COMPLETE DAY OFF

Yesterday I was busy at a local wholesale fabric tradeshow. After the show, the seven sales reps who sell their fabrics traditionally get together and have pizza afterwards. I had planned to use the elliptical machine after dinner, but I fell asleep in my room before I had the chance to use the equipment. Yesterday was a complete day off from exercise. Unfortunately it was not a day off from over-eating. it was also my first full day without the benefit of a cellphone which was rendered useless during a mishap at Matthiessen State Park on Saturday.  One forgets how important one's cellphone is until one does not have it available.  Aside from making or receiving phone calls, texts and emails. I realized in my hotel that I was not without a reliable alarm clock. Without a camera I could not email my orders to my vendors. And there are quite a few other countless inconveniences that one is simply not used to dealing with. I hope to have this situation rectified by later today, Monday
.
Everyone enjoys their day off in a way that suits them.

DAY OFF WAS EFFECTIVE

On Tuesday my mind was playing tricks with me. I was starting to convince myself that I had developed another hernia. I think I was simply legitimately sore from some mega-walking and mega-elliptical sessions. My step count on Tuesday was 3163. That is pretty close to zero. I bounced back yesterday with some much greater and renewed enthusiasm for a workout. I spent 99 minutes on my elliptical machine. I took a 3 mile walk around the neighborhood and when the day ended on Tuesday, my step count was in a range that I am more accustomed to achieving - 25008 steps.

Much better. My problem these days is that every time I feel some kind of tinge or tinkle anywhere near my abdominal area - I am assuming a new disaster. I have to remind myself to remember what my surgeon told me during my two week followup from surgery. He said something like this:
There are many times in your life when you have experienced a momentary discomfort somewhere in your abdominal region - since at that time you were not recovering from a hernia surgery - you probably didn't give it a second thought. That's where you need to be now.
Easier said than done. But I am trying.

I had only one workout on the elliptical machine on Wednesday - kinda like a normal person

BART'S EARNED A DAY OFF...

...and so did I.
I know that I had been overdoing it with the walking and the elliptical machine lately. I was feeling what I sincerely hope were psychosomatic phantom pains. I know that my ankles were feeling like they needed a rest. I earned a day off.

ENERGIZED

Two days ago, I took a much needed day off from working out - after failing to locate a nearby YMCA.  I had to admit that I was not too heartbroken that the YMCA that I visited no longer existed. I made the decision that I would skip a day of exercising. I could not remember the last time I missed a day of working out. I know that I should NOT work out EVERY day - but my addictive/obsessive need to exercise each day is strong. Yesterday which was the day after the day off was a different story. Yesterday I was energized.

This time I visited a YMCA that still does exist. I arrived around 5:15PM.  My original goal was to spend two hours on the elliptical machine. After my two hour workout, I still had some energy - so after a short break, I hopped on the machine again for another hour. And after that third hour - I still had some energy to release and worked out for a fourth hour.  It was close to 10:00PM when I left, and I was the last person in the place as the facility closes at 10:00PM. I found an uninspiring dinner of two pre-wrapped sandwiches at a gas station on the way home.  I ate my dinner and at midnight, I still had some energy within myself to unravel.  I spent two hours until 2:00AM walking in place.  I did not stop that particular activity until I had recorded my 10,000th step.  So, today, Thursday when I awoke, I already have 10,000 steps 'in the bank.'

There are two conclusions to explain that abundance of activity. It might be true that that day off was a much needed respite for my body and that it explains my energy burst on the following day. Another conclusion might be made that I am nuts. I guess a third conclusion could be made that both of those statements are true. Yes, that's it.

Yesterday, in my blog I was talking about the lack of wisdom in exercising every day without a break.  In fact, I had recently snapped a streak where I had walked 10 miles minimum for 25 days in a row.  This is precisely what I wrote yesterday:
My mild injury, really only a tightness in my right leg seems to have gotten much better after two days of rest.  As much as I take great pride in exercising almost every day - I also know intellectually that that is not the smartest thing to do. My addictive personality sometimes gets in the way of a more balanced program.  Perhaps, going forward I should start a new streak - this streak should be the number of consecutive weeks where I am sure to rest at least one day.  As of now, I did not exercise at all on Saturday or Sunday.  I am not sure yet, what today, Monday has in store for me...
I have some loyal readers of this blog, my wife, my Mom, my brothers.... But without a doubt, my friend Jack is the most loyal reader.  I seriously do not think he has missed a day.  He is also a fairly common commenter.  His comment yesterday was the most perspicacious comment, ever.

Consecutive weeks with at least one day of rest. Didn't you do 10 years of that!
.
Of course, my friend, Jack is exactly right.  I did have about 10 years of weeks with at least one day of rest.  In fact, I had 10 years of weeks with 7 days of rest!   So, I suppose that I should be shooting for is consecutive weeks with 5 or 6 days of exercise.  That is plenty of exercise.  And it should be appropriate for rest.  That is the goal.  We will see where this leads.  Right now, I am feeling a bit under the weather... so it might be a day or two before I strap on my backpack and take a walk.
