STAR TREK BOLDLY GOES INTO THE CLASSROOM

I was not the best student in grammar school, although I skated through with a some timely help from my parents as well as on the strength of my innate intelligence. This plan kept me going into high school, although it sputtered  quite a bit once I hit biology, chemistry, physics and calculus.  My college career was not an overwhelming success as I had not developed the proper study habits required.  Obviously, I was taking the wrong courses.  I am sure I could have easily 'aced' a class on Star Trek, like the one currently offered at UC Davis in California. Now that's something I could have easily sank my teeth into.

Star Trek as a Social Theory: To Boldly Go Into the Classroom

UC Davis students learn how fictional universe mirrors our own
For over 50 years, the science fiction franchise “Star Trek” has captivated millions of fans worldwide. And at UC Davis, you don’t have to travel across the universe to take a ride aboard the USS Enterprise. There’s a class for that.
Anthropology professor James Smith, a “Star Trek” fan himself, is the Captain of the ANT 191: Topics in Anthropology starship crew. The course title is “Star Trek as a Social Theory.”
“This course uses ‘Star Trek’ as a vehicle for understanding critical themes in social theory and anthropology, while also teaching students how to think about ‘popular culture,’ television, and daily life anthropologically,” Smith said.
Each week, students watch a single, 42-minute “Star Trek” episode in addition to assigned readings and in-class discussions analyzing social and anthropological theory. The series acts as a cultural map, mirroring the social constructions of one universe and comparing it to our own.
“It reflects the optimism of the Kennedy era in the U.S., and also presents an opportunity for us to question some of the assumptions informing that optimism,” Smith said.
Students examine questions like: Should there be a universal standard for making ethical decisions? Does technology make us “more human” or does it enslave us?
“I want students to think seriously and critically about what these imaginings of future entail so they can learn to understand some of the cultural assumptions that are packed into them,” Smith said.
Currently, the class is watching episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” but Smith says he may explore more of the franchise in the future.
On Dec. 4, the UC Davis Human Rights Lecture Series explored how “Star Trek” can be used as a tool for students to examine human rights-related topics. And now, for the first time at UC Davis, “Star Trek” has become the framework for an academic course.
Human Rights Studies Director Keith David Watenpaugh and Chancellor Gary May co-hosted the event at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. The title of the series was “Star Trek/Human Rights: To Boldly Go to Human Rights for All.”
“Certainly in the 50 years since ‘Star Trek’ appeared, talking about, contesting, fighting, and dying for human rights has been a definitive element to being human,” Watenpaugh said.
The “Star Trek” franchise inspired May to pursue the sciences at a young age. With a background in electrical engineering and computer science, May did just that.
“I’m thrilled to hear about the new ‘Star Trek’ class and I hope to visit it, along with another class called the Science of Superheroes,” May said. “As many people know, I’m a ‘Star Trek’ fan — the original series — and one of the reasons I like it so much is because it deals with broader issues of the human condition: rights, race and ethics.”
As such, May jump-started a 10-year campus-wide initiative entitled, “To Boldly Go.”  The plan seeks to increase UC Davis’ national ranking by strengthening the university’s research expertise and growing a diverse community that represents the demographics of California. A final plan is scheduled to completed this July.
May is also an aficionado of other superhero franchises like the “Avengers,” “X-Men” and “Justice League” because of their pursuits for good.
“I want students to feel empowered to be like superheroes — agents of their own success, their careers and their destinies — to do some good in the world,” May said.
The class will also explore the more specific themes of “Star Trek” such as politics, freedom, translation, empire, capitalism and more.
“The numerous episodes that responded to human right issues in the 1960s still resonate with us today, and also give us a sense of how people in that era were thinking about rights and also the timeless nature of human rights questions,” Watenpaugh said.
The end of the course entails a creative writing assignment in which students imagine that they are a part of a Klingon or Vulcan High Council. As a member of the council, the students must go revisit the year 2018 and write an ethnographic report on some aspect of the community from the lens of either a Klingon or Vulcan standpoint. The assignment gears students to explore the issues inherently constructed in our society.
“In the Star Trek world, this utopian future emerges after apocalyptic events in our current near future, so there is a message about the end of the world not in fact being the actual end, but rather the beginning of something else,” Smith said.

