HAPPY HALLOWEEN

I don't think I did a great job in calorie control during my weekend in Houston for International QuiltMarket. I am resigned to the fact that my weight loss streak may reverse itself for a week. I am also going to make sure that I get back on program and start racking up some successful weeks again. So not matter, how badly my scale might annoy me this Saturday, I am getting back to on track starting today. Happy Halloween.

BACK IN PLAY

When I started my new lifestyle change on December 24th, 2014 my original goal was to lose 100+ pounds.  Right 'out of the gate' in the first four months, I lost 95 pounds.  I hit a low of 213.9 on April 18th.  Once, I got down to that weight, I was slowly adding ounces and pounds so that by September 3rd  (coincidentally the day I purchased my fitbit) I had reached 226.9 lbs.  Now, even at 226.9 lbs, I was down 82 lbs which is quite significant.  The fitbit reversed the course of this slow march up the weight ladder. Since September 3rd, I have now returned within one pound of that low weight of 213.9.   This means that I am soon to break through a barrier and get to a new low.  On Saturday, I checked in at  214.8.   In other words, I am just 6 lbs away from entering the 100 pound club.  The original goal of 100+ pound weight loss is 'back in play'.

YOSEMITE PARK WEATHER

Exactly three weeks from now, 21 days to be exact...I will be in a van with 6 other guys headed to Yosemite Park in preparation for the climb up Half Dome.  A few months ago I was concerned that my physical condition was peaking.  I am sure that my conditioning has improved much over the past few weeks.  My plan is to start 'relaxing' my physical output as the October 1st hiking date approaches.  My current thinking is that once I get to within a week or ten days of the actual climb that I need to start ratcheting down my workouts.   During that last week or so will be no time to take 30 mile bike rides or spend three hours on an elliptical machine.   It is never a good time for an injury and now would be a particularly bad time - so I need to be extra careful.

It is now time to start thinking about the weather that we might be facing on October 1.

As I review this chart it appears that it might be quite cold in the early morning hours when our hike begins.   As the temperature is likely to rise to the high sixties or low seventies, it appears that we will not be too cold during the day.   The very fact that I am reviewing this information and thinking about the weather in Yosemite Park continues to confirm that the day of the hike is looming ever closer.   I am looking forward to it!

FITBIT

Earlier this year I had thought that I would have been interested in the Apple Watch to sync with my workouts.  When the watch was finally revealed, I was underwhelmed by what it could do and overwhelmed by its high cost.  I declined to get involved with this product.

Yesterday, however, I did add an electronic device to my life - FITBIT.  Specifically FITBIT ONE.

I made my purchase in Wisconsin on the way home and managed to save a full 5% on sales tax.   On the way home, I stopped at a Starbucks to get it up and running and synced to my MacBook Air and iPhone.  As simple as it was, I was still confused and needed to call customer support for help.   Something amazing happened.  I was talking to a live person within 30 seconds.  That alone, makes me a very enthusiastic fan of this device.

fitbit day 1:

My fitbit was recording 'phantom' steps and 'phantom' stair climbing while I was cruising down the highway after I set it up.   Once I noticed this, I turned it off.  I need to investigate why this was happening.

Once I arrived at the YMCA for my two hour and five minute workout on the elliptical I turned it back on and it recorded more than 13,000 steps. I bought this device fully aware that it will be addicting.  This little wonder will definitely be accompanying me to Half-Dome at Yosemite National Park - now only 27 days away!
