SPOCK, UHURA and ME

It was hard for me to believe that on Friday I took an 18 mile urban hike. I woke up on Saturday with a terrible cold, a bit of a sore throat and intermittent chills. I rested all morning and in the afternoon I joined my family for a slow walk downtown. While we were at Macy's we discovered 'Mr Spock' and 'Lieutenant Uhura' promoting new Star Trek branded makeup from MAC. As you can imagine, this called for a photo.  I declined any opportunity for a complete makeover.

THE NEEDS OF THE MANY OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE FEW

Yesterday I started a rant about the ridiculousness of the United States Federal Government injecting itself into our lives yet again, by announcing that the gender of visitors to either of the two available public restrooms in federal buildings may be somewhat flexible. In the 'old days' (you remember them, last month) men were assigned to the mens room and women were assigned to the ladies room.  This apparently has inflicted on the civil rights of transgender individuals. This is a classic case of a  solution in search of a problem. For example, let's imagine a man (and there certainly are some) who can effectively dress like women so that no one can really tell without a close personal inspection that they are truly male. What really is the problem?  I assume that people like this have been using the ladies room already and probably without causing a stir. I have found multiple sources that estimate that there might be .03% transgender individuals in America.  For this tiny fraction of people, all the rest of us must bend to their will?  Two days ago I used a 'Star Trek' reference to make a point - and I will again today. Who can question the the wisdom of the logic of Mr. Spock?

The overwhelming majority of Americans found our restroom and locker room policies more than adequate since forever. One thing that progressive liberals enjoy is the fundamental change of the United States of America.  Our President promised this before his inauguration - and sadly - he has certainly delivered.

No more rants for a while.  I am now on my way to Salt Lake City for International QuiltMarket.  I am  in the middle of the third and final week of my recovery from surgery.  It is time to focus on eating right, exercising effectively and working...

COLONOSCOPY

Hi, it's me...I'm back.  The endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures were scheduled for 8AM and I was instructed to arrive one hour early. As I was anesthetized I have no memory of the procedure.  I do know that I started getting hungry last evening, and I was hungry when I woke up this morning. So, I headed to Mariano's Market for a BIG DELICIOUS SPINACH SALAD with a myriad of toppings after my release from the hospital at 10:00AM.

I was not looking forward to this procedure, but I didn't go 'kicking and screaming'
INITIAL COLONOSCOPY RESULTS:

Although I left the hospital with two sheets of paper regarding the colonoscopy and endoscopy results, they don't mean much too me.  A 5mm polyp was found which I am led to understand is in itself not a gigantic issue. Some diverticula was found, and this too, is not a major issue as best I understand at this time.  And finally, the report indicated that my terminal ileum appeared normal (and I am writing this sentence having no idea what that is - I will look it up later.)

The initial endoscopy report noted a small hernia.  (Again, until I speak with my doctor, I don't know what to make of this)  The doctor found evidence that I might have 'Barrett's esophagus.' The report also noted that my stomach and duodenum were normal.  Obviously I need to speak with my doctor to find out what any of this really means.

Following the protocols for preparing for a colonoscopy certainly agree with someone who is trying to lose weight.  Nevertheless, I do not recommend it.

LEGO

When I returned home from my trip to the U.P. (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) last week, my 13 year old daughter, Sara, showed me something that she had created out of Lego pieces.  A man on a treadmill.  I thought that this was a very imaginative thing to do.   I asked my daughter if she could make an elliptical machine - but I don't really think that she owns appropriate Lego pieces to easily make that happen.

While we are on the subject of Lego, let me share with you something my daughter gave me for Father's Day in 2013 - her version of Star Trek's Starship Enterprise and Mr. Spock.

And finally, in July 2013, my daughter who was only 11 years old at the time made my favorite radio talk show host and author - Dennis Prager.

I really enjoy the 'payoff' after working out on the Chicago YMCA elliptical machine.
It is rewarding to get this screen announcing that the workout is complete with statistics.
I did increase my workout by just five minutes from the day before.

and finally, back to LEGO for a moment... I want you to know that the various LEGO creations that I displayed above are all cherished by me as they were made from the imagination of my creative daughter, Sara.   I think the next thing I will ask my daughter to make will be YANKEE STADIUM. How hard can it be?