WHAT A GREAT ANNIVERSARY!

Today is Wednesday, November 8, 2017. One year ago, on Wednesday November 7, 2016 there was a political earthquake that struck the United States of America. It's name was Donald Trump. I voted for Trump, I had very low expectations that he was going to win. I even believe that he did not think that he was going to win. I know that his opponent definitely didn't think that he was going to win. But win he did. I think that he is doing a great job, although he is saddled with a completely useless Congress. The Democrats, many of which are such crybabies that they stayed home for Turmp's inauguration are unwilling to support anything proposed by Trump. And the feckless Republicans have not been much better. Those clowns in the Republican Party campaigned for nearly a decade how they were going to repeal and replace Obamacare. The Congress voted countless times to repeal when they were 'protected' by the fact that President Obama would never sign any repeal into law. Now that we have a President who clearly desires to repeal this monstrosity, the Republicans have forgotten their multi-year campaign promise with which they have raised millions and millions of dollars. I have contempt for the Republicans in Congress, but I have great admiration for the guts that President Trump has had. And please don't tell me that he can be a jerk sometimes, I already know that. Turns out he is a very flawed human being, but as President he has shown some real guts. You gotta admit, it must take guts just to go out in public with that rather unique hairstyle that he favors. Trump was elected one year ago. What a great anniversary!

If I am going to continue my daily hikes and/or walks, I am apparently going to have to get used to being out and about in the darkness. With the seasonal time change in affect since early Sunday morning, sunset in Chicago is currently around 4:30PM. I am going to have to consider getting up early in the morning before breakfast to catch some sunlight. That gets harder and harder as the mercury drops. At sunrise today, 6:32AM, Wednesday, November 8 in Chicago, the temperature was  32°F.  32°F is officially freezing. Had there been precipitation this morning, it could have been snow. That is cold.

ROLLING STONES: BLUE & LONESOME

Way back on October 6 of this past year, The Rolling Stones, announced that they would be releasing a 'new' album on December 2 entitled BLUE & LONESEOME. At that time, they released the cover art for their collection of new music shown below.

I am proposing that if they had been a bit more politically incorrect, but certainly politically accurate...They could have used the 2016 United States Presidential Election Results Map by County as their album cover as shown below.

BLUE & LONESOME

To live in loser blue county (Hillary Clinton) among this vast sea of winning red counties (Donald Trump) would easily make one blue & lonesome. I live in Chicago, which is part of Cook County, and politically speaking, I do often feel lonely. In the aftermath of the Presidential Election which was still less than two weeks ago... I am definitely not feeling blue.

