MAYBE NATURE SHOULDN'T BE WORSHIPPED AFTER ALL by Dennis Prager

Maybe Nature Shouldn't be Worshipped After All
by Dennis Prager
Tue, Apr 7, 2020.

.
A statement widely attributed to the great British thinker G. K. Chesterton describes the modern period as perfectly as any single idea can: “When people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing; they believe in anything.”
One of these substitute gods has been nature.
Indeed, of all the false gods, nature is probably the most natural for people to worship. Every religion prior to the Bible had nature-gods — the sun, the moon, the sea, gods of fertility, gods of rain and so on.
That is why the farther Western society gets from biblical, i.e., Judeo-Christian, religions, the more nature is worshipped.
Everyone on the left and right cares about the environment. But caring about the environment is not the same as environmentalism. Environmentalism, for most of its adherents, is a secular religion. These people, many of whom refer to, and truly regard, the Earth as a goddess (Gaia, the name of the ancient Greek Earth goddess) worship the environment.
The man who, more than any other, started the modern environmentalist religion was James Lovelock, who developed the “Gaia hypothesis” in the 1970s. Almost 50 years later, in 2014, Lovelock told The Guardian, “Environmentalism has become a religion.”
New York Times columnist Ross Douthat described the 2009 James Cameron blockbuster film, “Avatar,” as “Cameron’s long apologia for pantheism, a faith that equates God with Nature, and calls humanity into religious communion with the natural world.” That equation of God with nature was a major reason for the film’s popularity.
Douthat, one of the only religious (as in believing in and practicing a religion) columnists at The New York Times, added, “The threat of global warming, meanwhile, has lent the cult of Nature qualities that every successful religion needs: a crusading spirit, a rigorous set of ‘thou shalt nots,’ and a piping-hot apocalypse.”
When you ask atheists, as I have for decades, what they believe in, the most common answer is “science.” There was a young man, an atheist, at the gym where I work out, who responded, “Science!” (in place of “God bless you”) whenever someone sneezed. There is nothing higher than science for an atheist because the natural world is all there is. So, worship of the Earth, the environment or nature is almost inevitable in a secular world.
The Bible takes an entirely different view. As explained at length in my Bible commentary, “The Rational Bible,” the first verse of the Bible — “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth” — contains the most radical idea in history. It stated, for the first time in history, that God created nature and is not part of nature. It is one of the reasons I believe the first five books, the Torah, are God-given. No human beings 3,000 years ago in the late Bronze Age would have come up with an idea so opposed to the way the human mind naturally works — to regard gods as part of nature.
From the point of view of the secular, Gaia-worshipping world, Genesis gets even worse when, 27 verses later, God tells human beings to, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.”
Both instructions infuriate Earth-worshippers. Regarding being fruitful, they oppose people having more than one child, and many advocate having no children so as to have minimal human impact on Mother Earth. But the second part — ruling over nature — is what really angers them.
Maybe the coronavirus will awaken young people, who have been taught by nature-worshipping teachers and raised by nature-worshipping parents, to the idiocy of worshipping nature rather than subduing it. Nature, it turns out, is not our friend, let alone a god. If it were up to nature, we’d all be dead: Animals would eat us; weather would freeze us to death; disease would wipe out the rest of us. If we don’t subdue nature, nature will subdue us. It’s that simple.
Nature is beautiful and awe-inspiring. It’s also brutal and merciless. “Nature, red in tooth and claw,” as Alfred Tennyson aptly describes it. Nature follows no moral rules and shows no compassion. The basic law of all biological life is “survival of the fittest,” while the basic law of Judaism and Christianity is the opposite: the survival of the weakest with the help of the fittest. Nature wants the weakest eaten by the strongest. Hospitals are as anti-natural an entity as exists.
Only human beings make hospitals. We do so not by worshipping nature but by subduing it.
If the COVID-19 virus destroys the foolish veneration of nature and leads more people, especially the young, to a new respect for the Judeo-Christian worldview, it might be the one silver lining in this catastrophe.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN STUPID - Bill O’Reilly

from realclearpolitics.com

You Have the Right to Remain Stupid

The vicious contagion presents perhaps the most significant personal opportunity for change in our lifetimes. That’s because the bustle has broken down. The pursuit of money, sex, power, and other magnets are all on hold. We are now apart from the daily machine that can grind us into unthinking, callous people. At least most of us are.

