ONE STEP BEYOND

ONE STEP BEYOND was a late 1950's era television show that ran on ABC network from January 1959 until July 1961.  The show was created by Merwin Gerard and produced by Collier Young.  ONE STEP BEYOND was hosted by John Newline, "your guide to the supernatural" (also credited as "Our guide into the world of the unknown")  Newline presented tales that explored paranormal events and various situations that defied "logical" explanation.  The show was somewhat similar to THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Today, at my local YMCA in my hometown, Chicago, I found another STAIRMASTER machine and I definitely took ONE STEP BEYOND.  In fact, I took quite a few steps beyond.   I was eager to build on the successful session that I had on Friday morning.   I guess, my thinking was very similar to the thinking of the programmers of this particular machine as the machine had a choice to choose various landmarks as goals.   (I had thought that this was my own original idea - but I guess that this is one of those ideas that are fairly obvious)

This was the screen on the STAIRMASTER during set/up for the workout
I selected the tallest building which on this scale was the BURJ KHALIFA.  When I reported the various floors in yesterdays blog I was relying on information and counting actual floors within these buildings.   This machine assigned 254 floors to the BURJ KHALIFA based on its height and not actual stairs within.

My first goal was to go at least ONE STEP BEYOND my accomplishment the previous day.
My next goal was to complete 255 floors.  And I did that.
My next goal was to complete 300 floors.  And I did that.
My next goal was to exceed 1000 calories burned for the workout.  And I did that.
My next goal was to complete 400 floors.  And I did that.
My next goal was to simply last on the machine for 90 minutes.  And I did that.
My next goal was to complete 500 floors  And I did that.
My next goal was to simply last on the machine for 120 minutes (TWO HOURS) And I did that.
My final goal was to exceed 2000 calories for the workout.  And I did that.
When the session was over...I had maintained a static pace for the full two hours: 5 floors/minute.
THE COMPLETE SESSION LASTED TWO HOURS, THREE MINUTES, 52 SECONDS.
THE machine reported that I had  'CLIMBED'  630 FLOORS, at an average speed 5 floors/minute...and burned 2028 CALORIES.

HELLO GOD, DON'T YOU FIND IT A LITTLE RIDICULOUS THAT I AM VISITING MY GASTROENTEROLOGIST ON MONDAY TO FIND OUT WHY I AM ANEMIC?   DOES THIS APPEAR TO BE THE ACTIVITY LEVEL OF SOMEONE SUFFERING FROM ANEMIA?  I have never had more energy in my life.  I have never felt stronger in my life.  I have never exercised so regularly or with more determination in my life.  How the heck could I be anemic?

I guess today, it can be said that I was the (STAIR)MASTER OF MY DOMAIN!

YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWEIGH

YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY was one of the songs from the 1976 release from rock superstars, QUEEN.   It comes from their album A Day at the Races.   This was the second consecutive release from QUEEN that took its name from a Marx Bros movie title.   The first was A Night at the Opera.

One thing I know is that if I had tried to spend more than a few minutes on a stairmaster a few months ago - It would have taken my breath away.   And quickly.

Lately, I have been walking up flights of stairs and I was really eager to find a stairmaster machine in order to test my endurance.  During this trip, which found me in 5 different hotels on 5 consecutive nights and working out in 4 different YMCA's in different communities on four consecutive days - I finally found a stairmaster machine in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

It has been nearly a decade since I have stepped onto one of these contraptions.  I felt as if I was ready.  My initial goal was to log a simulated walk of more flights of stairs than I had accomplished a few weeks ago when I was at the Hilton Hotel in Columbus.   Therefore, my first goal was to walk at least 75 'floors.'   Once that was accomplished - my goals kept on moving.  (In football terminololgy: I kept moving the goalposts back)  I imagined that I wanted to walk up more 'floors' than one would find in the Empire State Building.  And I accomplished that.   Then I wanted to walk up more 'floors' than one would have found in the long gone World Trade Center.   And I accomplished that.  Then I wanted to walk up more 'floors' than one would find in the world's current tallest building.  And I accomplished that.  Then I wanted to walk up more 'floors' than one would find in the world's tallest building that is currently under construction.  And I came very close to accomplishing that. (Apparently I would have to scale 253 floors to climb up Kingdom Tower from ground level to top.)  Then I wanted to continue walking until I had 'burned' at least 500 calories.  And I did that.  Finally I realized that I was approaching one full hour on the machine and that became my final goal.  And I accomplished that too!

I lasted one hour.  I walked up 220 'floors' and I burned 607 calories while doing it.   When I stepped off the machine, I would be lying if I didn't experience a short moment when my legs were wobbly - It was very much like the sensation one feels when one steps off a boat onto the dock for the first time after spending time on choppy waters.   In conclusion it can be said that the machine did TAKE MY BREATH AWAY - but that was after a rather vigorous 60 minute workout!

