WHY THE REMEDY MAY BE WORSE THAN THE DISEASE - DENNIS PRAGER

As a general rule, I agree with Dennis Prager on 99% of everything he says.  When I disagree, I naturally assume that I am wrong.
(Yeah, I kinda love this guy - he keeps me sane.)

Why the Remedy May Be Worse Than the Disease

As of this writing, 6,400 people all over the world have died from the coronavirus. In the United States, 68 people have died.
Some perspective:
Chinese deaths (3,217) account for half of the worldwide total. If you add Italy (1,441) and Iran (724), two countries where many Chinese were allowed in until recently, that totals another 2,165. In other words, outside of China, Italy and Iran — with 5,382 deaths collectively — 1,018 people have died. There are 7.8 billion people in the world.
Regarding Italy, the Jerusalem Post of March 16 reported that according to Nobel Prize-winning chemist Michael Levitt, “Italy’s higher death rate was likely due to the fact that elderly people make up a greater percentage of the population than they do in other countries such as China or France.” As former CBS correspondent Sharyl Attkisson further explained: “Italy has the oldest population in Europe and more elderly per capita than the U.S. Most of the Italian deaths are in patients in their 80s and 90s. In addition, Italy has a great number of direct China contacts. Italy was the first to join China’s ‘silk road’ economic partnership project … (Italy’s) deaths are out of a population of 60 million people.”
Regarding Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported on March 11:
“Iranian officials trace the origins of the country’s coronavirus epidemic to the holy city of Qom, home to … a number of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects built by scores of workers and technicians from China … ‘(China has) turned into a very toxic bomb,’ said Sanam Vakil, deputy Middle East director at Chatham House, a think tank in London.”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump announced a ban on flights from China on Jan. 31 — for which he was denounced by leading Democrats and throughout the left. The very next day, presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden declared, “This is no time for Donald Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia — hysterical xenophobia — and fearmongering.” On Feb. 2, the American Civil Liberties Union announced, “These measures are extraordinary incursions on liberty and fly in the face of considerable evidence that travel bans and quarantines can do more harm than good.”
The current consensus favors near-total social isolation, or “social distancing,” as it is now called. The thinking is that we must shut down the Western world to prevent the exponential growth of the virus. If we don’t, our hospital systems will be overwhelmed. Many thousands, maybe more, would die, as doctors have to make grisly triage decisions as to who gets care and who doesn’t. This latter scenario is reported to have already happened in Italy.
Though there is no longer an exponential growth in the United States, they may otherwise be right.
Is this thinking correct? The truth is we don’t know.
We have no idea how many people carry the COVID-19 coronavirus. Therefore, the rates of either critical illness or death are completely unknown. Perhaps millions of people have the virus and nothing serious develops, in which case we would have rates of death similar to (or even below) the flu virus. On the other hand, perhaps not many people carry the virus, but the rates of illness demanding intensive care and of death are much greater than those of the flu.
We can only be certain that shutting down virtually every part of society will result in a large number of people economically ruined, life savings depleted, decades of work building a restaurant or some other small business destroyed. As if that were not bad enough, the ancillary effects would include increased depression and divorce and other personal tragedies. The effects of closing schools for weeks or months will include family chaos, vast numbers of bored young people, health care providers who will have to stay home and more. Yet young people are the least likely people to become ill from the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released this statement regarding closing schools:
“Available modeling data indicate … that other mitigation efforts (e.g., handwashing, home isolation) have more impact on both spread of disease and health care measures. In other countries, those places who (sic) closed school (e.g., Hong Kong) have not had more success in reducing spread than those that did not (e.g., Singapore).”
But the longer-term ripple effects are potentially far worse. Economic disasters rarely remain only economic disasters. To give a particularly dramatic example, the Nazis came to power because of economics more than any other single reason, including Germany’s defeat in World War I, the Versailles Treaty or anti-Semitism. Nazi success at the polls was almost entirely related to the Weimar economy. Communist parties don’t fare well in robust economies, but they’re very tempting when people are in dire economic straits. Only God knows what economic dislocation the shutting down of American and other Western economies will lead to. I am not predicting a Nazi or communist ascendancy, but economic and political disaster may be as likely, or even more likely, than a health disaster.
But here is a prediction: If the government can order society to cease functioning, from restaurants and other businesses to schools, due to a possible health disaster, it is highly likely that a Democratic president and Congress will similarly declare emergency and assert authoritarian rule in order to prevent what they consider the even greater “existential threat” to human life posed by global warming.
The dam has been broken. Maybe it was necessary. But when dams break, flooding follows.

THANKSGIVING 17 MILE URBAN HIKE (DAY 115)

On my drive back from Indianapolis into Chicago I noticed a new billboard advertising the Rolling Stones tour stop at Soldier Field this summer. This gave me a destination for my Thanksgiving walk. I wanted to take a picture of myself with the billboard in the background.  All I had to do was walk approximately 8 miles to get to this spot.... My entire hike was 17 miles.