So, how about some introspection? Some inward evaluation. An honest appraisal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Maybe we start with the country and then we’ll get to what’s really important- our own selves - as the country singers might say.
An essential question for me is: how did this country get so hateful? If you are following the contagion news, you know the blame game has kicked in. It’s the “Trump virus”, according to a New York Times columnist. Another far left writer in that liberal journal (it no longer meets the standards of a newspaper) says the virus is enabled by ultra-religious Christians who “deny science.” Of course, she ties that into the climate change debate as well as President Trump.
On the right, some loons accuse China of weaponizing the contagion without a shred of evidence to back up the claim.
With so much craziness available on the net, often disseminated by corporate media, the divisive atmosphere has fueled a unique kind of American loathing. Many of us actively despise those with whom we disagree.
Thus, in our newfound downtime, we might think about whether we are a part of the loathing movement and if we are, whether that is enhancing our individual lives.
And then there is “what your country can do for you.” President Kennedy rejected that sentiment but today the concept is warmly embraced by millions of Americans who firmly believe in the Bernie Sanders doctrine: that the government should provide. No need for self-reliance, that’s for fools. A vast central power structure will dictate what Americans can and cannot have. We the people are not the deciders. Bernie and his comrades would be.
It is simply incredible to me, a son of the Cold War, that socialism is on the rise in America. Perhaps during the contagion we can think hard about our individual freedoms which are under assault from the virus. Do you like being told how to live and where you can go? How about you, Democratic Party, are you embracing the restrictions we are seeing? They are obviously necessary. But they are also a vivid message. This is what can happen all the time when big government totalitarian rule.

On the social front, are you a due process denier? Do you condemn neighbors based on gossip? Are you supportive of the trend that all allegations are convictions? When Brett Kavanaugh was almost destroyed, it was an accusation, not hard facts, that brought him to the brink. One brave woman, Senator Susan Collins, saved him. Hundreds of our elected officials embraced the noose.

Finally, what about you? Do you fear the virus? Why? Are you afraid to die? Do you fear giving the contagion to people you love? Are strangers part of the equation? Do you feel for the suffering and dying? Do you pray for them? Do you pray at all?
All throughout history the world has suffered as it is suffering now. Those who see the big picture understand that dreadful plagues, wars, natural disasters, and human atrocities are all part of earthly existence.
People who accept that and learn from the viral calamity, are likely to prosper in the aftermath.
People who see themselves as victims and who lament the loss of individual pursuits, will stay in place. And, in America, we still have that right - to remain selfish and even more harshly - to remain stupid.

DEAR GOD

Dear God,
Thank you very much for Global Warming. Dare I say it. "Thank God for Global Warming."
I cannot imagine how much colder our winters would be without the benefit of Global Warming.
I know that you are controlling the global warming by the carbon emissions from our modern lifestyles and particularly our fossil fueled cars. This is completely obvious to everyone, except actual clear-thinking scientists and other modestly intelligent people with an IQ above room temperature.
I do have a question for you: When you melted the one mile thick glaciers that covered North America about 10,000 years ago, how did you ever manage that? I am asking because back then the Fake Media, led by The New York Times, was not around to blame SUV's, hairspray, meat-eaters and Republicans for destroying the environment.
Currently in my hometown of Chicago, we have not been above freezing for more than a week, and the forecast for the next week going forward calls for more frigid weather.
Just yesterday, there was something called a bombogenesis (bomb cyclone) that threatened to wipe out the entire east coast of the United States of America. Back when I was a kid, in the old days, we used to refer to similar weather events a 'snowstorm.' (How could we have been so naive?) Obviously the master plan for global warming has created something new as a result our meddling with the climate.
Regarding the global warming, can you please turn it up a notch?
Thank you for considering my request.
All the best,
Marc

MARC DAMNIT!

from the urban dictionary....

god damnit
The phrase "God Damnit", which when expressed in a grammatically correct fashion would read "God Damn It," is a vulgarity used to express frustration. It's literal definition is "May the Christian God Damn it to Hell". In slang, it is a phrase used in a generally non-religious context. For example, if one cannot get an electronic device to work properly, one might exclaim "God Damnit!", meaning that you are so upset with the device you wish that God would condemn it to eternal damnation.
It is rarely used literally, and is considered a lesser of vulgarities, though to the extremely religious it is considered highly offensive. In the Christian faith it is considered a violation of one of the ten commandments.
"I can't get this VCR to work! God Damnit!"

