THE FORCE AWAKENS

A long time ago, in a place far, far away (Long Island) in the summer of 1977, I was still a teenager. (at least until November of that year) and like every teenager in America - I went to the movie theatre to see Star Wars.  Again and again.  And few years later when the first sequel was released, in 1980, I returned to the theatre to see The Empire Strikes Back.  And a few years after that, in 1983, I returned to the theatre, yet again, to see The Return of the Jedi.  Back then, if one wanted to see a movie again, one had to return to the theatre, VHS tapes were in their infancy and DVD's had not been invented yet! When 1999 rolled around, and The Phantom Menace was released - I returned to the movie theatre to see that film as well.  That movie 'cured' me of the desire to see anymore Star Wars films.  I remember, The Phantom Menace was mostly boring and I hardly remember the story and I don't remember it being a very good film.  I have never seen 2002's Attack of the Clones or 2005's Revenge of the Sith.   Whatever magic George Lucas had in the production of those first three films, had apparently been drained by the time that the trio of sequel prequels were released.

As the release date for this latest installment in the Star Wars saga approached, The Force Awakens, I was seemingly unmoved by the hype.  But the hype is strong in this one.  With J.J. Abrams at the helm (who made that first Star Trek reboot which was simply amazing) and initial reviews touting the film - my resistance was futile.  (I know...wrong movie)  I have succumbed to the hype.  My wife completely rejected the idea of seeing the movie with me.  And although, my daughter's enthusiasm was almost as tepid - I did buy two tickets for a late afternoon showing of the film this coming Saturday.  We will be seeing the film is 2D (as I prefer) and we will be seeing the film within a half mile of our home.  All of a sudden, I became really interested in seeing this film.  Once I realized that most of America was going to see it - I decided to jump on board as well.  The Force Awakened.  At least until July 22, 2016 - That is when the new Star Trek film will be released.
