Day 5
I thought I would review the types of ridiculous foods I allowed myself to be eating again the past year... I am not proud of myself... Apparently it is true that one has to hit bottom before reversing course... looking at this list of 'foods' I have been eating... I think that qualifies as 'the bottom.'
Yikes, that is quite a menu I have listed above....
Today, on Sunday, Day 5 I did a bit better....
The Marc Jacobs Weight Loss Journal exposes the secrets of diet and weight loss. I do not want to keep you in a state of suspense. Here is the secret: Eat Less. Exercise is critical to one's health. Exercise is not the critical component of weight loss. This blog will focus on a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on eating properly. Marvelous mental musings posted daily. I make an effort to be interesting, instructive and inspiring.

ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI
Guys like me do not belong at 'All You Can Eat Buffets' and certainly should not be going to a restaurant that has 'All You Can Eat Sushi' as a menu option. But, hey it was my birthday on Sunday so my family took me to 'Sushi Para' in Chicago where that was precisely what I had for lunch. This photo was only my first serving...
The original plan was for my family to walk to the Sushi Restaurant but a cold persistent rain dampened everyone's enthusiasm for this plan. On a day that I overate, it appeared that my walking streak was going to come to an end. I had accepted the fact a day was going to come and go without an urban hike. My daughter came to my rescue and asked to go on a walk around 8PM. We did manage a late night 6 mile urban hike. So my walking streak which began on September 2, a few weeks ago has been extended another day.
.
If every day were like today...
You'd weigh 217.7 lbs in 5 weeks.

This was how my meal started... Hey, it's all you can eat for a mere $19.95 . Have I mentioned that I love sushi! |

IHOP
On Sunday morning, my daughter and I took a stroll to a neighborhood IHOP. There are plenty of places to find a quick and tasty breakfast in Chicago. We purposefully chose a place more than 3 miles from home. Naturally, we walked. I made a healthy choice of a ham and cheese omelette. Once we walked back home, it was time for me to jump in my car and head to Cincinnati so that I could be in front of a customer at 10:00AM Monday morning.
.
The thing of particular significance to me is that our 7.25 round-trip hike to IHOP on Sunday morning was not even our first jaunt of the day...

WHITE CASTLE BRISKET SLIDER
I was watching some TV with my daughter this past Sunday when a commercial came on for a new product from White Castle: Brisket Slider. It turns out, my daughter loves brisket. I used to love White Castle. I have not been in a White Castle in more than two years. Nevertheless, after school on Wednesday afternoon, my daughter and I walked about 5.5 miles to a 'nearby' White Castle Restaurant to sample this new product. Once we arrived at the restaurant, we ordered one each. We enjoyed our sandwiches and then ordered another one each. And then we had a third one. Then we walked home. This is our review: delicious.

JEWS, CHRISTMAS & CHINESE FOOD
.
It sometimes surprises me that people who know that I am Jewish ask if I celebrate Christmas. It is true that Christmas is an American national holiday. Christmas is also a religious holiday and it is simply not a holiday for Jews to celebrate. Obviously, I am not dumb enough to attempt to speak for all Jews, but Jews can enjoy Christmas without celebrating it. We can enjoy the music (Quite a few classic Christmas songs were written by Jews) We can enjoy the beautiful store decorations, we can enjoy the beautiful private homes lit up at night and we can enjoy cookies and other seasonal treats. It is just that Santa does not visit our homes, we tend not to lay our wrapped presents under our Christmas Tree which we also tend not to have. However, Jews do have some Christmas traditions. It is not uncommon for Jewish families to get together on this day simply because so many people have the day off from work. Growing up in Long Island, my family often zipped into Brooklyn to visit Grandma and Grandpa on Christmas Day simply because it was a convenient day for family to visit. Another tradition, is born out of reality. There are not too many restaurants open on Christmas Day. Like Jews, most Chinese people do not celebrate Christmas either. It is for this reason, that the tradition of going to Chinese restaurant for Jews on Christmas Day has evolved. Yesterday my family walked five miles downtown to Chinatown in Chicago and five miles back home. For the second year in a row ate dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant, Emperor's Choice.
This short paragraph from 'The Atlantic' was interesting.

This short paragraph from 'The Atlantic' was interesting.
If there’s a single identifiable moment when Jewish Christmas—the annual American tradition where Jews overindulge on Chinese food on December 25—transitioned from kitsch into codified custom, it was during Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan’s 2010 confirmation hearing. During an otherwise tense series of exchanges, Senator Lindsey Graham paused to ask Kagan where she had spent the previous Christmas. To great laughter, she replied: “You know, like all Jews, I was probably at a Chinese restaurant.”
I am no fan of Elena Kagan, but I must admit that I found her response endearing.

50¢ FROSTY
Every walk or hike needs a theme or a raison d'être (reason to exist.) Often I am exploring a new trail and/or park. Last night, my daughter asked for a 50¢ Frosty at Wendy's as they are running a limited time promotion. I am always willing to accede to these types of requests. Of course, with me there is always a little wrinkle. I was willing to take my daughter to Wendy's, as long as we walked there, and usually I am not interested in the most direct route either. My wife joined us. The three of us set out in the early evening. By the time we returned, we had each logged 10 miles.
My daughter got her Frosty, but she did walk ten miles to get it. |