220.0 lbs

I weigh 220.0 lbs.
I gained 1.1 lbs this week.

I lost 89 lbs in 178 days. Today begins Day 179.
I have lost 14 inches from my waist.
I will always be at the beginning of a journey that never ends.
I weigh 220 lbs. (178 days ago I weighed 309 lbs)
I have lost 28.8% of my weight since Dec 24.
Considering how different my calorie count has been - eating much larger portions of still mostly nutritious foods - I am satisfied.  I must consider cutting back just a bit to continue to lose weight.
I have a BMI, body mass index of 29.43 (far away from obesity!)
I had a 42.0 BMI on 12.24.14 just 178 days ago (Class III obesity)

I have six words to describe how I feel right now - (time to get) BACK TO BASICS

...I know how to begin this week... I think it might be time to visit my 'hometown' YMCA.  Maybe they have a stairmaster.  I would like to continue to challenge myself in step climbing.

postscript:  I don't know if I really should 'worry' about training to climb up the 252 floors Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia even once it is completed in 2018.   I really don't think that this is the most hospitable country for Jews to visit.  Or any westerners for that matter.   Maybe I am wrong.  I frequently am.

(MARC) JACOBS LADDER

JACOBS LADDER.  It was 8:00AM yesterday morning, when I stepped into the fitness room at the Columbus North YMCA and I saw this:

This JACOBS LADDER consists of a series of steps that continue on an endless loop as the 'climber' continues to 'climb'.  Naturally, I had to try my namesake piece of exercise equipment.  I lasted all of 3 minutes.  This could be quite an extreme workout if one could actually last for 30 minutes.  In the 180 seconds (3 minutes) that I was able to maintain equilibrium on the machine, I logged 256 feet 'traveled' and burned 50 calories.  Well....the next time I see one of these machines, and I think I might have seen one of these at my hometown Chicago YMCA, I am going to try to go a bit longer.  After I finished my three minutes I climbed back aboard for some photos....

This YMCA had my new favorite piece of equipment which is the PRECOR 576i CROSS TRAINER for my regular 35 minutes workout.

Until this morning, I had a far different idea regarding what a Jacob's Ladder was...
Here is the definition of a Jacob's Ladder taken directly from wikipedia.com
Jacob's ladder is a folk toy consisting of blocks of wood held together by strings orribbons. The Jacob's Ladder folk toy, also known as 'tumbling blocks' dates back to the Pilgrim times in America. When the ladder is held at one end, blocks appear to cascade down the strings. However, this effect is a visual illusion which is the result of one block after another flipping over. Its name Jacob's Ladder comes from the biblical ladder to heaven, mentioned in Genesis 28:12. Because of the Biblical reference, Puritan children were allowed to use the Jacob's Ladder as a Sunday toy.
The earliest known review of the Jacob's Ladder is an 1889 Scientific American article which tells how it is built and works.  Despite the urban myths prevalent on the internet, there is no known documentation dating it toTutankhamun's tomb or ancient Egypt or to the Pilgrims. It has been theorized that its origin is from a Chinese falling-block toy, called "Chinese blocks".
The Japanese polymath Hiraga Gennai (1729–1779) constructed a Jacob's ladder which later came to be called "Gennai's Wondrous Click-clack" (Gennai no fushigina katakata, 源内の不思議なカタカタ).

PRECOR EFX 576i CROSS TRAINER

I has a particularly good workout at the YMCA yesterday.  I stepped onto a machine that I have used before - what has changed - is my comfort with these machines and learning how to program my workouts for maximum benefit.  The machine I used yesterday was the PRECOR EFX 576i CROSS TRAINER.

Equipment Features

CrossRamp® Technology With Precor patented adjustable CrossRamp® technology, you can alter the height of the elliptical path your foot travels. Called Variable Stride Geometry™, this allows you to focus on a specific muscle group or all major lower-body muscle groups, so you can work the muscles you want, when you want.

Ramp Angle 20°
Biomechanics The patented low-impact EFX® motion is smooth and natural, providing the lowest Rate of Perceived Exertion of any cardio exercise system to make your workouts more comfortable, even though you are working out strenuously. The patented motion allows your heels to remain in contact with foot pedals, reducing muscle and tendon stress.

Resistance Levels 20

I set the ramp angle to 20° and I set the 'resistance' to 20.  I planned on a 30 minute session - and although I was struggling, I did find myself in a groove and continued for a whole 60 minutes.  With the settings sent to 'manual' and the the highest angle and resistance selected I was apparently working on a lot of different muscle groups, that is, according to the display screen.

FALL OFF THE WAGON

My rituals were ripped apart on Monday.  I ate too much.  Then I compounded that failure as I  did NOT work out.  In short, it was a day I would like to forget.  But, hey, I am human.  I guess I fell off the wagon.

fall off the wagon

1. in. to resume drinking after having stopped. (The wagon is presumed to be the water wagon.) It looks to me like he wanted nothing more than to fall off the wagon.
2. in. to resume any previously stopped behavior including smoking, drug use, overeating, or any other disavowed behavior. He’s back to watching TV again. Fell off the wagon I guess.

