KEEPING THE STREAK

For the second year in a row, my daughter and I were volunteers helping to run a concession stand at a Northwestern Football Game. As part of a fund-raiser for the Payton High School Cheerleading Squad, a commission is earned on all the receipts at the booth during the game. I do not know what volume of business we did, but it was amazing to me, how many people left an extra dollar in the tip jar. There were so many volunteers that very little was asked of me during the game. I was right in there helping to wrap the 250 hot dogs that were prepared before kickoff. During the game, I walked around the stadium, I walked up and down stairs, and I walked up and ramps and I walked in place. By the time I returned home, my step count was more than 20,000 and I had 'climbed' nearly 50 floors. Right after the game, my daughter and I hopped on the subway for the 12 mile trip home. At the precise moment, we boarded the train, the wind kicked up and it started pouring. We were delayed at one station as a bunch of branches fell on the tracks ahead of us. We finally arrived home around 5:00PM. At around 6:30PM, the rain stopped, the clouds dissipated and I went out for an 8 mile urban hike. After such a good weigh-in on Saturday morning, I sure was not going to end my hiking streak yesterday. Another day passed where I have been keeping the streak.


Sure it's goofy, but the headlamp comes in handy at night

GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

My daughter is a freshman at high school and she is a cheerleader. Yesterday afternoon at 5:00PM, the cheerleaders were cheering for the Girls Varsity Basketball Team. I had the opportunity to go to the game in order to watch my daughter in action. The game was compelling as the home team beat the visitors in a come-from-behind victory. The momentum of the game changed for the home team after a short delay due to the fire alarms that interrupted the third period. The entire gym was evacuated into the cold 25°F temperatures outside. The game was exciting and it was fun to watch the girls on both teams compete. When I was in high school I was a substitute player on the Junior Varsity team as an 11th grader. I was not very good. One of my biggest athletic accomplishments at that point in my life was simply making the team. I admired the skill and tenacity of the players on both teams. I think that this will be the only Girls Basketball game that the cheerleaders will be cheering for - I am looking forward to seeing my first high school boys basketball game since about 1975. Of course, I enjoyed watching my daughter cheering as well. I am very proud of my daughter for being involved in cheerleading right from her very first semester at her new school. I know that this will greatly enrich her overall academic experience at school. Go Grizzlies.

Really, what is my problem?  I know I ate too much this week. A little too much in the cookie department,  a bit too much on the chocolate.  I think I may have 'forgotten' to enter everything consumed into my daily food log... But still.... 219.7 lbs?  Is my weight so tentative that the slightest deviation sends it spiraling up?  Answer: Apparently is yes.  So what to do?  Do better this week and every week following.


Friday was the second game that my daughter was cheerleading for the Payton Grizzlies. It was the first time that she was in uniform. Once again the game was played at a 'local' high school football stadium about five miles from my home. I walked there, but stretched the walk to 8 miles. Walking is good but it does not 'erase' over-eating as every once in while I apparently need to re-learn.

Last night was the first time my daughter wore her snappy cheerleading outfit.

Yesterday,  and during the entire week, my 'sweet tooth' was wildly out-of-control.  The solution to this problem is simple: CUT IT OUT. I really do not completely believe that I gained all this weight in one week, (6.8 pounds - it does not seem possible) part of it might be due from the lateness of the hour of my dinner after the football game. Nevertheless, what the scale says on Saturday morning, is what it says.  I will try to get the scale to be a bit more friendly next week. STILL, BEFORE I FLOG MYSELF FOR THIS BACKWARDS WEEK - I WILL REMIND MYSELF THAT I AM DOWN 89.3 POUNDS FROM THE DAY THAT I STARTED ON DECEMBER 24, 2014 @ 309 POUNDS.

In a battle between two of the highest academically ranked schools within the CPS (Chicago Public Schools) High Schools, our team, the Payton Grizzlies came out on top. As much fun as it was to watch the game last week, when my daughter was cheering, there is something more rewarding about watching the team for which you are rooting to persevere and win.