BLUE WAVE IS COMING (DAY 100)

It was long suspected that there would be a BLUE WAVE on election night in America on Tuesday November 6th.  It turns out, a BLUE WAVE is on the way... Lost in all the election hullabaloo over the past few days, a Rolling Stones North American Tour has been not-so-much announced, but officially teased....

Bad Eating.
No exercise.
Not a good day.
And the Democrats take over the House.
An extremely bad day.
What a stupid way to mark Day 100 since I checked in at 283.6 lbs.
Oh well....tomorrow is another day....

TEN WEEKS (DAY 70)

It is hard for me to believe that just 70 days ago, precisely ten weeks ago, I was still ballooning up in weight. As I have been immersed a bit in reviewing pre-calculus with a certain young student, I guess that that was my 'maxima'. I did a quick look at the scale on Sunday morning, and I saw 235 lbs. Down nearly 50 pounds from that day just 10 weeks (70 days) ago.
(283.6 lbs - 235 lbs = 48.6 lbs that disappeared into 'thin' air)

not bad, lost nearly 50 lbs in ten weeks
.

I keep a windbreaker hood in my backpack all the time to protect my head (and headphones) from rain. It only took me about two years to figure out that this was a worthwhile item of clothing to always keep in my backpack.

STUPIDITY RAINS

Lately I have been drowning in stupidity. A parade in cancelled in Portland, Oregon due to the threat of violence against the apparently unwelcome scheduled participation of some Republicans.  I blame the stupidity of the parade sponsors and the city who are folding to these anonymous threats. An appearance by the brilliant and wickedly funny Ann Coulter is cancelled at the University of California - Berkeley due to the threat of violence. I blame the cancellation on the stupidity of the college administrators who are too cowardly and too weak to protect an invited speaker and the students who would like to attend the speech. Berkeley is the birthplace of the free speech movement in the 1960's?  Maybe it was. Apparently it is the birthplace and the deathbed. Liberal lefty lunatics are attacking Trump's new tax cuts as it will mostly benefit 'the rich' including Donald Trump. Yes, it is true, tax cuts will benefit Donald Trump. You know why? Because he is part of an increasingly smaller and smaller subgroup of Americans who actually pay federal income taxes. Sure, if you pay no taxes, I understand why a tax cut may not be interesting. I blame the media who focus on how a tax cut would personally affect Trump. Why should anyone care about this? The media are counting on the stupidity of the American people to find this a problem worthy of debate. After nearly two  generations have been brainwashed in schools from Kindergarten through College and have been molded into perfect snowflakes - they buy into this stupidity without question.

When the Democrats in Congress spearheaded the partial government takeover of our healthcare system, aka, Obamacare, aka Affordable Care Act - did they do this simply to benefit themselves, in the same way that Trump's tax cuts will benefit him?  Uh, no....in fact, they exempted themselves! Our representatives in Congress wanted no part of this particular abomination. Stupidity may rule in Washington - but Congress was not that stupid to subject themselves to Obamacare. Ok, so that was a bad example.

We are in a civil war. We are only 100 days into this administration and liberals are absolutely going nuts, except how they are going nuts with the threat of violence thrown into the mix. Our country is in trouble. Stupidity Rains.  check that...Stupidity Reigns.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. Albert Einstein

On the way to Bowling Green, Kentucky, I made a 30 minute detour just to go to the Visitors Center at Mammoth Caves National Park which was just 20 miles away from my destination. I know now that I definitely want to return to this place and actually see the caves. My 'hike' was a grand total of .39 miles, I expect to hike a bit more the next time I visit.

FALSE ALARM

Yesterday when I weighed myself, I was somewhat disgusted when the scale stopped at 230.3 lbs.  I honestly did not think that this was correct.  I knew I had had a 'bulky' dinner late on Friday night and thought that this was skewing my result.  Saturday morning, before I did anything, I weighed myself again, and this time the 'needle' rested at 228 lbs.  Much better.  Saturday's weight was a false alarm. Well...it was still an alarm... but things were not quite as bad as they seemed.  Yay.

HOW MUCH DOES A SEG WEIGH?

How much does a seg weigh?  I don't know... what I do know is that last evening, my daughter and I learned, mastered and zipped around on a segway for over an hour in Peoria, Illinois.  It was great fun.

from the segway.com website....

December 3, 2001
The Company adopted and trademarked the name Segway®, from the word segue, which means "to transition smoothly from one state to another".
December 2001
The Segway Personal Transporter (PT), the world's first electric, two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation device was unveiled on Good Morning America.
November 18, 2002
Segway PTs went on sale to the public for the first time on Amazon.com.

