MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER

There was a time last year, when I was losing almost one pound per day by limiting myself to 1000  calories per day, that I thought that I might have a new career. It seemed at the time, that I could help anyone and everyone lose weight. I thought I could be a motivational speaker. I thought I would give lectures and inspire people. There was a small 'window of opportunity' when my desire and will-power where in complete sync. Weight loss seemed easy. I remember so well, thinking that if I could get down to a particular weight, it would be really easy to maintain as I would be able to eat so much more. The eating so much more part, I have mastered. I need to retrain myself to eat a little bit less. I have been very hard on myself lately. I probably should not be quite so negative. Even yesterday, when my scale pointed to 221 lbs, it's not as if I have completely lost control. I am still down 88 lbs from where I started. So, today, I am going to try to concentrate on the positive. And right now, I am going to go to the YMCA for your basic 2 hour workout on an elliptical machine. As I have learned, exercise does not really contribute that much to weight loss, but it does make me feel better after I have done it.  That is reason enough to continue. I simply do not enjoy admitting that there is a part of me that sympathizes with Matt Foley.


Matt Foley is a fictional character from the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live performed by Chris Farley. Foley is a motivational speaker who exhibits characteristics that someone in that position would not typically have: whereas motivational speakers are typically successful and charismatic, Foley is abrasive, clumsy, and down on his luck. The character was popular in its original run and went on to become one of Farley's best-known characters.

FRESH START

Each day that I blog, I am mostly talking to myself.  I often trying to convince myself of something. During a nearly 10 year period that I ballooned from 220lbs all the way up to 309lbs my blog, had one existed, would have been the same every single day.  I am disgusted with myself, and I am going to start to change my life tomorrow.  Those sentiments that I had every day for nearly 10 years ended on December 24, 2014.  On that day, a decision was made to make big changes in the way I conducted myself on a daily basis.  There has been much progress and plenty of setbacks. One area which has been without setback is my new habit of exercising each day. I am proud of the fact that I have made this lifestyle change. It does take a lot of effort, sometimes it takes a bit of planning - but I have missed very few days of exercise during the past 13 months. In fact, I am certain, that my exercise might even be more effective if I gave myself more days off. However, since this is the part of my lifestyle change which seems to have been the most sticky - I am unwilling to mess with it. 

Overeating is still something that I fight.  Although my 'career' at all the fast food joints that I visited so frequently has absolutely ended - I have discovered that one can still eat too much. And just because I have shied away from the chips and Hostess Cakes that I used to eat non-stop during the day - one can still eat too much granola and other so-called 'whole foods.'  I simply need to do a better job of keeping my calories down.  It almost feels like I need a fresh start.

SLAYING BAD HABITS IS NEVER EASY

My eating, my portion control, my self-control simply got out of control this past week.  The thing to do is to draw a line in the sand.  Oops, I did that last week.  OK, I guess I have to draw another line in the sand. I am going to weigh myself tomorrow. I know I will not like what I see.  And that is it. Long before I become my own personal Titanic and long before I slam into a devastating iceberg, I am going to change course and avoid sinking.

TOO MUCH

This was the week that I was going to draw a line in the sand.  I have not. I have let my appetite get the best of me. I have been eating too much. I really need to regain the control that I had temporarily mastered last year. It's not that I have returned to previous poor habits - for example, my 'career' eating at McDonalds, Burger King, etc has effectively ended.  It is just that I am letting my appetite get the best of me.  Last evening, I did have a full delicious and healthy salad from a grocery store salad bar, but I also had a full dinner too, with a sweet treats afterwards... I am eating good foods, but I do need to eat less.
