SETBACK

Last week the scale shouted back at me that I was 209 lbs.  I should have accused it of lying and moved on.  Perhaps I had exercised late on the previous Friday night and I had not completely rehydrated.  It matters not.  I suspected that it might be a little too good to be true and it was.  So here's the situation, I am apparently not down 100 lbs - I am only down 91 lbs.  And you know what, for all practical purposes - it's the same difference.  All my clothes fit me. Perhaps last week, the scale was showing something artificially low.  Surely this week the scale is showing something artificially high.  Perhaps I had 10,000 mg of salt this week and I am retaining water.  Honestly, I do not know.   I do not think it would have been possible to actually gain 9 lbs in one week if I had gorged myself on an all-you-can-eat cruise.  Maybe my scale is broken.  Maybe I had too much whiskey last evening, and my body has not got itself back into its normal equilibrium. What I do know, is that this 9 pound weight gain is not and can not be real.  Whatever variables are causing it will be wiped clean in a day or two.  That's my story - and I am sticking to it!  I feel great and I am happy about my progress.  The next stop on my journey is to seriously get to 209 lbs and make sure that the reading is legitimate. From there, I can see another 10 lbs need to be shed to just get under 200 lbs.  This is my goal.  This will happen.

Walking has become a method of transportation for me.  I needed to go to the dentist today. In years past, I have either driven or taken the subway.  It had never occurred to me to walk the four miles.  Let me amend that, it had never occurred to me prior to yesterday morning.  I walked to 4.5 miles to the dentist.  Actually, I walked an additional half mile to log an even five miles.  (That is a mathematical oxymoron as five is not an even number, but I am sure you know what I mean)  After my dental work, I walked two miles to a Jason's Deli for lunch.  And after a quick stop at a nearby Whole Foods, I walked another four miles home.  When the day was over, I had logged 11 miles of walking at a very, very brisk pace.  It is so liberating to be able to use my own two feet as a method of transportation.

24 HOUR INJURY

This morning, I have what I hope will be my last visit with my gastroenterologist for a long time.  The search for the cause of the iron deficiency in my blood has been fruitless so far.  I am grateful that nothing has been found - I now believe myself to be in excellent health.  Why shouldn't I think this....in the past few months I have been examined through seemingly every orifice in my body, I have swallowed a camera that took pictures of my digestive system, I have had my blood tested and re-tested, even my stool has been tested and I have had full body cat scan.  (It is the results of the cat scan and stool sample test which will be discussed at my appointment later today)  Since I have NOT received a phone call from my doctor to report for an emergency consultation - I am fairly confident that even this last test will have found nothing significant.

After a two hour workout at the YMCA on Wednesday, I rushed out and drove to the pool where my daughter has been involved in water polo this summer in order to pick her and my wife up to take them home.  By the time I got out of the car, I could not put any weight on my right foot and I was walking with an extreme limp.  It was hard to pinpoint exactly where the pain was coming from and the pain disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.  Yesterday morning, there was still some lingering pain (or discomfort) in my right foot.  It did not prevent me from my 92 minute session on my home elliptical machine.  As the day wore on, the pain disappeared completely.

This is a reminder to myself that I need to be extra careful during the last month prior to my Half Dome Hike.  Half Dome is 2000 miles from my home in Chicago and the reservation (permission) to climb the mountain was secured nearly 6 months ago.  This may not be a one-in-a-lifetime event - but it is certainly rare enough that I would be crushed if I missed the chance due to some freak accident or injury.  Perhaps yesterdays pain was some kind of muscle strain in my foot from removing my sneakers too quickly - or twisting my feet the wrong way when I was putting on my street shoes.   The lesson today:  don't get hurt too close to October 1.  It would be a devastating setback.

I need to avoid injury before October 1

Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California

My Garmin GPS tell me that Half Dome in Yosemite Park is 2013 miles from my home in Chicago.  I know better. As October 1 approaches - Half Dome is getting closer and closer each day!

BACK ON TRACK

Last week I had my first snack when I was bingeing on apples.   This morning, instead of having my regular breakfast I again was bingeing on apples.  That's enough.  An apple a couple of times per week would be fine - but eating 4 of them within an hour or so is simply not a great idea.

For dinner, my family went on a shopping excursion to Mariano's Supermarket and I returned home with scallops and shrimp among a couple of other new treats.  My wife prepared a delicious feast for me - lots of food - great variety - great taste - and low calorie!

I started with my SPINACH SALAD and added to it were 8 cherry tomatoes, hearts of palm, and mushrooms.  In order to give the salad another fresh taste we added some sliced beets.  Even with all these ingredients the entire salad was still only about 90 calories.   My dinner included two cups of MISO SOUP and that is only 90 calories.

I tried something else that looked interesting when I saw it on the supermarket shelf - CRACOVIA CUCUMBER SALAD (imported from Poland)   100 grams of this cucumber salad is a grand total of 10 calories and it was tasty too!

Although I actually enjoy canned asparagus - fresh asparagus is much better.  These are foods that I can enjoy without guilt.

My entre' was a delectable mixture of bay scallops, shrimp and one giant sea scallop.  This type of seafood is low calorie.   My wife prepared it with some garlic seasoning.  The seafood portion of my meal was only 220 calories.

THIS ENTIRE FEAST WAS 459 CALORIES.  My wife worked hard to prepare this meal and it was healthy, delicious and low calorie!   Tomorrow night I will have practically the same meal as only half of what we purchased was consumed - but it has already all been cooked.

AMAZINGLY HEALTHY, BIG, TASTY and LOW CALORIE DINNER - 459 CALORIES!

I have felt a bit down the last two days - I was really ticked off at the unreliability of my scale (or is it the unreliability of my body?) that somehow showed my weight 8 lbs more from one week to the next.  I still cannot explain it.  At least one day later, my weight retreated another two pounds.  So although I have had this setback - and although I have been ticked off - I think I should remember that even after this - MY WEIGHT LOSS SINCE DECEMBER 24th 2014 is 90 pounds.  SOMETHING I SHOULD BE PROUD OF and SOMETHING THAT I AM PROUD OF!

Apple bingeing is no longer on my itinerary - and I am back on track!