MONDAY: I fell off the wagon
TUESDAY: I GOT RIGHT BACK ON IT

So, what does one do when one falls off the wagon?  The same thing one does when one falls off the horse.   YOU GET BACK ON.

On Tuesday, I resumed a more normal day of eating.  I resumed my daily workout.  Tuesday started at 6AM with a trip to a local YMCA in Chillicothe, Ohio.  I was looking to try a STAIRMASTER.  This YMCA did not have such a machine - but they did have the same machine which afforded me such vigorous workouts a few weeks ago when I was staying at a Columbus, Ohio Hilton Hotel - PRECOR ADAPTIVE MOTION TRAINER.  (PRECOR AMT)   This machine appears to be something that is neither elliptical nor stairmaster - but some kind of hybrid of the two.

So, the good news is... I am back on the wagon.

BAD DAY IN A GOOD YEAR

It has been a good year.  Since December 24th, 2014 I have lost 90 lbs.
Yesterday was a bad day.
I let my overeating habits overtake me.
When I finally arrived my hotel in Chillicothe, Ohio prepared to visit the YMCA it was too late as this local spot closes at 9PM on weekdays.
OK, that's it... I dont want to talk about it...

STEP JOCKEY

I recently discovered STEP JOCKEY.  This is the mission statement of STEP JOCKEY taken directly from their website.
Labelling the world for calorie burn
Foods are labelled with calorie information so we know what we’re consuming. StepJockey is about the other side of the equation; labelling the physical world for calorie burn to promote health and wellness.
We aim to label and 'gamify' the world for health - starting with stairs.
StepJockey's evaluation and initial launch was seed-funded by UK Department of Health. We are private company with a social mission.

I found this Step Jockey list of the benefits of stair climbing interesting.... NOT SURE HOW USEFULL #13 IS GOING TO BE FOR ME..
Is this a real photograph or some crazy PHOTOSHOPPED concoction?  (See below for your answer)
  1. Stair climbing is officially classed as a ‘vigorous exercise’ and burns more calories per minute than jogging.
  2. Stair climbing requires 8-9 times more energy expenditure than sitting and burns about 7 times more calories than taking a lift.
  3. You burn about 0.17 calories for every step you climb, so you burn roughly a calorie and a half for every 10 upward steps.
  4. You also burn calories going down. Every stair descended burns about 0.05 calories, so you burn 1 calorie for every 20 steps down.
  5. For buildings with five floors or less, it’s nearly always quicker to take the stairs. Studies show office workers save up to 15 minutes a day by taking the stairs.
  6. As well as guarding against heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some cancers, stair climbing releases endorphins that produce feelings of wellbeing.
  7. Just 7 minutes stair climbing a day has been estimated to more than half the risk of a heart attack over 10 years.
  8. Stair climbing cuts carbon emissions. By ditching the lift in a typical office you will save between 0.3 and 0.6 Kg of Co2 a day.
  9. Professional skiers often climb stairs to keep competition-fit. Many models do the same to keep their legs toned for the catwalk.
  10. Climbing stairs is a classic ‘short burst’ exercise and ideal for the time-poor.
  11. The biggest variable in stair climbing is your weight. The heavier you are, the more calories you burn.
  12. Other variables affecting calorie burn while stair climbing include the angle of the stairs, your sex, climbing speed, age and general fitness.
  13. You burn more calories climbing stairs in high heels.
  14. It’s a myth that climbing stairs two at a time burns more calories. More energy is expended over time by taking things slowly.
  15. The greatest height reached climbing stairs in 12 hours was 33,000 feet by Chris Solarz of Philadelphia, USA. Solarz climbed 58,080 stairs.
  16. The 19th century is regarded by many as the golden era of stair construction. In the 20th century architects gave prominence to lifts. Now, with the emergence of ‘active design’, architects are once again making stairs more prominent.
  17. Many scientific studies show that simple stair prompts significantly increase stair usage. One trick is simply to point-out ‘hidden’ stairs
  18. The longest stairway listed by the Guiness Book of Records is the service stairway for the Niesenbahn funicular railway near Spiez, Switzerland. It has 11,674 steps and a round trip would burn over 3,000 calories.
  19. Going down stairs burns fewer calories but works and tones different muscles and joints. It’s also good for balance and coordination.
  20. The Roman architect Vitruvius established the first guidelines for the stair in the first century B.C, suggesting a 37 degree pitch. Most stairs are not dramatically different today.

Crouching Tiger and Turtle, Magic Mountain (to give it its full name) is a work by sculptors Ulrich Genth and Heike Mutter. Visitors are encouraged to follow the twists and turns of the roller coaster and enjoy the surrounding Ruhr landscape from slightly different perspectives than usual!