There is no god responsible for the backwards march of my weight. There is one person responsible. Me. Marc. My title of today's blog post, Marc Damnit is meant to show that I am upset with me.  and me only.  There is a solution to this. Stop being a jerk. I did not forget how to manage my weight. I simply stopped. I made hundreds of wrong decisions. I lost weight making hundreds of good decisions. So today, I declare that I am going to REVERSE the direction of my weight. (again)
.
This morning, the scale said: 263.3 lbs.  I was sad when my weight crested over 240 lbs. I was sadder when it crested over 250 lbs. I was devastated when my weight crested over 260 lbs. The thing about losing weight is this: When I make my first initial success getting under 260 lbs. I will oddly be happy. No check that... not happy.... happier... no check that... less devastated... ah heck... Let me just be happy. First I have to get (back) there.  Once I get back under 260 lbs, then I will worry how I should feel about it.

I will begin again today by carefully watching what I eat and logging everything just like I used to when I was so successful in the past.

HAPPY PASSOVER

Last night was the first night of Passover. Our family of three, enjoyed a Seder, as Jews around the world have been having for 3000+ years. During the Seder we tell the story about how the Israelites were given their freedom by God (with an assist from Moses) from their 200 years of slavery under the rule of the Egyptian Pharaohs.  During the retelling of this story, it is hard not to be in awe of God who revealed himself to the Jewish people and gave them the Torah. One definition of the Torah is that it is life's instruction book which guides one to lead a moral and meaningful life. It is where The Ten Commandments were revealed for the first time.  These rules have served as the foundation of a moral lifestyle for the Western world.

There is one part of this story that has always troubled me. It is this: While it is impossible not to be thankful to God for releasing the Jews from the bondage in Egypt - we learn too, that sometimes God works at a pace that we may not completely understand. 200 years is a long time. I sometimes do wonder if America must descend into a further darkness, before the guiding hand of God sets our country on a better path. I do not know the answer, I can only ask the questions. That being said, I would like to wish a meaningful Pesach (Passover) to all my fellow Jews around the world. And since today is also a Saturday, let me add: Shabbat Shalom.

My wife Jennifer, prepared the traditional Passover Seder Plate on a plate that was owned by my Grandparents.

TO ERR IS HUMAN, TO FORGIVE DIVINE

I have mastered the 'erring' part.
I have yet to take command of the 'divinity' part of this equation.

.All people commit sins and make mistakes. God forgives them, and people are acting in a godlike (divine) way when they forgive. This saying is from “An Essay on Criticism,” by Alexander Pope.

.
Here I am sidelined, on the 'dl' (disabled list) for awhile.  My current thinking is that I might have a hernia.  If I am correct this will require surgery. It was wishful thinking on my part to imagine that it was only a groin pull that was the source of my discomfort. Tomorrow, Monday, I will call my doctor to make an appointment.  My error yesterday was eating too much. Very Human. I will chose to forgive myself, not so much from any 'divine' reason - mostly it would simply be so unhelpful not to forgive myself. Therefore, I chose to forgive myself for consuming more than 3000 calories yesterday.

GOOD LUCK, JACK

Last night, I met my young friend Jack at my Chabad House for a final evening of L'Chaims prior to him packing his car and moving back to Brooklyn, New York after 3 years in Chicago.

