HAIRCUT

Considering how bald I am, it seems ridiculous that I still need to get haircuts. (Apparently 'ear' hair  helps keep barbers in business.) I have tradeshow coming up in two weeks, so I determined that I should be properly groomed. There are ways of getting a haircut without walking ten miles, but these days, ten mile walks suit me just fine. The shortest haircut I had ever gotten prior to yesterday was a 'number 1.' (1 mm)  Yesterday I opted for a .5mm haircut.  I have never shaved my head, I guess a .5mm haircut is about as close as one can get to a shaved head without a shaved head. This was my reaction, when I saw what I looked like...


Just kidding... Actually, I admit I quite like the way I look with this ridiculously short 'hair'







There may come a time when I need to go to my daughter's high school for a meeting, like I did last night, with the temperature hovering around 8°F.  If it were that cold, I would probably leave the meeting and race home the full 7/10th of mile seeking warmth. That night was not last night. Last night I attended a Booster Meeting for the Sports Programs, and the temperature at the conclusion of this October 17th night time meeting was shockingly summertime tropical 80°F.  I did walk home, but I extended this walk into an seven mile nighttime urban hike.

Really, what is my problem?  I know I ate too much this week. A little too much in the cookie department,  a bit too much on the chocolate.  I think I may have 'forgotten' to enter everything consumed into my daily food log... But still.... 219.7 lbs?  Is my weight so tentative that the slightest deviation sends it spiraling up?  Answer: Apparently is yes.  So what to do?  Do better this week and every week following.


Friday was the second game that my daughter was cheerleading for the Payton Grizzlies. It was the first time that she was in uniform. Once again the game was played at a 'local' high school football stadium about five miles from my home. I walked there, but stretched the walk to 8 miles. Walking is good but it does not 'erase' over-eating as every once in while I apparently need to re-learn.

Last night was the first time my daughter wore her snappy cheerleading outfit.

Yesterday,  and during the entire week, my 'sweet tooth' was wildly out-of-control.  The solution to this problem is simple: CUT IT OUT. I really do not completely believe that I gained all this weight in one week, (6.8 pounds - it does not seem possible) part of it might be due from the lateness of the hour of my dinner after the football game. Nevertheless, what the scale says on Saturday morning, is what it says.  I will try to get the scale to be a bit more friendly next week. STILL, BEFORE I FLOG MYSELF FOR THIS BACKWARDS WEEK - I WILL REMIND MYSELF THAT I AM DOWN 89.3 POUNDS FROM THE DAY THAT I STARTED ON DECEMBER 24, 2014 @ 309 POUNDS.

In a battle between two of the highest academically ranked schools within the CPS (Chicago Public Schools) High Schools, our team, the Payton Grizzlies came out on top. As much fun as it was to watch the game last week, when my daughter was cheering, there is something more rewarding about watching the team for which you are rooting to persevere and win.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

My daughter will have her first day as a High School Freshman today on Tuesday morning. My first day as a High School Freshman was the day after Labor Day in 1971, a mere 45 years ago. It is hard to know who is more excited - me or my daughter (OK, apparently it is me.) The last time my daughter had her first day of school was the day she walked into her kindergarten class for the first time nine years ago. Oddly enough, back then I weighed about what I weigh now, as I had lost 80 pounds in the preceding Spring and Summer. At that time, my weight never stabilized and from the moment that kindergarten started I gained and gained and gained weight back after having lost it in the previous year. By the time that my daughter was in 7th Grade, I had ballooned up to 309 lbs. Fast forward nearly ten years, and this time things have been different.  My weight has mostly been stable for nearly two years. In four years time, when my daughter graduates from high school, I would expect to weigh something very close to what I weigh now, or perhaps a bit less. That's the plan. It is useful to have a plan.

First Day of Kindergarten, the day after Labor Day, 2007 (for a brief period in late 2007 I weighed about 225 lbs, by the time that that first year of Kindergarten ended I had probably gained at least 25 pounds on my way to 309 lbs)

CHICAGO HIKING, OUTDOORS, & SOCIAL GROUP

Yesterday morning, I joined a 'Meetup Group.'


I joined the Chicago Hiking, Outdoors, & Social Group.  I saw that there was going to be an informal hike at the SAND RIDGE NATURE CENTER just 30 minutes from my home at 1:30PM in the afternoon.  I scooted over there and joined an informal group of nearly 80 hikers. The group spanned all ages, all levels and all genders. When the hike was over, I had logged four miles. This group has different hikes all around Chicagoland and surrounding states (Indiana, Wisconsin) which are held year-round. I am sure that I will join these folks again some time in the future.

After I returned home from my visit to Sand Ridge, there was some quick downtime, there was dinner and then I was back into my hiking boots to walk to the Lane Tech's Football Stadium for the football  Payton-Lincoln Park game where my daughter would officially be a cheerleader for the first time.  Our team, Payton, lost 42-36 in a game that was not decided until the clock ran out.
