FIRST TEN MILE HIKE IN NEARLY A MONTH

Yesterday I completed a ten mile urban hike in Chicago. Two things have conspired against me to hike this much distance in recent days. I have been much busier with work, seeing customers and the cold weather has just seemed far less amusing. Yesterday, the temperature was above 40°F and seemed much warmer. Perhaps going forward, more and more of my longer walks will be restricted to the weekends until daylight and warmth return.

IHOP

On Sunday morning, my daughter and I took a stroll to a neighborhood IHOP. There are plenty of places to find a quick and tasty breakfast in Chicago. We purposefully chose a place more than 3 miles from home. Naturally, we walked. I made a healthy choice of a ham and cheese omelette. Once we walked back home, it was time for me to jump in my car and head to Cincinnati so that I could be in front of a customer at 10:00AM Monday morning.

.

The thing of particular significance to me is that our 7.25 round-trip hike to IHOP on Sunday morning was not even our first jaunt of the day...

...My daughter and I have an agreement. I will never refuse an invitation to take a walk in the neighborhood. On Saturday night after midnight, which was technically Sunday Morning, we took a 4 mile stroll. This meant that our IHOP hike was our SECOND HIKE of the day. Well, you have to understand, the weather in Chicago has recently been spectacular, so this is the time of year to take advantage of that...

MINI MARATHON

Yesterday was the Chicago Marathon. I had forgotten about it. Do not misunderstand, I am not a runner, or even a jogger. My interest in marathon running is very close to zero. However, the past two years, I had mirrored my walking path for much of the marathon and stopped when I reached 26.2 miles. I had no interest in doing that yesterday. The weather was glorious with deep blue skies in every direction, and the temperature was near perfect, around 75°F - I took an urban hike that was 'only' 20 miles. It was my mini-marathon.

Check out the blueness of the sky in the photos below, they have not been enhanced with any photographic dazzle dazzle.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE...

IT'S BEEN A WHILE since I have walked as much as I did last week.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE since I have accumulated as many steps as I did.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE since I have lost 3 pounds in one week.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE since I have been so confident.

Last week, I walked....92 miles

...17 miles on Saturday
...12 miles on Friday
...16 miles on Thursday
...16 miles on Wednesday
... 7 miles on Tuesday
...11 miles on Monday
...13 miles on Sunday

Last week, my total steps as recorded by my fitbit 229,176
The last time, I stepped so much was the week that ended November 26, 2016 when I hit 231,085.

I do not aspire to walk this much all the time. There were weeks during the past summer where my urban hiking was zero. Somehow, I had lost my desire to traipse through Chicago neighborhoods seeking some level of fitness. I am glad that I have recaptured the desire in recent weeks. Walking is good exercise, it contributes very little when it comes to weight loss, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Compared to some of my more recent jaunts, my hike on Sunday was a low key affair. It was just 7.5 miles. This particular urban hike was with my 15 year old daughter, and I always enjoy when she joins me.

NORTHERLY ISLAND WITH MY DAUGHTER

One of my favorite places to hike around Chicago is Northerly Island. Northerly Island was once the home of a small airport which our previous Mayor bulldozed away in the dark of night nearly 15  years ago. It was turned into a beautiful quiet park with stupendous views of Chicago. My daughter who has accompanied me many times on urban hikes has wanted to keep the hiking to the city streets. Finally, she agreed to join me in Northerly Island.  I would hope that she will hike with me there more often. It is a great place to take pictures and a great place to enjoy some moments of solitude for a city dweller.

Meigs Field was demolished by a mayor Richard M. Daley in 2003. It is now Northerly Island in 2010.

Meigs Field Airport alongside Burnham Harbor in 2002, before its demolition.
Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport (ICAOKCGX) was a single runway airport in Chicago which was in operation from December 1948 until March 2003, on Northerly Island, an artificial peninsula on Lake Michigan. Northerly Island was also the site of the Century of Progress (1933–34) in Chicago. The airport sat adjacent to downtown Chicago, the second largest business district in North America. Meigs Field airport was closed when the then-mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, ordered the runway destroyed, with bulldozers, without the thirty-day notice required by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.

Meigs Field airport was opened on 10 December 1948, and, by 1955, had become the busiest single-strip airport in the United States. The latest air traffic tower was built in 1952 and the terminal was dedicated in 1961. The airfield was named for Merrill C. Meigs, publisher of the Chicago Herald and Examiner and an aviation advocate.

Northerly Island, owned by the Chicago Park District, is the only lakefront structure to be built based on Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago. The island was to be populated by trees and grass for the public enjoyment by all.
