GO NUCLEAR

Does the United States Senate overstate their importance? A proposed rule change which will allow the Supreme Court nominee to be appointed without the customary 60 votes is said to be the nuclear option.  Here's why this is great for conservatives. Sometimes the Senate will be in the hands of the liberal Democrats and sometimes, as now the Senate will be in the hands of the Republicans. Republicans always play nice and although they tend to disagree with the politics of the liberal hacks that they must approve - they don't fight the President and they (mostly) vote to approve. Right now the Democrats are making noises that they will not play nice with President Trump's nominee and vote for Gorsuch. Great. Fantastic. No Problem. In the future, the Republicans can nominate the most conservative person they can find, and the Democrats won't be able to stop them. On the other hand, the Democrats will never be able to nominate someone more left than someone like Justice Sotomayor - because such a person doesn't exist. If they supported Raul Castro for the Supreme Court (putting aside for the moment that he is a Cuban citizen), how would his rulings differ from the four Democrat hacks that already vote left on every issue? I'll give you as much time as you need to ponder this...   Go Nuclear.

I spent just one day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and before I left to scoot back into Ohio, I visited Frick Park and finally took an actually hike in actual woods and while on my hike I saw an actual deer. I don't run into deer too often during my 'urban hikes' in Chicago. It was good to be back on a true wooded path. My fitbit recorded that as part of my hike I climbed the equivalent of 124 floors. There was a lot of ups and downs during my eight mile trek.

SOMETIMES YOU ARE THE NUT

The 'showdown' in the Senate is upcoming by week's end... The Republicans want an 'up and down' vote on Judge Gorsich and the Democrats want to prevent this vote with a filibuster.

This is what Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said on the Senate floor, November 2013 when Republicans were stalling the votes on some Democrat appointments with their own fillibusters.

“We need to call out these filibusters for what they are: naked attempts to nullify the results of the last presidential election. To force us to govern as though President Obama hadn’t won the 2012 election. Well, President Obama did win the 2012 election by five million votes, and he has done what the Constitution requires him to do.”.

BASICALLY, I AGREE WITH HER.... Her statement just needs a tweak to two....

We need to call out these filibusters for what they are: naked attempts to nullify the results of the last presidential election. To force us to govern as though President TRUMP hadn't won the 2016 election. Well, President TRUMP did win the 2016 election by 74 electoral college votes, and he has done what the Constitution requires him to do.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is obviously a true patriot. She honors the Senate by her mere presence and has an unwavering reverence for the United States Constitution. She understands that the winner of the Presidential Election has the right to have their nominees voted on and not blocked by filibusters of the minority who have lost an election. I agree with her completely. The only problem is that she does not agree with herself anymore. She apparently no longer thinks that filibusters are naked attempt to nullify the results of elections. That's called a '180'. Well....you know what they say, "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't."  Sometimes you are the nut.

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES

Senator Charles Schumer has been widely quoted as saying something along the lines that if a supreme court justice nominee cannot get the 60 votes needed for confirmation, the nominee should be changed, not the rules.

Apparently Democrats DID NOT feel this way when the last president was nominating lower court judges who could not get 60 votes in the Senate. At that time, it was NOT deemed prudent to change the nominee, but to change the rules.

Changing the rules for a Supreme Court nominee to a simple majority is the 'so-called' nuclear option.

Our last president very famously said that "Elections have consequences." Can't argue with that.  So my question for Senator Charles Schumer and the rest of the Democrat Senators: When did election stop having consequences?  (follow-up question - Do elections only have consequences if the Democrats win?)

I sincerely need some bonafide spring weather. Since, I have little patience for walking outside in blustery damp conditions, I spent some time on the treadmill yesterday.... My speed was only 3.7mph and I did not incline at all, but at least I was at it for 99 minutes and I traveled 6.13 imaginary miles.

CIRCUS MAY BE FOLDING, BUT NOT THE CIRCUS COURT

A few weeks ago, the Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus announced that it was folding its tents. Sadly the United States 9th Circus Court of Appeals will be continuing indefinitely. Yesterday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, known as the Circus Court of Appeals upheld the stay of  President' Trump's temporary travel ban, a completely lawful, Constitutional restriction.  I figure if Liberal Democrat Harvard  Law Professor Allen Dershowitz thinks that this was a bad decision, not based on Constitutional Law, that is enough proof for me. Oh yeah, the circus is back in town.

FIFTEEN MILES

For the past few days I hadn't walked, hiked or spent any time on an elliptical machine. The elliptical machine in my building remains out-of-order until it is replaced later this month. I was caught up in some Netflix binge watching and when I wasn't caught up in Netflix, I was caught up in the news out of Washington. For three days, I had slipped into lethargic mode. Yesterday, circumstances had me taking three different five mile urban hikes in Chicago. When the day ended, I think I was a bit tired, at least my legs were.

WOW!

Wow! I have learned to expect politicians to make great promises and fail to even remotely keep them. During the recent presidential campaign, I remember saying to people that if Trump only does half the things that he has promised, I would be happy. Yesterday he kept a solemn promise that he made. He promised to select a Supreme Court Justice in the mold of Antonin Scalia. He did precisely that. I am a true believer now. Donald Trump evidently ran for President in order to do the things that he said he would do. This is amazing. This is great. I wonder what all those so-called conservative, republican 'Never-Trumpers' are saying now. What more could we conservatives ask of our new president? The lefty libs are going crazy. The crazier they get, the more secure am I that this was a sterling choice. The New York Times wasted no time editorializing that this was a poor choice. Way to go New York Times, you are so predictable. When I heard Gorsuch speak last evening during the announcement, I was wildly  impressed. Wow!

Judge Neil Gorsuch with Justice Antonin Scalia on the Colorado River.
