TOKYO

It is not often that I plug in my fitbit 'dongle' into the mac to view my dashboard. I did last night, as I was curious how many steps and miles I have 'traveled' since I became a 'fitbitter' on September 3, 2015. Now I know. I have logged over 13 million steps and traveled nearly 7000 miles. To be precise, my mileage is 6957.51 miles.  What this means is basically nothing. I was simply curious. Apparently my last lifetime badge is still nearly 1000 miles away. This badge, once earned, is the 'Earth' badge. This is the equivalent distance to the center of the earth. (This would be a very impractical hike.) And that's it... no more fitbit lifetime badges to look forward to after that. Perhaps this will change in the future, surely there are more than a few folks out there that have logged more than 7900 miles and need to be recognized with imaginary badges too. I still have some time to contemplate this as I am still 1000 miles away from this 'achievement.'

The route to Japan shown below which is better suited for airplane travel and would be difficult to duplicate on foot.  Nevertheless, since I started logging fitbit steps on September 3, 2015 - I have logged enough mile to 'walk' to Tokyo, Japan.

Distance from Chicago to Tokyo

Distance is 10161 kilometers or 6314 miles or 5486 nautical miles

The distance is the theoretical air distance (great circle distance). Flying between the two locations' airports can be a different distance, depending on airport location and actual route chosen.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

No, it's not my wedding anniversary...That's still about three weeks away.  No, it's not the anniversary of my decision to change my life and quit the couch potato lifestyle...that's still nearly four months away. No, it's not the anniversary of my climb up to the peak of Half Dome in Yosemite Park...that's still about one month away. It is the anniversary of the day that I turbo-charged the change in my life and purchased my fitbit. During this first year... Sept 2015 through August 2016, I have been counting steps... I am aware that there is about one person on earth who might care about this. That person being me.

In the first year that I had this fitbit, I accumulated 9,012,198 steps.
I had two months when my step count was over one million.
I had one month when my step count was under 200,000.
My average steps for this first year was 24,690 steps per day.
I earned my 'sneakers badge' (10,000 steps) 342 times.
I earned my 'cowboy badge' (50,000 steps) 22 times.
I earned my 'classics badge' (25,000 steps) 171 times.
I failed to earn my 'boat shoe badge' (5000 steps) 23 times.
I earned my 'volcano badge' (500 floors climbed in one day) once, on Half Dome.
I earned my 'genie shoe' badge (75,000 steps) once, the day I walked the Chicago Marathon before taking an additional hike in the evening that same day.

And now...back to our regular programming....

After an appointment in Mishawaka, Indiana, I headed towards Chicago and stopped at Indiana Dunes. As always, I parked my car at the visitors center. This time I was searching for the Little Calumet River Trail which I had not yet hiked on any of my previous visits. At one point, I lost the trail and it was a while before I 'recovered.'  I never worry too much as my MapMyWalk application always tells me where I am and which direction I need to go to get back on track.

END OF THE LINE

Yesterday, I came up with a new idea for my urban hike. I hopped on the 'Red Line' subway train just two blocks from my home and took it to the 'end of the line.'  The last stop is 95th/Dan Ryan. My hike started on the subway platform at 95th Street. I first hiked nearly 5 miles east to get near the lake. (Lake Michigan) From that point I worked my way north, making side trips at the 87th Street Ore Walls, Promontory Point, Whole Foods in Hyde Park, Northerly Island and and a few other minor side trips. By the time I returned home, I had walked 30 miles. This may be a personal record that I don't break for some time. I was so pleased with my progress with my recent weight loss, that my ebullient spirits just seemed to propel me along the way yesterday. I think I took a big step (more like 50,000+ steps) to insure that next week, my weight will fall a bit further. Forecasting weight loss is a useless endeavor, nevertheless, it would be nice if I could get below 220 lbs for the first time since January earlier this year.

Yesterday I took the 'red line' train to 95th Street to begin my urban hike.

87th Street ORE WALLS

This was a part of the Ore Walls that I had never seen before....I felt like I was in an ancient tunnel.
At 11:00AM, Rainbow Beach was not too crowded. Apparently some of the southside beaches are not as popular as the beaches on the northside.
This outdoor art sculpture used to be three blocks from my home. From time to time, the city moves these pieces so that other communities can enjoy them too.
As I approached downtown, it looked like the weather was not going to be too agreeable. However, by the time that I actually arrived downtown, it had mostly cleared up and blue skies took command.
During my hike yesterday, I apparently reached a new 'fitbit' milestone.  I earned the 'NILE BADGE' for  my lifetime (since September 3, 2015) achievement of walking 4132 miles.

There are other subway lines that I can take to 'the end of the line'

I have called the USS STEEL 'ruins' at 87th Street the 87th Street Ore Walls...It's official name is STEELWORKERS PARK.  (This information was lifted from a Chicago Park District website)

In 2002, the Chicago Park District acquired a 16.5-acre site in the South Chicago community to develop a new park. Previously part of the US Steel Complex known as South Works, the site was recently transformed into an attractive landscape with natural areas, trees, walking paths and exquisite views of Lake Michigan. The property is edged by remnant elements of the steel industry, most notably a series of enormous concrete ore walls. Located at the juncture between the Calumet River and Lake Michigan, the South Works first opened in the early 1880s. By this time, the surrounding area had already attracted industrial development because of its location near the river, lake, and substantial railroad service that provided excellent opportunities to transport materials and goods. Swedish, Scottish, and German immigrants had settled in the area, and the growing steel industry attracted even larger numbers of residents to the South Chicago area. In 1901, the US Steel Corporation acquired South Works. At the time, well-paying jobs at the industrial complex attracted Italians, Poles, Mexicans, and African-Americans to make the area their home. At its peak, South Works had more than 20,000 employees. It covered an area of 600 acres, much of which was composed of landfill made of molten slag. After South Works began downsizing in the 1970s, the mill closed down in 1992. The City of Chicago and community organizations are championing ambitious redevelopment plans for the area. Officially named as Steelworkers Park by the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners in 2014, the park provides a first step towards realizing these plans.
.
This was the route of my 'side trip' to STEELWORKERS PARK at 87th Street. This was nearly a two mile detour as I headed north from 95th Street as part of my 30 mile hike on Saturday.

By the time that I finished my 'tour' of Northerly Island, I think I was in my 23rd mile of my 30 mile hike.

SIX MILLION STEPS

The fitbit counts steps. If the device is being worn, it counts steps. It matters not whether you are aggressively exercising or very passively walking to the refrigerator. Nevertheless, I noticed something this morning.  I have noticed that I am less than 7000 steps away from logging my six millionth step since last September 3 when I purchased my fitbit. This information is likely interesting to only one person in the world. Me. As this is my blog, I decided to document this today. I should reach my ten millionth step sometime later this year. I admit it - I am a fan of dubious achievements.

MID-DAY UPDATE @ 11:00AM local time
As expected, after my morning workout...I surpassed six millions 'lifetime' steps since September 3, 2015

.
It appears that my next milestone on my fitbit will be my 'lifetime' achievement of 'traversing' THREE THOUSAND MILES which I will surely reach within the next three weeks.