here is the original October 6th press release announcing Blue & Lonesome

THE ROLLING STONES ANNOUNCE THEIR RETURN TO THE BLUES WITH NEW ALBUM ‘BLUE & LONESOME’ OUT ON DECEMBER 2
Five decades in the making and just three days to record
On 2nd December 2016The Rolling Stones will release Blue & Lonesome, their first studio album in over a decade. Recorded in just three days in London, England, ‘Blue & Lonesome’ takes the band back to their roots and the passion for blues music which has always been at the heart and soul of The Rolling Stones.
‘Blue & Lonesome’ is available in various formats and will be released on December 2nd by Polydor Records. It was produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins and is available for pre-order worldwide from today, October 6th, at 9am EST in the USA and 2pm in the UK (equivalent times worldwide), go to rollingstones.com/blueandlonesome.
The album was recorded over the course of just three days in December last year at British Grove Studios in West London, just a stone’s throw from Richmond and Eel Pie Island where the Stones started out as a young blues band playing pubs and clubs.
Their approach to the album was that it should be spontaneous and played live in the studio without overdubs. The band – Mick Jagger (vocals & harp), Keith Richards (guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ronnie Wood (guitar) were joined by their long time touring sidemen Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Matt Clifford (keyboards) and, for two of the twelve tracks, by old friend Eric Clapton, who happened to be in the next studio making his own album.
‘Blue & Lonesome’ sees the Rolling Stones tipping their hats to their early days as a blues band when they played the music of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf – artists whose songs are featured on this album.
The tracks are – Just Your Fool, Commit A Crime, Blue and Lonesome, All Of Your Love, I Gotta Go, Everybody Knows About My Good Thing, Ride ‘Em On Down, Hate To See You Go, Hoo Doo Blues, Little Rain, Just Like I Treat You, I Can’t Quit You Baby.

IRREVERANT ELECTION ANALYSIS

irreverent

  1. lacking proper respect or seriousness; also :  satiric

Today is Saturday November 19, 2016. It is a scant 11 days after the election that changed the direction of America and possibly the world. Although it is true that President-Elect Trump won the presidency in an electoral college landslide, his opponent, Hillary Clinton did manage to collect more votes. It is clear that the electorate in America is very close to evenly divided.  Today, I will provide a public service.  I am going to tell you how to spot someone who voted for Trump or someone who voted for Clinton.  If you see someone who appears to be walking on air, with an extra bounce in their step, or simply walking along with an exuberant look about them - it is likely you are looking at voter who supported Donald J. Trump. I offer these two photos of myself as an example.

Trump supporters in the last two weeks have been lighter than air.
Trump supporters may appear to be floating on air as in this photo.
* * * * * * * * * *

Spotting a Hillary Clinton supporter is really quite easy. If you spot someone in a 'SAFE SPACE', with a coloring book, playing with Play-Doh, sitting quietly by a therapy dog or curled up in the fetal position - you are likely in the company of a person who has inexplicably supported a candidate with no accomplishments in a thirty year career, who found it impossible to tell the truth on any issue at any time, and who flouted a long list of laws and seemed to despise the United States Constitution, and certainly despised half of all Americans whom she labeled as deplorable. Often these people will be found in the fetal position as shown below. Hillary Clinton supporters can also be seen protesting and singing songs with snappy lyrics, for example:  We reject the President Elect.

The lefty liberal radicals that supported Hillary Clinton  often have trouble facing reality. If a 'safe room' is unavailable, they are often found in the fetal position cowering at the thought of Donald Trump, the President-Elect who is nominating solid conservatives to fill hundreds and hundreds of jobs in the new administration.

Therapy Dogs are terrific... but really, if you don't like the results of an election,  you need a therapy dog?

I am guessing that the coloring books in university 'safe spaces' don't have any images of the President-Elect.

Apparently playing with Play-Doh can change the results of an election in the make-believe world of the left. Conservatives see nothing inherently wrong with Play-Doh when it is used by it's intended grade school enthusiasts.

I recently heard Dennis Prager say something on the radio which I definitely agree with.  I can only offer a paraphrase of the quote:
The only difference between kindergartners and college students is the age of the kinder.
Safe Spaces? Gimme a break!

The photo below represents a typical demonstration or riot that often erupts when conservatives are upset that their candidate has lost an election. I think many people can remember the riots that broke out all over America when Barack Obama was elected President. If you are having trouble remembering them, it is likely because it never happened. Even when conservatives are upset and disappointed with election results - they are hampered in their ability to demonstrate and riot as they typically have families and often jobs.

Conservatives also seek shelter in SAFE SPACE.
Our definition of SAFE SPACE is that part of space where there are no BORG.  That is Safe Space.

If you are out in the universe and encounter a BORG CUBE - you are NOT in SAFE SPACE!
