapid.)  What's the hurry? This is a never-ending marathon.

For the past three months, at the high-water mark of 241.9 lbs right in the middle of my recovery from a hernia, I have consistently been losing weight, virtually every week.

I have always thought that a 'creek' by definition is a minor tiny place where water flows perhaps just a few miles long. My idea of what qualifies as a 'creek' apparently needs to be reassessed.

Sugar Creek is an 82.4-mile-long (132.6 km) tributary of the Driftwood River in east-central Indiana in the United States. Via the Driftwood, White, Wabash and Ohio rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River. Sugar Creek was likely so named from the sugar trees growing along its banks

Sugar Creek is apparently a very popular name. I have hiked near a Sugar Creek in Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. They have nothing in common other than their name.

TURKEY TIME

Some of my more regular readers of this blog over the past year will remember that as I advanced on my journey on the way to my 100 lb weight loss, I periodically posted photos of myself holding turkeys to highlight my progress.   When I had lost approximately 20 lbs, I posted a photo of myself holding one turkey.  When I had lost approximately 40 lbs, I posted a photo of myself holding two turkeys.  And so on...

Fast forward to now.  I am down 100 lbs.  This achievement cried out for a turkey photo.  This time, I picked up 5 twenty pound turkeys.  CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT THIS WAS THE WEIGHT THAT I WAS CARRYING AROUND MORNING, NOON AND NIGHT, 24/7?  In the photo below it appears that I am struggling.  Appears? Are you kidding? I was struggling!   If I stepped onto my scale holding those FIVE TURKEYS, the needle would have pointed to 309 lbs, just as it did on December 24th, 2014, although on that day it was WITHOUT THE TURKEYS!  (actually just one big fat butterball turkey - me!)  Have I mentioned that I am feeling pretty good these days?  I do not intend to lose any more turkeys.  I do, however,  have plans of dropping a few cornish game hens!

5 TURKEYS=100 POUNDS
100 POUNDS=weight lost since December 24, 2014
It kind of removes the mystery of why I wasn't so active back in those days...
Who would want to do ANYTHING while carting around an extra 100 lbs?
