PASSOVER

from wikipedia...
Passover or Pesach (from Hebrew פֶּסַח‎ Pesah, PesakhAssyrian; ܦܸܨܚܵܐ "piskha"), is an important, biblically derived Jewish holiday. The Jewish people celebrate Passover as a commemoration of their liberation by God from slavery in Egypt and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses. It commemorates the story of the Exodus as described in the Hebrew Bible especially in the Book of Exodus, in which the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt.
.
Passover will begin tonight. To everyone who celebrates...  May you have a meaningful holiday.

CHANUKAH

Chanukah / חנוכה
Hanukkah (Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה, usually spelled חנוכה pronounced [χanuˈka] in Modern Hebrew, also romanized as Chanukah or Chanuka), also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.
Chanukah begins at sundown on Sat, 24 December 2016.

Rededication. Am I ever in need of a rededication! This morning I weighed myself and I have reached 239.3 lbs. I was just weighed two days ago in the doctor's office and they noted my weight as 234.3 lbs. This does not mean that I gained five pounds in two days. It does mean that my scale is imperfect. However, by using the same scale to mark my progress (or lack of progress) I can still get a good idea of my success (or lack of success) in managing my weight. I am in need of a rededication to progress. Especially today, December 24th, 2016.  THIS IS THE DAY, EXACTLY TWO YEARS AGO, when this whole weight loss and weight loss management began. Two days later, on December 26, 2014 I started this blog.  I remind myself today, for not the first time, that just because I do not enter a food, cake or sweet into my daily food journal does not mean that it didn't happen. I am pretty good about not failing to record my daily exercise, but I am definitely more imprecise when it comes to logging all my foods. I need to find the person that I was two years ago and re-summon the willpower to be successful once again.  I have heard that today is Christmas Eve too.  So to everyone and anyone who is reading this today - Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah!

The first 1.5 miles of this walk was with my daughter, as I escorted her to a spot where she was meeting some friends. All I had to do was promise to keep out of sight once we neared the rendezvous point.  What teenage girl wants to be seen with her dad when she is meeting up with her friends?  Perhaps there are such girls, my daughter is not one of them.

CHAI

Definition:Chai (חי) is a Hebrew word and symbol that means “life.” It is spelled with the Hebrew letters Het (ח) and Yud (י). Jews will often wear a Chai on a necklace, sometimes with a Star of David or Hamsa.
Chai is pronounced as if you were saying “hi” in English.
The Symbolic Meaning of Chai
Judaism is a religion that emphasizes the importance of life. Jews are encouraged to be good, ethical people (mensches) and enjoy the time they are given on Earth. A common Jewish toast is “l’chaim!,” which means, “to life!.” It is said at celebrations in anticipation of all the good things to come. Because it means “life,” the Chai is consequently a symbol that captures an important aspect of Judaism. According to the gematria, which is a mystical tradition that assigns a numerological value to Hebrew letters, the letters Het (ח) and Yud (י) add up to the number 18. The Het has a value of 8 and the yud has a value of 10. As a result, 18 is a popular number that represents good luck. At weddings, bar mitzvahs and other events Jews often give gifts of money in multiples of 18, symbolically giving the recipient the gift of “life” or luck.

My day started with a 10 mile hike in the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve which is part of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District. My initial visit here was back in November. The first 6 miles of my hike were spent crisscrossing across various trails and the final 4 miles of my hike was spent walking along county roads. By 9:00AM, I was back in my hotel room ready to start my day, with 17,000 steps 'banked' according to my fitbit.

.
After a one hour drive back to my hotel in Champaign from Mt Zion, I quickly changed and set out for an evening walk. I had more or less mapped out a course and when I arrived back at my hotel, I had logged an additional eight miles.

.
I took this photo of myself overlooking Interstate Highway 57, I was within a half mile of my hotel during my second hike of the day..

and finally... a discussion about my lunch... My 'lunch' yesterday was really my second breakfast. The first breakfast was at 6AM. After I walked 10 miles, I was feeling a bit hungry. So my second breakfast, was consumed around 10AM. I chose to consider it lunch. I know that I did not have to have four peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. I had intended to have two and perhaps save the other two for a snack later in the day. But before you judge me...Ask yourself: DID YOU WALK 18 MILES YESTERDAY? Still, I know that I should not have had four sandwiches.  But you know what?  I was hungry.
