SUPERMAN

My trip to Kentucky came to a close around 4PM on Thursday afternoon when I left Paducah, crossed the bridge and was back in my home state of Illinois.  Right over the border in a town called Metropolis is Fort Massac State Park. I parked my car at the park and before I hiked the grounds of the park, I headed straight for 'downtown' Metropolis to visit the famous SUPERMAN STATUE.

Metropolis is the official Home of Superman and proudly honors its favorite son with a 15-foot bronze statue of America’s Super Hero right in the middle of Superman Square.  A statue of actress Noel Neil, posed as Lois Lane, stands just two blocks down the street from Superman Square. This mural painted on the side of the building depicts various actors who have played Superman.

This statue of  Noel Neil as Lois Lane was a bit taller than me. Noel Neil played Lois Lane in the 1950's Adventures of Superman TV show.  There is no doubt that the Adventures of Superman was my favorite TV show when I was a young lad. Depicted below is Superman (George Reeves) with Noel Neil (Lois Lane) from that classic American TV show.

When I was done hiking through METROPOLIS and Fort Massac State Park - I had logged 13 miles.

From the Superman Statue, I hiked north until I found LOIS LANE.

I do not usually seek out Denny's as a place to eat. On my trip back from Metropolis to Chicago, I stopped at Denny's around 11:30PM in order to have about 4 cups of coffee and a salad before I continued home to Chicago. I might chose Denny's again - the salad that I ordered was rather good.

It was a bit warm when I started my hike in Metropolis.  Although the temperature was only 95°F - the heat index made it feel like 106°F.  That is hot.

SUPERMAN REFERENCES
On January 21, 1972, DC Comics declared Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman." On June 9, 1972, the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572 that confirmed this, declaring Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman".
The local newspaper is named The Metropolis Planet, inspired by The Daily Planet, the fictional paper in the Superman comics and every other Superman media.
The real town of Metropolis is portrayed in one Superman comic-book story, "Superman #92", in a story titled "Massacre in Metropolis!" (which is continued into "Adventures of Superman #515"), as a town whose citizens idolize what is to them the real-life Man of Steel. A villain named Massacre arrives in the town, having gotten lost and thinking he was in the "other" Metropolis, the large city where Superman actually lives. He attacks a security guard and threatens many citizens in order to get proper directions to Superman's Metropolis.

from wikipedia...
The Fort Massac site became the first Illinois state park in 1908. In the 1970s, a partial reconstruction of the 1794 U.S. Army fort was built. In 2002, that structure was torn down, and a reduced-scale, but more detailed, version of the 1802 American fort was reconstructed.
Each fall, reenactors gather for the Fort Massac Encampment, which interprets life in the 18th century. A visitor center just north of the reconstruction includes a museum with Indian artifacts, mannequins in period clothing, and other exhibits that explain the history of the fort.
