SIMON SAYS

I always find it extra interesting to read writers who have 'transitioned.' These days, the transition from male to female or female to male is much celebrated. A significantly much more common transition is the change from liberal to conservative. Apparently Roger L. Simon is one such person. I found his essay to be very clearly stated. It was difficult to find much to disagree with.

Colbert, Trump, and the Roots of Liberal/Progressive Rage

I have never seen America so angry -- and I've been around for a while.
I remember well 1968 when the Chicago Seven (I knew several of them) led the protests at the Chicago convention.  The whole world was watching. And the following year came the Days of Rage in the same city, when dozens of people were injured and 280 members of the Weather Underground were arrested.  The year after that (1970) some of those same Weather people accidentally detonated a bomb in a Greenwich Village townhouse, resulting in the deaths of two of the bomb makers and causing disruption in the life of Dustin Hoffman and his wife who happened to live next door.
Violent times indeed. Of course something was going on that stimulated those events -- the Vietnam War, for which roughly 650,000 young Americans were drafted of whom nearly 18,000 died.  Adding in the volunteers, the number of our fatalities rose to 58,220.

I opposed the war then.  I'm not so sure now, looking at how things have evolved, including in Korea. Call me ambivalent.
Nevertheless, these days no one's being drafted.  The number of American servicemen deaths, regrettable as they always are, has been reduced to a relative handful. Nothing even remotely similar is happening...
Oh, yes, Donald Trump got elected -- seemingly a calamity equal to, if not greater than, the Vietnam War.
Since his inauguration, and to a great extent before, the whole country has gone more or less berserk. Just the other night, comedian Stephen Colbert, in what I presume we were supposed to take as an edgy witticism, accused our president of fellating Russia's Vladimir Putin. Although I recall many bad things being said about LBJ back in the day (Barbara Garson wrote a play comparing him to Macbeth, and who can forget "Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?"), nothing approached Colbert's angry joke in terms of pure unmitigated hostile vulgarity, not on late-night TV anyway.

But his was just the culmination (for now) of a modern Days of Rage which has metastasized into Months of Rage with no end in sight.

We all know the endless litany of events, from pussy hat parades to smashed windows and fires at our most famous public university to people marching through the streets of Philadelphia calling for the death of the president and his vice president, so I'm not going to bore you with them all.  I am only going to ask the simple question: Why Trump?
If you were a visitor from a distant solar system come to our nation or even a time traveler from our own nineteenth century, I submit you would be perplexed. This Trump person (being?) doesn't seem to be all that different from many leaders who have come before him. I mean, what has he done exactly? Enforced some immigration laws that were enacted by the Congress over several administrations? Tried to fix a mediocre healthcare plan with another plan that may or may not be as mediocre? Called for a tax reduction similar to those enacted by previous Republican and Democratic administrations? Cut back on some regulations that became overly burdensome? Called for a temporary halt to immigration from a half-dozen countries his predecessor had already cited as dangerous hotbeds of terrorism? Shot off a few dozen cruise missiles at the airfield of a dictator who was gassing his own people, but didn't harm a single person in the process.

I could go on, but you get the point. Compared to the grand panoply of political theory and governmental actions in world history this is pretty puny stuff. In fact, it's even less than that. It's a piffle. And almost all of this, if it had been called for by his opponent, would have been perfectly acceptable anyway.
And yet the rage is, if anything, greater and more consistent than it was during Vietnam.  How do we explain that?
I don't think we have a choice but to say the explanation is in the realm of human neurosis, not politics. And make that pretty severe neurosis, almost psychosis.  Something about Trump's character and appearance -- what he says and does or, more accurately, what they think he says and does, because they are completely incapable of seeing it with any clarity -- has set off multiple trip levers in the minds of a huge percentage of Americans, including the media, Hollywood, the academy, etc.  This, however, says vastly more about them than it does about Trump.
One way to look at it is that the left, or what we call the left (liberal and progressives of various stripes), are actually by far the most conservative or rigid people in our culture in terms of personality.  The slightest alteration in policy or change in the zeitgeist threatens them all out of proportion to reality and they act out, like these self-described anarchists (assuming they have even heard of Bakunin or Kropotkin) just did the other day in Portland, naming themselves, as did the increasingly pathetic and desperate Hillary Clinton herself just did today, "The Resistance."  In what sane universe does calling yourself "The Resistance" to Donald Trump make sense when the original "RĂ©sistance" was to counter Hitler and the Nazis taking over France, and prevent them from sending people to concentration camps and doing away with the underground in firing squads?  Is that what Trump is doing?

