MONK FRUIT SWEETENER, SAY WHAT NOW?

Keto Dieters Love This Low-Carb Sugar Substitute—but Is It Worth the Hype?
Monk fruit extract is appealing for three major reasons: It’s unbelievably sweet, won’t raise your blood sugar levels, and has little to no calories in its pure powdered form. Plus, there are no known nasty side effects, and the Food and Drug Administration categorizes monk fruit extract as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS), even if you have diabetes.
“It’s 150 to 200 times sweeter than sugar, so you can use very little,” explains Keri Glassman M.S., R.D.N., founder of Nutritious Life. “It also contains antioxidants and is said to support the immune system, digestive tract, glands, and respiratory system.” One study even suggests monk fruit sweetener might have anti-inflammatory properties.
So How Does Monk Fruit Sweetener Compare to Sugar?
Consuming too much added sugar can ruin your teeth, cause kidney stones, increase your risk of heart disease, harm your liver, and make you gain weight. Monk fruit sweetener has not been proven to do any of these things.
Monk fruit’s sweetness comes from chemicals called mogrosides, which the body processes differently from common sugars like sucrose and fructose.
While monk fruit extract may be a healthier choice compared to sugar and many other artificial sweeteners, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should add it to all of your meals, says Cara Harbstreet, M.S. R.D. L.D., of Street Smart Nutrition. Like anything, moderation is key.
“Monk fruit sweeteners are calorie-free, but that doesn’t mean they can be used with abandon,” says Harbstreet. “From a safety standpoint, there would be no negative physical effects. However, health encompasses our emotional and mental health as well, and low-calorie or calorie-free sweeteners are often associated with dieting behaviors that can damage one’s relationship with food.”
Translation: Adding any kind of sweetener to your food might make you crave sugary things, which can cause a vicious cycle, especially if your goal is weight loss.

VEGETARIAN SALAD - YEAH, I WON'T BE DOING THAT AGAIN

I was a bit experimental on Saturday at Whole Foods - I hand-selected some low calorie vegetarian treats from the self-serve salad bar. Yeah, I won't be doing that again.  Just not that satisfying.

Hi, it's me. I'm back (The Central Scrutinizer, Frank Zappa)

Hi, it's me. I'm back.
You will hear this when listening to 'The Central Scrutinizer' on Joe's Garage album by Frank Zappa.
Well, this is me. And I am, indeed, back.
I have come a long way. again. backwards.

Time to refocus.
So I stepped on my scale today, Saturday, May 25, 2018 and the imaginary needle on the all-digital scale stopped at 279 lbs.

Whoopee, I am still down 30 lbs from where I started December 2013.

Time to get back on track.

HUGE WHOLE FOODS OPENS IN LAKEVIEW

There has been a Whole Foods near the intersection of Ashland and Belmont since 1996. That store closed earlier this week. Not too worry, a new store more than twice its size has just opened across the street on the right on the intersection of Ashland and Belmont. Of course, I checked it out. I was a bit underwhelmed at the design, but it was hard to argue with the size. It appears that the company contacted the same people who place the name 'TRUMP' on his buildings, as the letters identifying this building are indeed huge.

The dark silhouette at the bottom of this photograph is my daughter.

NEWEST CHICAGO WHOLE FOODS STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE

I have a few favorite supermarkets: Hy-Vee, Mariano's, Kroger, Fresh Thyme, and Whole Foods. So many people who I speak to always tell me how difficult it must be for me to eat on the road. It can be difficult. However, during the past 15 months I have discovered that there are plenty of places to make a great salad - and it is these types of markets that offer that option.  The newest Whole Foods that will open some time in 2017 is finally starting to take shape at the triple corners of Ashland/Lincoln/Belmont Avenues in Chicago.  This two story structure will be the second largest Whole Foods in Chicago.  Basically, it is moving across the street from a much smaller store which has been in the neighborhood since 1996.  A few months back this blog posted a photo of the empty lot.  Things are finally starting to take shape (literally).

This is what Chicago's newest Whole Foods looks like now

This is what Chicago's newest Whole Foods will look like in one year

The first time I spoke of this new location was Tuesday, July 7, 2015.  The title of that blog post was:
TWO THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2017.  Aside from looking forward to a new Whole Foods in 2017, I was speaking about how I was looking forward to a new President in 2017 as well. If Donald Trump gets the nomination for the Republican Party - I will no longer be looking forward to the Presidential Election at all. A November general election between two progressive Democrats will not make me very enthusiastic.

