AppleCare

Today, I provide a public service, particularly on the eve of the introduction of the brand-new iPhone7 and iPhone 7+.  Here is the advice: Get AppleCare.

AppleCare+ for iPhone
Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone(1) and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $29 for screen damage, or $99 for any other damage, plus applicable tax.(2) In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone through getsupport.apple.com.
I own an iPhone6. I have owned this device for 22 months. Approximately 6 months ago, I cracked my screen and under the AppleCare that I had paid for at purchase, the phone was quickly fixed for a small service charge.  Two months ago, I dropped my phone again, and cracked the screen again. This time I didn't rush out to the Apple Store to get it fixed. Three days ago, I got myself (and my iPhone) completely submerged briefly in water at Matthiessen State Park while enjoying the waterfall. This was the end of my phone. My AppleCare plan has about 40 days left on it. Last night I was issued a brand-new iPhone6 for a small service charge of only $79.00 (As the retail price of this phone is currently $749.00 this seemed like a good deal).  Everyone gets two shots to have accidental damage covered - I have used up my two times. Now it might be time to be a bit extra careful. The coverage would have expired in about 40 days anyway.  It is always a good decision to add AppleCare to the purchase price of an Apple product.  I used to think that the replacement phones were refurbished.  I learned yesterday that the replacement phones are actually brand-new. This means that my battery is brand-new and that I should be able to enjoy this device for quite some time.

SIX MILLION STEPS

The fitbit counts steps. If the device is being worn, it counts steps. It matters not whether you are aggressively exercising or very passively walking to the refrigerator. Nevertheless, I noticed something this morning.  I have noticed that I am less than 7000 steps away from logging my six millionth step since last September 3 when I purchased my fitbit. This information is likely interesting to only one person in the world. Me. As this is my blog, I decided to document this today. I should reach my ten millionth step sometime later this year. I admit it - I am a fan of dubious achievements.

MID-DAY UPDATE @ 11:00AM local time
As expected, after my morning workout...I surpassed six millions 'lifetime' steps since September 3, 2015

.
It appears that my next milestone on my fitbit will be my 'lifetime' achievement of 'traversing' THREE THOUSAND MILES which I will surely reach within the next three weeks.

GENIUS BAR

Among the many reasons that I like Apple products, is that I really like the convenience of their 'Genius Bar.'   When something about an Apple product goes bad, either a walk-in appointment or an appointment made in advance at the Genius Bar will often get the problem resolved.
If one is lucky, the problem will be resolved without reaching into your wallet.  Today, in the middle of my 10 mile walk, a problem that I have been having with my charging cord, and or rate of battery charging was no longer something I could ignore.  My phone kept on turning off.  It would not charge properly.  I was using a brand-new Apple authorized 'lightning accessory cable' and a Limefuel portable battery which I knew was not the cause of the problem.  So, my ten mile walk had a two hour delay short of completing the 6th mile.  No worries, I ended my 'walk' at 5.5 miles and once my issue at the Lincoln Park Apple Store was resolved I walked an additional 4.5 miles so that my goal of 10 miles was reached.  One convenient thing about living in Chicago is that I am with a short walk of two Apple stores, and thus two Genius Bars. Over the past few years, I have taken advantage of this proximity to the Genius Bar many times.

For dinner, a coupon at Panera Bread was cashed in.  The nearest Panera Bread is about .75 mile from our home.... A roundtrip would have been 1.5 miles.  I preferred to log a two mile walk so I padded the roundtrip walk by taking a route that was less than ideal for someone who might have been in a hurry.

The 'Map My Walk' application that I use to 'map my walks' sent a recap for the month of November.  I logged 43 separate sessions (some could have been as short as only one mile) and walked just under 400 miles in just over 85 hours.

some math.

The month of November had 720 hours (24hours x 30days)
I spent 85 hours logging 'walks' at mostly 4.5 mph.

That is 11.8% of the time in the entire 720 hours of November.
I do not know what exactly this means - surely it means something.