To put it bluntly -- that's just crazy. And not crazy like a fox.  Crazy like bat-you-know-what crazy.  And yet it is all around us.  It's as if someone should put Prozac in the water.
But coming back to what causes that trip lever -- it may come down to what Marxists call "false consciousness," though in this case it's the reverse of what Marx intended. These people are using the pretense of socialism to cover up their love of the most rapacious capitalism.  They hate Trump because he exposes them.  His unabashed and unashamed capitalism and obvious riches are what they seek, but don't want to admit to themselves or others.  Otherwise they would have to face what they are and stop pretending to "goodness." It's about the virtue signaling or what I have elsewhere called moral narcissism (really the psychological motivation for virtue signaling). But it has become considerably more extreme since I wrote the book and has reached the level of pathology. It's also extraordinarily infantile.  If Marx has been upended, so has Arthur C. Clarke.  No more Childhood's End.  In 2017 America, it's Adulthood's End.

Don't believe me?  Here's just one name as an example -- Madonna (not the original one, the one that "thinks about" burning  down the White House).

After Monday night we can add another:  Stephen Colbert.

Roger L. Simon is an award-winning novelist, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and co-founder of PJ Media.  His latest book is I Know Best:  How Moral Narcissism Is Destroying Our Republic, If  It Hasn't Already. Like so many other people he wastes time on Twitter @rogerlsimon.

.
until I stumbled upon this essay, I had never heard of Roger L. Simon.  So I looked him on wikipedia.

Political views

Simon remained conventionally liberal until the 1990s when he began asking questions in response to events such as the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Simon, a former civil rights activist in the 1960s, said he was shocked by "the kind of essential dishonesty to justice" of Simpson's acquittal. Simon said, "I found the use of racial politics in the O.J. trial so repellent to me, morally, but also, I couldn't believe it was happening right there in front of my eyes. It started to shake up some things. And then came 9/11."

Simon experienced a political transformation in which he felt alienated from what he saw as the excesses of the Left after the realities of the September 11 attacks affected him. He jokes, "I may be the first American writer who was profiled both by Mother Jones and National Review." He supports same-sex marriage and the War on Terror, and contends that those issues are linked. He also edits a weblog. In 2005 he founded, with jazz guitarist Charles Johnson, webmaster of the Little Green Footballs weblog, a startup company called Pajamas Media. Pajamas Media, now known as PJ Media, expanded in 2008 into Internet television with Pajamas TV, now known as PJTV. Simon, with screenwriter Lionel Chetwynd, hosts PJTV's "Poliwood" show, covering the intersection of politics and Hollywood.
Simon's first non-fiction book, Blacklisting Myself: Memoir of a Hollywood Apostate in the Age of Terror, was published by Encounter Books in February 2009. It was republished in 2011 with additional material under the title Turning Right at Hollywood and Vine: The Perils of Coming Out Conservative in Tinseltown

Simon's most recent book -I Know Best: How Moral Narcissism Is Destroying Our Republic, If It hasn't Already - was published by Encounter Books in June 2016..

WHITE CASTLE BRISKET SLIDER

I was watching some TV with my daughter this past Sunday when a commercial came on for a new product from White Castle: Brisket Slider. It turns out, my daughter loves brisket. I used to love White Castle. I have not been in a White Castle in more than two years. Nevertheless, after school on Wednesday afternoon, my daughter and I walked about 5.5 miles to a 'nearby' White Castle Restaurant to sample this new product. Once we arrived at the restaurant, we ordered one each. We enjoyed our sandwiches and then ordered another one each. And then we had a third one.  Then we walked home. This is our review: delicious.

EVEN STEPHEN HAWKING CAN BE WRONG

I can think of nothing that is going to make people question my humilty than if I question Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking has one of the greatest minds on anyone living on earth in the last few generations when it comes to astrophysics, quantum mechanics and the evolution of the universe. This has been his specialty. Recently he has warned that if humankind is to survive global warming, we might have to colonize new planets. Even if we take the scientific 'chicken littles' seriously who are warning about the temperature of the earth rising 1°C over the next 100 years. Is it reasonable that we are going to find another planet in a nearby solar system that is as perfect as Earth is even after 100 years of global warming? The lesson here is that a genius in astrophysics is not necessarily a genius in climate change or socio-economic policy. I suspect that readers of the New York Times and graduates of elite universities will have trouble understanding this. That is why I am trying to provide guidance. Geniuses in astrophysics are not necessarily the same people that I would unquestionably seek guidance from in other areas that are outside their expertise.

