YOU ARE HERE (NOW)

My day started in a Cincinnati suburb. Once I finished with my customer in the early afternoon, I drove up to Columbus to be in place for a Tuesday morning appointment. I arrived in town in the late afternoon, and I completed a fairly vigorous eighteen mile hike that ended long after darkness had set in. I had troubles with both of my external light sources. My flashlight was inexplicably not working and my headlamp had a screw loose (much like its owner) and the lamp was not affixed to the straps properly. The light from my phone lit the way in places without street lights. It was nearly 10PM when I returned to my room to finally kick off my shoes and enjoy the sense of accomplishment of an eighteen mile urban hike. 
I found this pointless 'YOU ARE HERE (NOW)' pin painted under a bridge along my trail in Columbus. There was no map, or any other markings to tell someone where 'here' was. But it was true, when I stood by the sign, I was there (then).

BUFFALO BAYOU PARK

Thursday night, my first night in Houston, Texas ended in burst of 'hard-drinking.'  I was brought up in a home by two loving parents that taught me that if you are going to do something, you should do it right. I am guessing that this applies to drinking too. The fact is, anyone can drink.  Anyone can drink too much. But if one can drink all night and still get up before dawn and and take a ten mile urban hike - then definitionally, one did not drink too much. On Thursday, I had hike along some of the pathways at Buffalo Bayou Park and realized that there was much more than I had seen. Friday morning, I set out to explore the entire park from its west end to its east end. And when that hike was completed, I had hike ten miles, and there was time to shower up and meet my colleagues for breakfast.  It is an amazing thing to sit down for a hearty breakfast with 20,000 steps already logged for the day.














Friday was set-up day for the QuiltMarket Show in Houston. As I walked back to my hotel after meeting with my vendors I passed this giant football which has been strategically placed to remind Houstonians that they will be hosting the SUPER BOWL in 100 days.


Thinking about the Super Bowl reminds me that the Cubs are currently playing in the WORLD SERIES.  The Cubs hosted the Cleveland Indians last evening at Wrigley Field and as they will for the next two nights.  They lost the game one to nothing. Unless the Indians 'sweep'  the three Wrigley Field games, the World Series will travel eastward again back to Cleveland to crown its champion.

GOOSE ISLAND

Goose Island is the only island within Chicago. One will never see a sign welcoming you to the island or a sign thanking you for visiting and asking you to visit again. It seems to only be identified on Chicago maps. There are no residential units on this island. The theme of my urban hike today was to walk every street, every nook and cranny that was not private property on Goose Island. Once I finished that, which was about five miles, I circumnavigated the island as best I could. My hike ended up back on Lake Michigan. When I was done, I had logged fifteen miles. 


Fifteen Mile Urban Hike which focused on 'exploring' Goose Island.

This shows that I walked every street possible in Goose Island and that I took a hike around the island as well.
It was a 'grey' day in Chicago and this black and white photograph captured the mood better than a full color photo.

Goose Island is the only island on the Chicago River in Illinois. It is an artificial island, formed by the North Branch of the Chicago River on the west and the North Branch Canal on the east. It covers 160 acres (0.65 km2), and is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and 0.5 miles (0.80 km) across at its widest point.

The land that was to become the present-day Goose Island lies on a bend in the Chicago River between North Avenue on the north and Chicago Avenue on the south. In 1853 William B. Ogden, who had been Chicago's first mayor, formed the Chicago Land Company, which purchased land on the east side of the river to excavate clay for brick-making. Starting from the south, workers excavated a channel northwards, and by 1857 the channel had rejoined the river forming a shortcut past the bend in the river. The channel was eventually dredged to 50 feet (15 m) wide and 10 feet (3.0 m) deep to make it navigable, and it became known as the North Branch Canal, or Ogden's Canal. The island thus created was also sometimes nicknamed Ogden's Island, a name that some Chicago aldermen proposed to make the official name of the island in 1891.

PIGEON CREEK GREENWAY PASSAGE TRAIL

Yesterday was a day to keep moving.
I woke up in Effingham, Illinois, and drove to Shelbyville, Illinois for my first appointment.
Afterwards I had to keep moving.
I left Shelbyville and drove across the state border to Evansville, Indiana for my afternoon appointment.
Afterwards I had to keep moving.
I drove to the Evansville waterfront on the Ohio River to hike the Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage Trail. The trail was six miles from start to end, my return trip along Evansville neightborhood streets made the hike eleven miles.
Afterwards I had to keep moving.
I drove back to my hotel, quickly showered and at 10:35PM I walked across the street to a movie theater to watch Star Trek Beyond.
The showtime was listed as 10:45PM, the movie started precisely at 11:00PM, I was back in my hotel by 12:59AM.
This was the part of my day I could have skipped.
I am an enthusiastic fan of Star Trek.
I have very little enthusiasm for this movie.
The best part about this movie experience was that the price of the ticket was only $6.25 (senior discount)
Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage
The Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage is a planned walking/jogging/biking trail along the Pigeon Creek and the Ohio Riverfront. 
A new favorite sign. How many thrill seekers or folks with suicidal tendencies have been stopped by reading this sign? I have been on many bridges, and this is the first time that I have spotted such a warning.