I have been talking about it for weeks now... While I have continued to congratulate myself for maintaining a rigorous adherence to a workout schedule - I have definitely 'dropped the ball' when it comes to curbing my appetite.  One problem is that it true that one who works out, increases one's one appetite which can negate the whole point of working out in the first place. But here's the thing.  At one point, I will get it together.... and....

It might be a few days before I get this 'bitmoji' thing out of my system....!

THE LONG SLOW GLIDE

I have experienced a 100 pound weight loss.  It took just under one year.  The odd thing about it is that I went from 309 lbs on December 24th down to 220 lbs on April 11th.

Basically, I lost nearly 90 lbs in less than four months.  The balance of the year was spent, either holding that weight and/or slowly watching my weight creep up.  Once, I became a fitbitter in the beginning of September, I started experiencing success again.  I have said from the very beginning that this journey will never end - and that is even more evident to me now that ever before.  It is just as hard to hold onto weight loss as it is to lose the weight.  It takes just as much effort.  Those last ten pounds were a long slow glide.

Most of my weight loss this past year happened in the first four months.
.
This chart shows only the last six months, At the height of this chart was when I purchased my fitbit.

.
This chart shows the steady progress from the point that I was a fitbitter.

RETURN TO ZIONSVILLE RAIL TRAIL

My attempt to walk along the Zionsville Rail Trail on Tuesday was thwarted by my veering off the trail and walking much of my 10 mile hike off the trail and along the streets of the town.  I arrived at the trail on Tuesday evening very close to dusk and just did not have a plan and I did not know which way to start.  I fixed this with a pre-dawn hike on the very next day, yesterday.  For Wednesday's hike I set my alarm for 5:00AM and I was on the trail (in total darkness) at 6:00AM.  I parked at Zionsville City Hall which was one of the official trailheads.  The trail was paved, it was wide and I started my hike under a blanket of shimmering stars.  My flashlight came in handy as it really was completely dark.  Still, even at that hour I passed a number of people who were jogging, also with flashlights. (headlamps)

It appears that I left the Indianapolis area during a last gasp of unseasonably fall weather.  When I returned from my hike to enjoy my breakfast at the Days Inn, the local television weatherman was speaking of the 1" to 3" snowfall that was expected over the weekend.  A quick check of the forecast for Chicago indicates that we will not be escaping the cold weather or the snow.  Although, today, Friday should be warm enough, the temperatures are going to dip below freezing on Saturday and never rise above freezing on Sunday.  So, a challenge lies before me:  Am I going to continue to get my ten mile walk outdoors?  I expect to do precisely that. Certainly I will try.

After walking off the Zionsville Rail Trail on Tuesday night and veering into the muddy unpaved trail of the Starkey Nature Preserve, this paved trail was a welcome sight.  Especially in the darkness of the pre-dawn hours.  I got a kick out of these signs warning that the wooden planks of the bridge were slippery when wet.  The wet surfaces of the wooden bridges were, in fact, incredibly slippery.

ten mile walking streak reached 11 days
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
so how does one reach 50,000+ steps in one day?  It is 'easy.'   A ten mile walk in the pre-dawn hours will catapult the step count well over 10,000.  When I arrived home from Indiana around 5PM, I examined my caloric intake for the day, and I was 'alarmed.'  One cannot really erase calories, but one can try.  I walked in place for nearly 4 hours.  I was walking in place while on the phone for nearly one hour.  I was walking in place while watching a video of a TV show that I wanted to catch up on.  I was walking in place while I watched the 'live' broadcast of a TV show.  And I was walking in place while I watched the news.  When I passed 50,000 steps for the day, I was satisfied.  Just two hours later, the fitbit mocked me at midnight.  It indicated zero steps.  Just as it does every single day.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
and one final thing...
The MARC JACOBS WEIGHT LOSS JOURNAL blog passed a milestone last evening... It has logged its 25000th visit.  The blog hasn't exactly gone 'viral.'  And the Rabbi Hillel Diet has not become the biggest diet program (philosophy) in the world - but it has helped me.  I am its author and its biggest fan.  I know that it has been instrumental in keeping me on track, and getting me back on track each time I showed signs of derailing.