Jack is a special friend, as we had many shared experiences at the Chabad House.  For some reason, a lot of those experiences seemed to revolve around 'L'Chaims.'  It is true that my renewed enthusiasm for Judaism seemed to be in direct proportion to my discovery that Orthodox Jews like to 'weaken' their bodies with alcohol just a bit, to more easily allow greater inspirational spiritual thoughts enter the mind. Anyway, that's the theory.

from the Chabad.org website:
This "weakening of the body" allows the soul to shine through. After taking a l'chaim one is more easily inspired, because the body offers less resistance. This obviously applies only when one drinks in moderation, and on special, holy occasions in an attempt to make them a bit more festive and to introduce an inspirational ambiance
I am going to miss my friend Jack.  Jack and his bride are about to start the best journey that anyone can ever start. The journey of parenthood. Their doctor has given them a date in February, so I will be keeping an eye out for confirmation of this wonderful blessing to come.  Among the things that I liked about Jack is that we had plenty of things in common despite the fact that I was old enough to be his father's older brother. I don't know if he considered me his unusual 'old' friend or just a friend. It matters not. He is a good guy. Jack I wish you the best.

My friend Jack and I had one last memorable evening at the Chabad House last night. I expected to have plenty of L'Chaims. I actually do try to count them as I intend to log them into my food diary.  (Although, when I do, I usually get a disapproving email from my Mom, who is among my most regular blog readers)  Nevertheless, I think we didn't quite get into double digits last night - but I do know that our bodies were weakened plenty to discuss some big issues.  All kidding aside, the discussions last night included discussing quantum physics and God.  This is precisely what the 'L'Chaims' are purported to do - open pathways to new inspirational ideas.

I will simply look forward to my next L'Chaim with my friend...whether it is in one year or ten years.

I was well aware that last evening was going to be an evening of eating and drinking... although it is more or less useless to try to pre-burn calories prior to overindulging... It is something that one can't be blamed for trying.... Yesterday, my first workout on the elliptical machine was from 5:00AM until 6:30AM and my second workout was from 3:00PM until 4:30PM which was prior to my 7 hour visit to the Chabad House.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Yesterday I made a trip to REI in order to purchase front and rear bike lights.  I have riding my bike a few times after dark and it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to make sure that I am visible at night. As a new member of REI with an REI credit card I had earned a $100 gift coupon which I used to purchase my headlight and tail light.  I spoke with a knowledgeable employee who helped guide my purchases.   I settled on a CYGOLITE 400 LUMENS USB RECHARGEABLE HEADLIGHT ($59.95) and a PLANET BIKE 1 WATT LED TAIL LIGHT ($30)   The total cost of these two lights was $89.95 (plus 9.25% Chicago sales tax)    Back when I was a kid, all the way back when I graduated grade school in 1969 I longed for a Schwinn Varsity 10-Speed bicycle.  I used the internet to 'discover' the price of this bike that I dreamed of as a kid and it was less than I paid yesterday for two lights!  ($81.95) My parents were kind enough to buy a bicycle for me, but they did not spring for the top of the line, best-selling Schwinn - I vaguely recall that my bike came from Kmart or some similar discount store.  The bike that I did own probably cost something in the neighborhood of $59 back then.

CYGOLITE METRO USB RECHARGEABLE 400 LUMENS BICYCLE HEADLIGHT
PLANET BIKE SUPERFLASH TURBO TAIL LIGHT

All this proves one thing.  I am old. From 1969 when I graduated grade school at the age of 12 to the current day when I am less than 3 months away from my 58th birthday - I have lived through 46 years of inflation.  I was looking at the prices of all the new fangled bicycles offered at a local bike shop and I was amazed.  Bikes these days can easily be $1000, $2000 or more dollars.   The current bicycle that I am using was purchased at a garage sale three years ago and I recall paying approximately $100 for it.  My bike, a DIAMONDBACK was probably 'only' $400 dollars when new.  Although the chrome is rusted in quite a few places - I have been enjoying using it since I 'rescued' it from its three year hibernation in the bike locker of my building last last month.

THE TITLE OF MY BLOG ENTRY TODAY IS 'LET THERE BE LIGHT'
THIS COMES FROM THE BIBLE.... GENESIS
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.  God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
First there was evening and then there was morning - the first day.   AND NOW DEAR FRIENDS, YOU KNOW WHY JEWISH HOLIDAYS BEGIN AT SUNDOWN....first there was evening and then there was morning.
