WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE

Tomorrow, I board a plane for Salt Lake City. I have been reading about some nightmarishly long security lines at the Chicago airports in the past couple of weeks. I hope that I can manage to avoid any problems during my travels. There is nothing particularly unusual about a trip to Salt Lake City - so, today I thought I would speak of a a different kind of journey: where no man has gone before

Fifty years ago, we imagined a future where we would 'explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly go where no man has gone before.' Fifty years later, the U.S. Justice Department has decreed that we can realize this dream - we can now go where no man has gone before. Isn't progress wonderful?

Is it just me? Or does it seem to you as well that our government has found a solution to a problem that didn't exist?

This week’s announcement that Chicago Public Schools will allow students, staff, and parents to use whichever bathroom matches their gender identity was met with cheers from LGBT-advocacy groups. But while similar announcements have drawn the ire of conservative groups, there has been minimal backlash in Chicago, the country’s third-largest school district.

I suppose it is very impressive that CPS (Chicago Public Schools) is taking the lead and showing the country the proper way to run a school. Perhaps if these same schools were leaders in Reading, Math and Science scores we could take them a bit more seriously. Obviously it was the lack of access to the proper bathroom that has caused the test scores of Chicago students to be among the lowest in the country. Thank goodness, that this problem is now solved!

The solution to this latest controversy can be resolved so easily. One law that strips the 'immorality' and the 'dehumanizing' labels for bathrooms. It is so quaint to have restrooms labels based on gender. It is a throwback to the 1800's, back to a time when indoor plumbing first arrived. I doubt outhouses were labeled in this fashion. The solution is so simple. Restrooms should be labeled like this: RESTROOM. We don't seem to require that there be separate men's and women's elevators.  We don't seem to require that there be separate men's and women's water fountains. 'Obviously' it is unconstitutional and immoral to have men's and women's restrooms. And while we're at it... It might be time to get rid of those antiquated men's and women's dressing rooms at department stores. C'mon folks it's the 21st Century - let's get out of the dark ages.
