WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE

Tomorrow, I board a plane for Salt Lake City. I have been reading about some nightmarishly long security lines at the Chicago airports in the past couple of weeks. I hope that I can manage to avoid any problems during my travels. There is nothing particularly unusual about a trip to Salt Lake City - so, today I thought I would speak of a a different kind of journey: where no man has gone before

Fifty years ago, we imagined a future where we would 'explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly go where no man has gone before.' Fifty years later, the U.S. Justice Department has decreed that we can realize this dream - we can now go where no man has gone before. Isn't progress wonderful?

Is it just me? Or does it seem to you as well that our government has found a solution to a problem that didn't exist?

This week’s announcement that Chicago Public Schools will allow students, staff, and parents to use whichever bathroom matches their gender identity was met with cheers from LGBT-advocacy groups. But while similar announcements have drawn the ire of conservative groups, there has been minimal backlash in Chicago, the country’s third-largest school district.

I suppose it is very impressive that CPS (Chicago Public Schools) is taking the lead and showing the country the proper way to run a school. Perhaps if these same schools were leaders in Reading, Math and Science scores we could take them a bit more seriously. Obviously it was the lack of access to the proper bathroom that has caused the test scores of Chicago students to be among the lowest in the country. Thank goodness, that this problem is now solved!

The solution to this latest controversy can be resolved so easily. One law that strips the 'immorality' and the 'dehumanizing' labels for bathrooms. It is so quaint to have restrooms labels based on gender. It is a throwback to the 1800's, back to a time when indoor plumbing first arrived. I doubt outhouses were labeled in this fashion. The solution is so simple. Restrooms should be labeled like this: RESTROOM. We don't seem to require that there be separate men's and women's elevators.  We don't seem to require that there be separate men's and women's water fountains. 'Obviously' it is unconstitutional and immoral to have men's and women's restrooms. And while we're at it... It might be time to get rid of those antiquated men's and women's dressing rooms at department stores. C'mon folks it's the 21st Century - let's get out of the dark ages.

RED ALERT

This week the plan is simple.  Do not gain any weight.  Not a pound.  Not an ounce.  This is going to be a good week.  I will be traveling to Traverse City, Michigan for a quick three day visit and then zipping south to visit an important fabric customer closer to home back in Illinois.  I have learned that in Traverse City there is a brand-new YMCA that just opened this past September - so that is something to look forward to as well.

Regarding my current condition... I have sounded the red alert(s)

Yesterday, my caloric consumption was much reduced compared to where it has recently been.   I need to reverse the course of my recent weight gains.  Yesterday, was my first effort to cut back from the higher calorie days that I have been getting re-accustomed to.  It is time to un-accustom myself!

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE

In STAR TREK, The BORG never tire of advising the crew of the USS ENTERPRISE that RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.  Unfortunately for The BORG saying it over and over again does not make it true.  The good guys always resist and they always defeat The BORG.

RESISTANCE is certainly NOT FUTILE when stepping onto a piece of exercise equipment.   After my marathon 124 minute session on the STAIRMASTER on Saturday I thought that a modest 32 minute session on an elliptical machine would be perfect.  I set the 'RESISTANCE' to maximum, that is 'level 20.'    I needed to work harder than ever before on the elliptical - but when my 32 minutes were completed, it was very clear that my efforts paid off.   The machine recorded a caloric burn of 760.   That is quite a high number for a mere 32 minute workout.  I could barely have imagined completing 32 minutes at LEVEL 20, a couple of months ago. (or even 10 minutes)

RESISTANCE IS DEFINITELY NOT FUTILE.

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE?

My five day, four night tour of the Kansas City area ended yesterday.   I left Independence, Missouri at 11:30AM after a particularly good early morning appointment.   I was in a hurry to arrive home so that I might possibly meet my family at the Pediatrician as my daughter was suffering from a virus.  I knew I would not have time for lunch, so I departed Independence with two bananas and two apples.   That was my lunch.  (Not quite as satisfactory as lunch at Jason's Deli or Panera Bread) I drove 500 miles for 8 hours straight  with only three extremely short breaks.    I met my family at the doctor and finally arrived home in Chicago at 8:00PM.   Admittedly I was hungry.  Nevertheless, the very first thing I did was spend twenty minutes on my home elliptical machine. Now I have a baseline for what I can and cannot do with this type of exercise.   On my home machine I set the 'resistance' to '10.' (This was a low level.)   I struggled yet still managed to complete a twenty minute segment.   The machine indicated that I 'burned' 275 calories.   My heart rate at the conclusion was 150 BPM.   Had I set the 'resistance' any higher it would have been futile - I was struggling enough as it was.

Thursday marked the 21st consecutive day that I have managed to consume less than 1000 calories.  I continue to surprise myself.   This is the same guy who one month ago was eating and snacking virtually 24 hours per day. (Only sleep kept me from eating.)   For the past three weeks I have not had a snack.   There have been times when I was hungry - but my willpower to train myself to eat only breakfast, lunch and dinner was stronger than my desire to eat something. My resistance has not been futile.   I guess resistance is futile only applies if confronted by The Borg.  Perhaps that is not quite true. Didn't Captain Picard mustered just enough resistance to help the good folks of the U.S.S. Enterprise?

This morning, I resisted the urge to step onto my scale.  I am simply going to wait until tomorrow morning.   It was almost futile to resist the urge to weigh myself today - but I managed.

This afternoon I have gum surgery scheduled.   I am looking forward to answering a question that is always asked when I go to the dentist.  "Are there any changes in your medical condition since your last visit?"   My answer this time will finally be emphatically, "Yes."   I have gotten healthier.   In fact, I am eager to have my blood pressure checked this afternoon as I will be able to see if there has been any improvement from past readings, and especially the reading that I had during my 'wellness' exam way, way back on  December 24, 2014.

The BORG were wrong.  RESISTANCE IS NOT FUTILE.