Think about it. For example, would you take geo-political advice from someone who had excelled in real-estate development?  Oops, bad example. However, regarding our president, we must remember that in the election that was held in November, Trump bested someone who had never excelled in any field. Oops. Again this is not true. I seem to remember that Hillary Clinton cleverly invested $1,000 in cattle future contracts and made $100,000 in profits.  That's not too shabby. Still, being an expert in bribery and dishonest kickbacks is only an accomplishment in that she has (so far) avoided prison.

Back to my original thesis for the day regarding the warning from Stephen Hawking...  It is true that the increased heat from our sun is definitely going to make our planet uninhabitable...in about billion years. Therefore it is true that eventually we may have to leave our neighborhood in the Milky Way - but we really do have plenty of time. We can use that time to work on our warp engines and transporters.

from the telegraph.co.uk

Tomorrow’s World returns to BBC with startling warning from Stephen Hawking – we must leave Earth

Humans will need to colonise another planet within one hundred years to ensure our survival, according to Professor Stephen Hawking. The astrophysicist has made a new documentary, Expedition New Earth, as part of the BBC’s new science season Tomorrow’s World. In it he will claim that time is running out for Earth and if humanity is to survive climate change, asteroid strikes, epidemics and overpopulation we will need to leave our planet and venture further afield.

We will leave our solar system when we are ready... We have plenty of time to develop our means of transportation. We are going to need a proper ship, and a transporter room might come in handy as well.

NO HUMAN BEING IS ILLEGAL

Are democrat leaders in Congress stupid, or do they just think that we are stupid?  The DNC Chairman on May 1st was quoted as saying that 'no human being is illegal.'  OK, what does this mean? Is it NOT ILLEGAL for someone to overstay their visa? Is it not illegal for someone to trespass on someone else's property? Is it not illegal to break a law, even if you disagree with the law? For example, is it not illegal, to fail to stop at a stop sign? I have proof that this is the case. Nearly two years ago, I received a ticket for precisely that. My failure to properly stop at the stop sign DID NOT MAKE ME ILLEGAL, but the failure to come to a complete stop was illegal. Is this concept really so challenging for Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez to understand? I am guessing it is not. But I do think that he thinks that the people hearing him speak are too stupid to understand. You know what? He may be right after all.

So in conclusion, I will happily state for the record that I agree that 'no human being is illegal'.
I would like to add other deeply intellectual thoughts: no human being is a beach ball, no human being is a flower, no human being is a deity (with respect to about half my fellow Americans, I mean except Barack Obama)

I would also like to state that human beings are capable of doing illegal things. For example, traveling to a country and establishing residency without permission.  You don't believe me?  Try doing that in Mexico. (or any other country and be sure to let me know how that worked out.)

DNC Chairman Claims ‘No Human Being Is Illegal'
TED GOODMAN

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez spoke at an immigrant and workers rally outside of the White House Monday.
“The Democratic party will always be here, fighting for you,” Perez told the group Monday afternoon. “The Democratic party is here, fighting for you.”
Perez asserted that the Democratic party and the immigrant community share the same values, centered around diversity. He claimed that “our nation’s diversity is our greatest strength.” He also expressed frustration with the current president, who he would not mention by name.
“Our most important power is not the mister in the White House, I can’t even mention his name, the power is with all of you,” Perez said, before extolling the power of big labor, which was present at the march in solidarity. “No human being is illegal, we must treat everyone with dignity,” Perez continued, as he switched between English and Spanish for the crowd.
The protest outside of the White House, which grew to a few thousand by the dinner hour, was a part of nationwide May Day protests. The day is recognized around the globe as the international version of Labor Day.
“We will be fighting for racial justice, economic justice, and moral justice,” Perez said, listing off a plethora of talking points.
Perez said he spent over ten years with Casa Maryland, one of the groups organizing the May Day protest. Perez was approached by The Daily Caller News Foundation with questions but declined to comment.

$400,000

President Obama was paid $400,000 for a 90 minute speech last week. A conservative like me might wonder, what he could possibly say that was so worthy of receiving this much money. We live in a system, capitalism, where someone's pay is based on finding someone willing to pay it. Lefty liberals have a different response.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) last week said she was "troubled" by the speaking fee the former president is reportedly receiving for that appearance. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also expressed disappointment in the former president's decision.

Here is my question to both Senator Warren and Senator Sanders. So what? If an organization wants to pay Obama this much money for a speech - how does this adversely affect anyone else?  No seriously, I want to know why this is a problem?  For example, am I to believe that current 'American Indian' Senator and a future ex-President, Elizabeth Warren would turn down such a fee? Sure, and I believe that fairy dust can make one fly.

Could these two have beat Trump last November?  I believe they could have.  A scary thought indeed.