After zipping around for about an hour in Peoria on the Segway last evening.  I discovered when I dismounted from the machine that my legs felt a bit funny.  It was the similar to the feeling that one feels when one comes ashore after being on a boat for awhile.  On the Segway (top speed 12 miles per hour) one is basically standing in one spot for the whole time.  It is very definitely an interesting way to travel.

STARVED ROCK

STARVED ROCK STATE PARK is approximately 90 miles from Chicago.  The park is known for its many canyons within its 2600 acres.  The park is located near the small village of Utica in LaSalle County, Illinois, along the south bank of the Illinois River.   The park attracts over two million visitors each year which is tops among the the state parks in Illinois.  This park is a hikers paradise offering over 12 miles of trails.  Yesterday, our family walked 5 miles on the trails (and steps) visiting some of the scenic overlooks which towered 125 feet above the river and we also ventured deeper into the woods to see some of the famous canyons.   We spent the most time at LaSalle Canyon which  is one of two canyons that has at least a trickle of water that flows year round.   It is not too difficult for me to wonder why it never occurred to me to visit this park before - in fact, I am sure that I know the reason.  Men who are 309 pounds don't look for recreational opportunities that involve strenuous hiking.  In fact, men who are 309 pounds don't look for recreational opportunities that involve moving too much at all.   One more reason that I am happy to no longer be a man who weighs 309 pounds.

We left Chicago, promptly at 6:00AM for the nearly two hour drive. Our visit to the park yesterday started at 8:00AM.  We ate breakfast at the Starved Rock Lodge which was built by the CCC in the 1930's. (Civilian Conservation Corps)   At 9:30AM we started our pre-arranged tour which was a 'land and sea' package of sorts.   We took a trolley which first went to the Visitor's Center where we saw a 15 minute film about Starved Rock and its history. We re-boarded the trolley and continued on a tour of Utica (all two blocks of it) and then we visited the visitors center of a lock and dam on the Illinois River before boarding The Belle of the Rock, an authentic Coast Guard licensed paddlewheel tour boat.   After an extremely relaxing 'boat trip' on the Illinois River we returned to the lodge for lunch.   After lunch we set out for the trails.

My wife generally does not disobey 'Don't Walk' traffic signals even if there is no car within sight. Ironically, my wife had no problem leading our expedition of three across a portion of the trail that was closed as the bridge was 'out.'  As you can see, we survived.   My daughter posed for a picture just to insure that I didn't forget this small detail!

HOW DID STARVED ROCK GET ITS NAME?
This synopsis of the explanation for how Starved Rock got its name comes directly from starvedrockstatepark.org
The park derives its name from a Native American legend. In the 1760s, Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe, was attending a tribal council meeting. At this council of the Illinois and the Pottawatomie, Kinebo, the head chief of the Illinois tribe stabbed Chief Pontiac. Vengeance arose in Pontiac’s followers. A great battle started. The Illinois, fearing death, took refuge on the great rock. After many days, the remaining Illinois died of starvation giving this historic park its name – Starved Rock.

HOW WAS STARVED ROCK FORMED?

This article is reproduced from mywebtimes.com

Geology is responsible for Starved Rock
by Derek Barichello, derekb@mywebtimes.com  (May 25, 2011)

Geology is pressure over time.  Starved Rock State Park took millions of years for its sandstone to form and thousands to be carved into the waterfalls and box canyons today.  While the legends of the park add lore to the scenery, the canyons, bluffs, overhangs and waterfalls are what continue to bring people to the state park, according to Pam Grivetti, president of the Starved Rock Foundation. There are 18 canyons in the six-mile park. "It's a beautiful park," she said. "Illinois is filled with prairie and farms and all of a sudden right here, you have Starved Rock."The sandstone at Starved Rock was formed during the Ordovician time period in geology when the land was actually south of the equator. The local uplift was brought about by the formation of the La Salle Anticlinorium. Due to the erosion of Devonian and Silurian ages, the time period for the formation of the La Salle Anticlinorium is estimated during the Mississippian period, according to a Northern Illinois University study. The area was then covered in a glacier during the Wisconian glaciation during the Ice Ages. This left most of Illinois flat but thanks to a flood called the Kankakee Torrent, Starved Rock land remained more similar to how it looked before the Ice Ages. This flood caused the Illinois River to swell and caused the park to collect bedrock and glacier deposits. Erosion continues at a much slower pace comparative to what the major floodwaters did. "Field observations indicate that ice and flooding may be the two most powerful erosive forces at work on the canyons," said Davina Wolfe, who has studied Starved Rock at the Department of Geology at Ball State University. "These observations suggest that seepage erosion may be the dominant erosional force in the late winter."You can see the effects water has had on the sandstone by looking at the rocks below you," Wolfe said. "The sandstone displays an uneven surface because some areas are cemented stronger than others."
