PLYMOUTH, INDIANA (DAY 60)

After scooting into Ohio for one day, I was back in Indiana by late Thursday afternoon.
I arrived at my hotel in Plymouth, Indiana just before dark.
Undeterred, I changed by clothes, grabbed my headlamp and flashlight and set out for a hike.
When I returned, I had logged 7 miles.
My caloric consumption, could arguably be said to be in the neighborhood of 1000.
And that was that.
DAY 60
One more day, and I get to weigh myself on Saturday morning...

AIRPORT NEAR MIDNIGHT

My appointment in Danville, Illinois was for 1:00PM.  I left Chicago right around 9:30AM to insure that I would arrive on time. My visit to the Danville location lasted until about 5:30PM. My hotel reservation for the night was still an additional two hours away in Springfield. My plans to watch the New York Yankees play was amended. I did not arrive at my hotel room until about 8:30PM. By this time the Yankee game was already underway and the score was tied 3-3. Apparently the 1st inning took 45 minutes. I had flirted with the idea of watching the game while stepping in place in my hotel room. But the mild night, the bright sky lit up by the near full moon beckoned me outdoors. I decided to head for Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport and hike around its complete perimeter. When I finished my hike, I had logged ten miles and it was near midnight. It felt so good to maintain my recent streak of walking everyday which began anew in September. I don't know how active this airport is, I never saw even one plane land or take-off.

NORTHERLY ISLAND WITH MY DAUGHTER

One of my favorite places to hike around Chicago is Northerly Island. Northerly Island was once the home of a small airport which our previous Mayor bulldozed away in the dark of night nearly 15  years ago. It was turned into a beautiful quiet park with stupendous views of Chicago. My daughter who has accompanied me many times on urban hikes has wanted to keep the hiking to the city streets. Finally, she agreed to join me in Northerly Island.  I would hope that she will hike with me there more often. It is a great place to take pictures and a great place to enjoy some moments of solitude for a city dweller.

from wikipedia.com

Meigs Field was demolished by a mayor Richard M. Daley in 2003. It is now Northerly Island in 2010.

Meigs Field Airport alongside Burnham Harbor in 2002, before its demolition.
Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport (ICAOKCGX) was a single runway airport in Chicago which was in operation from December 1948 until March 2003, on Northerly Island, an artificial peninsula on Lake Michigan. Northerly Island was also the site of the Century of Progress (1933–34) in Chicago. The airport sat adjacent to downtown Chicago, the second largest business district in North America. Meigs Field airport was closed when the then-mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, ordered the runway destroyed, with bulldozers, without the thirty-day notice required by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.

Meigs Field airport was opened on 10 December 1948, and, by 1955, had become the busiest single-strip airport in the United States. The latest air traffic tower was built in 1952 and the terminal was dedicated in 1961. The airfield was named for Merrill C. Meigs, publisher of the Chicago Herald and Examiner and an aviation advocate.

Northerly Island, owned by the Chicago Park District, is the only lakefront structure to be built based on Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago. The island was to be populated by trees and grass for the public enjoyment by all.

THINK PINK

The various subway lines in Chicago are color coded. Before making a trip to Midway Airport to fly to New York my first stop was at the dentist for a checkup and routine cleaning.  My wife dropped me off at 9:30AM for my 10:00AM appointment. Directly from the dentist my plan was to take the subway, which is right across the street from the dentist, and travel to Midway Airport. The one wrinkle in that plan was that the 'pink' line train near my dentist does not go the Midway Airport. I figured out that I was going to have to take the train back to downtown Chicago and transfer to an 'orange' line train to get to the airport.  Due to Hurricane Matthew, still more than 2000 miles away from New York, my original Southwest flight scheduled to depart at 3:00PM was delayed 3 hours. In the early morning, I rebooked my flight to the 1:00PM flight which was also delayed, but only by 2 hours and 20 minutes, which meant that it was scheduled to depart at 3:20PM (a mere 20 minutes later than my original flight.) My dentist visit was completed at 11:30AM.  I had plenty of time to get to the airport, and then I had an idea.  I decided to THINK PINK. I would take the 'pink' line train which does not go to Midway Airport and get off the train and walk to the airport.  That walk turned out to be 4 miles. When I arrived at the airport, my 1:00PM flight, which had been scheduled to depart at 3:20PM, had been pushed back even further to 3:55PM.  This gave me time to walk a bit more.  So after I ostensibly had arrived at Midway Airport, I 'circumnavigated' the airport, and by the time that I actually entered the terminal at 2:30PM, I had walked 8 miles.  I was very pleased to have squeezed in an 8 mile hike on a day that I thought I would surely not get a chance to walk or do any exercising at all. This particular walk was accomplished in my street clothes, wearing my backpack and wheeling along my carry-on luggage.  I did not walk at my normal 'blistering pace' of 13 minutes per mile, but I wasn't cheated out of a day of exercise either, so it felt great.  My flight did finally depart at 4:00PM, and I finally arrived at my Mom's home at around 8:30PM. We had a delicious Chinese dinner at a nearby restaurant, as guests of my Mom's friend, John.

After getting off the pink line subway train, I walked 8 miles before I came to this spot just before finally entering the airline terminal and subjecting myself to a full body search by TSA agents who didn't like how my entire upper body lit up in their body scanner. I guess the heat emanating from my body after walking 8 miles was mistaken by the machine as residue from a bomb-making factory.

I usually weigh myself on Saturday, but this time I weighed myself on Friday before I left for New York.  I am simply going to pretend that this was my weight on Saturday.  I actually have gone on trips and brought my scale with me, but for this trip to New York I only brought 'carry-on' luggage, so there was no room to bring a bathroom scale. My weight this week is 219.4 (still down 90 pounds from where I started on December 24, 2014)

Hurricane Matthew which as of Friday Night was 1221 miles southeast of Tampa, Florida was already causing airline delays in Chicago yesterday?  This does not bode well for my return trip to Chicago on Tuesday.

UBER DRIVER

My Mom and her brother came to Chicago from New York this weekend for a wedding. I promised them both that I would be their personal uber driver during their 48 hour visit. Although I kept my promise, I still managed to get my walking accomplished as well.  On Friday when I picked them up at the airport, I walked 3 miles around O'Hare airport before I met them at the luggage carousel.  Friday afternoon we did some sightseeing, and while my guests rested before a Friday night party on a Chicago Party Boat, I had enough time to sneak in a seven mile walk before I had to don my uber hat again and drive them to the riverfront.  I spent the whole morning and afternoon with my Mom on Saturday. The high point of the day was watching The Thunderbird Jets as part of the Chicago Air and Water Show. We watched from the rooftop or our building.

This photo was taken as these four jets flew directly over us on the 24th floor rooftop.

On Saturday night, I drove my Mom and my Uncle to the wedding which was about five miles from downtown (30 minutes with traffic) and since the parking lot seemed rather secure, I decided to park the car, and do my walking from that location. I dropped my guests off at 6:45PM and I picked them up at 11:45PM.  During that downtime, I managed a 17 mile walk, and I managed a quick healthy dinner at Mariano's.  Have I previously mentioned that I like to walk?  My hike was all over the to no place in particular, the one particularly nice spot I found was a short Canalport Riverwalk.

My favorite photo taken yesterday was me and my Mom in front of a Chicago store.  I can't say that I shop there often, but I do seem strangely attracted to the shop.
Does my Mom seem young or what? Couldn't we pass for brother and sister?
